just watched it and.... I don't know about this movie. It looks funny, but not as good or as dark as the original. Gene Wilder is going to be hard to top as Wonka

Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and a classic story - we have to expect good things. I agree that nothing will be able to compare to the orginal but this looks like it telling the story in a different way. I for one am very likely to go and see this one at the cinema.

I'm really looking forward to it, but I'm cautious about it as well. Something as well-known and loved as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory has to be redone just as well or people're gonna be up in arms.

I'm glad they are using the book's title, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". Never liked the title change for the original movie.

Didn't Willy Wonka give the factory to the little kid and his grandfather at the end of the first one? Woulda been nice to see a sequel of the kid all grown up and how he's running it rather than a re-make. It still looks at least decent..specially for kiddo's. Depp looks freakish though

Thanks for posting the link! I've been looking forward to this for awhile now. I have to agree though...Johnny almost looked like a woman. He's a great actor though, I'm interested in seeing how it turns out.

I can not wait to see this. From what I've heard, it's more an adaptation of the book than an actual remake of the movie. We'll see, though I cant imagine it wont be wonderful.

Yeah! I heard that he was the original pick somewhere. Man, between the two of 'em, as creepy as Depp is looking in this, he wins hands down. I don't know that I could take Manson screwing with the story.

Yeah but if it were Manson then parents would probably keep their kids from going to see the movie. Because we all know Johny Depp as the lovable Pirate Cap'n.

Did anyone notice how VERY straight Wonka's teeth were in that trailer? Maybe they throw in some side-story that although he owns a chocolate factory, he's addicted to sweets, which resulted in his perfectly crafted teeth.

I was terribly interested in this movie before seeing the trailer..
It looks like more poop fro hollywood to me. I'll still watch it just to see what Burton did with a classic story; but I hope they picked the stupidest parts of the movie for the trailers to appeal to a large audience.

1. Johnny Depp - There's very FEW movies that Depp has the starring role that aren't good, but those are pretty much early 90's. Anything after that is either pretty decent (Secret Window) or damn good (Blow, Fear & Loathing, etc)

2. Tim Burton - Someone above said "not as dark as the original", hahaha riiiight. Burton will take the original and make it DARKER. Remember.. Nightmare before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, and the first two Batman films. All pretty dark/twisted in some way.

This movie should be good. I hated the original. Too cheesy.. all that singing

Remember people, this is not supposed to be a remake of the movie, it's just another adaptation of the book -- hence the change in title.

Trailer looks kind of cheesy, but it looks like they wanted it to be that way. Johnny Depp won't do us wrong, I think the movie will be good. Hopefully there is some extra humor for the more mature movie goers kind of like we see in Shrek movies. A little something for everyone would be nice.

I said that it looked not as dark, and is does not. do you remember the boat ride from the original? that is dark. The who origial movie had a weird kind of weight to it. This remake, it should have never been done. Looks too happy and for little kids. the Casting of Manson would have been better. I like depp, but he looks too nice, very similar to edward scissorhands, from the trailer he does not seem twisted enough. and not everytihing that burton has done was dark and/or good, especially his other remake, the crappy planet of the apes. It was not dark, and pretty much was not very good as well. Actually if we review his last 5 movies you will see his supposed darkness has lighted up some (big fish, Mars attacks, ed wood, and sleepy hollow, along with the apes) I really like big fish and ed wood, but the others were sub par, and most of that bunch not being "dark"

The first move was Dark? Im sorry, perhaps my childhood memories differ from yours, but I thought the first one was cheesy and kiddy, not dark in the slightest. However, with this one You've got Burton, THE MAN for making movies dark, and Johnny Depp, and amazing actor all around. How can you lose?

Personally, I can't wait to see it. IMHO, Depp is a great actor. Have you seen him in "From Hell?" Great movie. I think he's be a great Wonka.

Between Depp and Burton, this is going to be a movie to remember. But not at bedtime. This movie is going to be like viewing an alternate universe. Almost here, but enough different that it's gonna give you the creeps.

I was checking out the IMDB page, to see if Stompy's question was answered there (it wasn't), and on the trivia page I read:
Quote:
Screenwriter John August had never even seen Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) when asked by Tim Burton to write the script. After finishing the screenplay, he finally watched the 1971 version, only to be surprised at how much darker the "family film" was to his own.
That doesn't inspire me to see this remake. The trailer didn't do much for me either. I don't know why people bother to remake movies that were done correctly the first time around.

Stompy, I heard that Manson would be taking on the role of Slugworth about 6 months ago. I've been following up on the progress of this film since I first heard it was being made. It might be a rumor, it might be true, either way, it's gonna be good.

I will admit, I have never read the book, so my attachment to the story is strictly from the standpoint of the old movie. And while it is hard to make any decisions based on a teaser trailer with only 1 spoken line in it, I already get a bad feeling about this flic. The look and demeanor of Depp's Wonka just doesn't feel right. Wilder made the original a classic, because he looked and talked (for the most part) like an average joe, but it always fealt like there was a mad genius lurking just beneath the surface, at least until the end when he revealed his true motives to Charlie. I hope for the best for this movie, but as one of the few people I know that absolutely hated Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, Ed Wood, and Batman 2, I am highly skeptical.

I really hope this is a good movie. For anyone who thinks this may not be a dark movie, well, consider that it involves a group of children getting nearly killed. How can it not be dark?

For those who may not know, Roald Dahl wrote a sequel called Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. I remember enjoying it greatly when I was 9, maybe I'll dig it out and see how time has treated it.

I hope this movie adds something more to the first film's greatness.

I need to check these books out.
I've not read a lot of these classics, but I surely want to.

While we're talking about one of Roald Dahl's literary works, I just saw on the tv while watching the opening credits for the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice, that Dahl wrote the screenplay for the film.
You could've blown me over with a feather.
