Zombies Eating Brains - Origin?

I was thinking about this earlier... a lot of people associate zombies with eating brains.

The most well known zombie trilogy (Night/Dawn/Day of the Dead) had zombies eating flesh in general, so which movie started the official "zombies eat brains" stereotype?

The ONLY movie I've seen (and can think of at the moment) that had zombies eating brains was Return of the Living Dead - the comedy/horror flick from 1985.

Was there another?

"They're coming to get you Barbara." I think Night of the Living Dead is at the root of this phenomena.

Good question, I believe the first time I actually heard anything about eating brains was in "return of the living dead". It is possible though it got started in the old school zombie movies (before Romeros "night").

I'm almost positive the Return of the Living Dead is what started the whole eating brains thing

Yeah, that's what I'm pretty much leaning towards... I totally can't think of another that had 'em strictly eating just brains.

It's weird though, that movie wasn't a huge success or anything, so it's surprising that it was the source of the mainstream "zombies eat brains" thought.

Well, maybe not so surprising - after all, we all know what "bling bling" is, yet that originated from some not-entirely-too-famous rap group (at least, not compared to someone like Snoop or Dre).

Resident evil 1 (PS1) also used "brrrraiiiiinnnnssss", and lots of people played that

Stompy, great avatar though, although I didn't care much for Return of the Living Dead 1, I must say that zombie kicked serious ass. (I haven't seen it for a long time, but I'm assuming that is the zombie they had locked up in the basement).

My favirote "return" flick is part 3, I'm not into zombie comedy though, I prefer them serious....my favirote zombie flick of all time is Day of the Dead.

I can't wait till land of the dead, it is supposed to arrive in Ocober, the plot is hardcore, you should check it out....

www.homepageofthedead.com is a good site for info.

I wasn't too crazy about Return of the Living Dead Part I. Part II was my favorite of the series. I love when the zombie comes stumbling towards the kids in the tunnel moaning brrraaaaiiiinnnnnssss!!!!!!!!!!!!

RotLD 1 and 2 were gold, number 3 was utter shit. They're suppose to be satire and homage to the genre, not melodramatic woe-is-me sappy garbage.

Not sure, but here's a definition for you:

In the voodoo-cult of the Caribbean, a zombie is a soulless body that serves a sorcerer as a slave. The soul could have left the body through the regular death rituals, but could also have been removed from a living body by the power of the sorcerer. As lord of the dead, Ghede can restore a zombie to life by returning the soul.

Zombies eating brains have really only been used in the more comedic movies. In "serious" zombie culture, they eat flesh. I like both, but prefer the more serious films. For more zombie info, check out this book: Zombie Survival Guide . A friend of mine got it for his birthday this year. Hilarious book on how to survive in event of a zombie attack.

I'm totally getting that!!! Although... it kinda pisses me off because I had an idea for a "zombie survival guide" quite some time ago.

My office is right next to a funeral home, and I always talk about, "What if the dead came alive? What would we do? We never use that damn fire escape chart, so let's replace it with a zombie survival map." ...and from there it morphed into a, "I should make a guide of sorts... so people know what to do.. in any situation. What if you were at a christmas party and zombies attacked? You'd need to know what to do and make use of... or what if you were at a mall, or amusement park?!"

AND HERE IT IS. MY IDEA! GONE!!!

The book is pretty funny. I own it. Stompy, I wouldn't feel too badly, the author is Mel Brooks' son -- he's got pretty strong humor credentials, so at least you know you think like a funny guy.

Seriously? That's Mel Brooks' son? I had no idea. It is a great book, because it is completely deadpan; he doesn't even give a sly wink to the audience at any point.
