Subtitles usually irritate me because I end up reading more than I watch. But in this case, I knew the story. And because the action was rather slow and deliberate the subtitles did not detract from the flow of the film. So, in this one instance the subtitles did not irritate me. But normally, such as in "Crouching Tiger....", the subtitles really bothered me.

I find them irritating at first, but then after about 10-15 minutes i totally dont even realize i'm reading, and somehow watch and read at the same time. In fact i cant even remember if some movies are in subtitles or not.

A major movie fan misses out on alot of good movies if he doesn't read subtitles. I think it was a bold move to film the entire movie in Arabic and Roman. The movie doesn't have alot of dialog though and the pacing of the film is such that having to read doesn't interfere with the action on the screen. I don't know what to tell ya because I'm with Bal8664, I don't remember if half the movies I watched are subtitled or not.

That right there does not make any sense.
Fans of the movie genre will appreciate what the directors and actors have put onto the film.
As cybermike said, you're going to miss out on a lot of great movies for the fact that they're subtitled.

I suggest you change your title to 'a major entertainment fan' ... then you can knock things if it wasn't what you wanted.

By hating subtitles, you're missing out on some of the best movies ever made. I'm a huge fan of Akira Kurosawa's films, and all of which are in Japanese. Personally, I'd hate watching his movies (or other good foreign films) if they were dubbed. It takes away from the actor's perfomance and the lip synching can never be perfect, so most of the time it looks extremely dumb. Like another poster mentioned, about 10 minutes in, you don't even realize you're reading.

dubbing destroys a film. get over it, learn to deal with subtitles, and evolve into a more conscious film fan.

My thoughts are that a 'major movie fan' would be one who the actores performances on the screen and the directors decisions on putting it together over additional vocals of the dubbing crew (as I mentioned in my original post). Seething makes the point that you're missing some of the most phenominal movies because you "hardly watch foreign films" and I agree 100% with that statement.
If you don't mind me asking, what genre of movies do you enjoy?

Agreed. There are so many great films you are missing out on by avoiding films with subtitles. The 'World Cinema' section is always the 1st one i go to in the video store.
And you're also missing out on the original versions of films and are just seeing the Hollywood butchered remakes.

Don't be afriad of subtitles. Just watch the thing, but the time it's halfway in you'll be use to reading them.

Wait a minute...you're saying that mainstream Hollywood doesn't make the best movies?

But subtitles make me read...reading hurts my head.

Subtitles open the world of film to you. English language films are a just a drop in the bucket when it comes to what has been made and what is "most excellent".

Many of the greatest films of all time were not made in English.
