My mom rented the sequel to a movie we've never seen...
She rented Before Sunset which is the sequel to some really old movie from the 90's that we've never even seen before called Before Sunrise and she expects me to watch that shit. Am I the only one that thinks this stupid?

I can't stand watching a sequel if I've never seen the first one, and I don't understand people who can. Like my roomate, she went to see The Two Towers when she hadn't seen Fellowship of the Ring and knew nothing about Tolkien, and she didn't expect that she would be so confused. You're not alone in finding this strange!

Well it really all depends on the sequel. You can easily watch Aliens without having previously watched Alien. Or Watch Toy Story 2 without seeing Toy Story 1. But i'm assuming before sunset isnt an action/sci-fi/horror or childrens movie :P

1995 is not "really old." Before Sunrise is actually a pretty good movie. I rented it this week because I wanted to get some background before watching Before Sunset, which I've heard is superb.

Not a movie, but a friend of mine read the 16th(ish) book in a series (Shards of a Broken Crown by Raymond Feist) and found it really boring, what with the 2 generations of characterisation and plot development that had occurred previously.

Dude the really long time ago was just an exageration. I was 11 though...considering I'm 20 now it was a pretty long time ago. Almost a decade. Plus I hear the first one was super good and it had a little following behind it. So I refuse to see the sequel if I haven't seen Before Sunrise. I won't understand it for one. Now this is silly but, I saw Jay & Silent Bob strike back before I ever saw Chasing Amy(I had seen Clerks, Mallrats, and Dogma) and I realize now that certain parts would have been a lot funnier if I had. Dunno if thats relevant. My mom is so cute though she got mad and she was like "I looked for Before Sunrise everywhere and they didn't have it!" I think we're gonna wait to see if we can find Before Sunrise before we see it after all. I think it's rather stupid that Blockbuster has Before Sunset and not Before Sunrise. Like having T2 and not having The Terminator, Grease 2 and no Grease, Empire Strikes Back and not Star Wars, Shrek 2 and not Shrek, Matrix Revolutions and not The Matrix, Aliens and not just kidding you get the point. Hopefully we'll find it tommorow cause if not thats ass! Cause I really wanna see Before Sunset. I just remember walking over to the entertainment center and reading what she got and thinking "No we can't see this...we've never even seen the first one!"

Actually, IIRC, Salon.com recommended *not* seeing the first one before seeing Before Sunset. So take that for what it's worth.

Yah! why'd they release LOTR and not the hobbit first! My friends had NO IDEA who Gandalf, Bilbo, or Gollum were.. It was very confusing for them.
The only movies I can think of where I didn't watch the original first are James Bond and Godzilla films.. I don't even know the order they're supposed to be in...
