Purchasing DVDs
So in lieu of the Best Buy profling issues being discussed over in General Discussion something that's been slightly on my mind latley seems appropriate to ask here. I like movies. I like to buy DVDs of those movies that I enjoy watching. I spend a lot of money on DVDs despite usually going for sale items on BB and such. I was wondering people's opinions on where they get the best DVD deals. Amazon.com seems often pretty pricey to me, plus you gotta pay shipping. I generally prefer new DVDs, not used, so ebay et al provide some service, but I was wondering if there was some large discount dvd place I don't know about, online or otherwise. (If otherland, Chicago or at least the Illinois or Iowa area would be preferable).
Happy shopping!

I like to goto Target for more common DVDs.
Suncoast for hard to find and anime. But the best places are local shoppes. I bet if drive around your city, or look in your phonebook, you'll find some place.

I have been buying my DVDs from www.deepdiscountdvd.com
I think they have a good selection. The site seems little slow to browse through, but if you turn off all graphics from your browser, that speeds it up considerably. Free shipping, too. I usually get my DVDs in 3-4 days.

I joined Columbia House DVD club about 3 months ago and have been very happy with it. The online aspect of it means I can pitch the monthly paper package I get from them without digging through it, checking 'no' to the featured selection, and sending it back. Anytime I order, I buy one dvd at the regular price (usualy 20 dollars), and get everything else at 40% off.

Do you mean Rolling Stones on Irving Park in Harwood Heights? I checked the yellow pages and that was all I could find under that name. It's kinda far for me considering I'm Wicker Park/Bucktownish area. Oh, and I joined Columbia House DVD about 4 years ago, and I wasn't real happy with it. I did the math and didn't really find I was saving anything, but perhaps they've lowered their prices since then. Back then only their cheapest DVDs were $20 and everything else was $25-30.

I think they must of lowered prices then. My last 15 or so dvds have averaged about 12.50 per. One of the ways they currently 'get ya' are on pre-orders. For usualy 22 dollars, you can preorder a movie. Why anyone would do this is beyond me. A good example of the current pricing might be:
Shrek 2 List $29.99 Reg $21.95 Sale $13.17 The list price is a number they completely make up I think, the Regular price applies if it's the one most expensive dvd in your order, and the sale price applies to all dvd's after the first. Free shipping too. The cheapest stuff worth having is probably 3/$25, and in that section there are definate gems ala Ghost Dog.

I did most of my buying in the early dotcom days getting them around $5 each. After that I got lots of comps from the industry. Now I'm looking at deepdiscount and other places, but I try to not spend more than $15/disc.
i also use dvdtalk.com to help find better discounts.
