Eminem's slip on SNL

I heard this morning that Eminem was caught possibly pulling an Ashlee Simpson on SNL this past Saturday. Anyone catch it? SNL is turning into kareoke night it seems like. Too bad.

Yep. My wife and I both saw him licking his lips where he clearly should've been mouthing the words. It was almost...too obvious. But, as dumb as it looked, at least he had the fortitude not to run from the stage.

I didnt see it, but for some reason, i knew he was gonna do something like that.

Lockjaw 11-01-2004 02:07 PM

It was on purpose. While I have no love loss for the little psycho he's too talented to be lip synching.

He is rapping. WHat need would he have to lip synch? I don't think rappers are worried about their voices being off an octive or having to hit a particular note. While I didn't see it I wouldn't put it past him to be doing this on SNL as a way of poking fun at Ashlee Simpson who did have something to hide when she was caught lip synching.

I thought lip movement and words weren't quite right, but I wasn't sure.

sorry to ruin the conspiracy theory, but it's standard for him (and other rappers) to have a backing track during performances. he'll often hold the mic out to the audience while the vocal track is playing

Sometimes when rappers actually do rap live, its just horrible. Like the dj will be playing the track, and it sound like the artist is just talking to the beat. I saw the "Get Low" guys on tv doing the song live and it was just horrible. None of them sounded like they did on the track. Sometimes its better to just play the track. If he did lip sync, he obviously did it one purpose to make fun of Ashley S.

Part of Eminem's sound is what is called "double tracked" vocals. In the studio, this means that he records the song once, then goes back and does a second track of the vocals. They usually pan the two tracks a bit to make stereo, and they are just different enough to provide aural interest.

The Beatles did this all the time.

Problem is, Eminem was doing this just a week after the controversy, which I thought made him look bad. That and the fact that the song was horrible.

Has anyone considered that he might have just been poking fun at Ashlee Simpson for blowing it so majorly, or is this just one of those "no way he could've been doing that" kind of things? I don't normally watch SNL, so I didn't see the performance. Just considering that Eminem does that kind of crap, it seems kind of likely he may have just been fucking around.

Maybe his "lyrics" are just too intricate and complicated to be able to remembered. "Let's see, was that the 'I wanna kill my mom' line or was it the 'I wanna kill my ex-wife' line? And which celebrity du jour was it that I want to kill again? And was that a 'ho' on the downbeat, or was it 'biatch'?" And what with him constantly doing quadractic equations in his head, I could see where he might need a little assistance remembering the order in which the great wisdom was imparted.

we do this stuff all the time at the MTV live shows... it's just sometimes easier to guarantee the shot or the performance.

Oh god, this guy thrives on contraversy and media attention.

I have not seen this performance yet, but I will have a look later on. But even sight unseen I would say it was a deliberate and I'll admit it, somewhat clever attempt to garner media attention. In this case he was just being slightly more subtle than usual.

Not at all. The song was boring and totally not of the "cocky" or "poking fun" vein of most Eminem songs. I don't think he was making any comment on her performance. As I stated previously, I think he was just going for that double-tracked sound.

I thought about that, but the slip up was during Mosh (at least the one I saw), and that's a very serious song for him. I can't see him doing anything humerous during something he feels so passionately about.

Reese 11-02-2004 11:20 PM

I've noticed Eminem do this a few times. d12 did 'my band' at one of the MTV award shows and he skipped pretty much every other line. His songs are hard to sing every bit at once AND he has alot of crowd interaction.. come on, you can't keep rapping after a stage dive.

Whether he did it as a shot at ashlee or maybe he even did it as a way of saying that not only pop princess' do things like that.. who knows.
