I just watched the Japanese release DVD, and I thought I'd share some of my impressions after I finished watching it... So here goes:
Basically here's the coles notes: -Live action anime -Lots of super ridiculous anime style fighting -Underlying love story -Shot entirely in front of blue screen (ala Sky Captain) -Fucking Awesome -Confusing as hell, but you love it anyway Apparently it got released in France and didn't do so well... I wonder how the non-anime seasoned public will react to the extremely unconventional fight scenes. There is a ton of eye candy that makes you giddy with excitement because you just never get to see this shit outside of cartoons. I love it... I highly recommend it to anyone who is the remotest anime fan. 8.5/10 ^Lost points because I have no idea what the fuck it was about 90% of the time

I saw it just a week or so ago. I have a few gripes (no spoilers):
1) The movie, as Ace noted, is, for the most part, completely incomprehensible until the end. 2) Because I had very little idea what is going on, the movie seemed a lot longer than it was. 3) From what I can tell, it's being marketed as an epic adventure movie. Now, I haven't been in America for nearly three months, so I don't know what trailers are being run, but the preliminary I saw at Yahoo seemed to show it as a Japanese Braveheart. While this is slightly true, if you go into the theatre (or pop the DVD into your player) with that expectation, you may be disappointed. Just a heads-up. While the subbing was better in Casshern than other movies I've seen lately, I still stress that what you're reading is not exactly what is being said. Given the nature of the film, this irked me a bit. I was the least skilled in Japanese while watching the movie, so I would read a subtext, know that what was written in English was not what was said, and have to ask for clarification on the vocab I didn't understand. While that may sound a bit picky, it left a poor taste in my mouth. On the other hand, this was the most innovative movie I've seen in a long, long time. Moreover, it is definitely the best soundtrack for a movie that I can remember. For a full week, I had the battle theme in my head. If you can find it on eBay for a cheap price, definitely pick it up. Not disappointing in the least.

just now watched it for the first time, all i can say is holy crap. awesome. regardless of the largely fragmented storyline till the finale, see it if only for the fantastical imagery..
the colors, the concepts, the fight scenes, the storyline when it completes, ahhhh. being an anime buff perhaps i would enjoy this more than others, but to see this kind of ridiculous vision brought to live action is fucking awesome. that and the fact that japanese directors dont shy away from giving the vague, not necessarily storybook happy ending, is nice. no punches pulled in this movie. if you like anime, definitely see it. if youve an open mind and are looking for an unconventional approach to film making, definitely see it. hell, if you like films in general see it. duly noted its the middle of the morning, so i may append my impressions upon completion of a night of sleep. but as of right now, ill close in similar fashion to how i opened: holy crap.
