Casino Royale (the movie) was a reasonably loyal update of the novel. We have yet to see if they will adapt further Fleming novels, as they have already adapted most of the others.

Willravel 06-23-2008 12:33 PM

The Quantum of Solice teaser 1 will be released 1 week from today, June 30, on yahoo. The trailer will then be released with Hancock on July 2.

Hain 06-23-2008 12:40 PM

Given the title, can techo-nerds like myself expect a really bad-ass doomsday machine?

Willravel 06-23-2008 01:01 PM

Quantum of Solace is a turn of phrase meaning "the smallest amount of solace". It's probably a double entendre referring to deal with the death of Vesper in Casino Royale and a major plot point in the movie.

Hain 06-23-2008 03:13 PM

Believe you me, I know. I explained this very concept to my friend just the other day, as a matter of fact.

I still think with a title like that, there had better be some damn awesome weapon of mass destruction, like the Icarus, and not something like a stealth boat.

Willravel 06-23-2008 03:40 PM

I think we're done with science fiction for a while. Die Another Day may have been a financial success, but the studios and a lot of fans were pissed that James Bond had turned into a superhero instead of a man. James Bond's source materials were the reason he was made into a franchise. JFK mentioned in an interview that he loved the Ian Fleming novel "From Russia with Love" and that was the genesis of the legend.

As for the storyline, it deals with a natural resource. I won't go into detail because I'm not interested in spoiling anything.

The official teaser doesn't come out until Monday, but this is a 10 second sneak peek.

nice high def trailer

Redjake 06-30-2008 06:20 PM

I would like to take the time to personally thank the trailer for not having any horrible CGI, corny one-liners, and "since the dawn of humanity" spoken in it.

Looks awesome so far - just as gritty as CR. Hopefully the lack of Martin Campbell won't ruin the movie. I was watching Goldeneye today and damn I just love his direction.

Willravel 06-30-2008 06:41 PM

HAHA, "since the dawn of humanity". Yes, sweeping generalizations do tend to run rampant in trailers.

Watch Kite Runner if you're worried about grit, as it has the same director. Quite frankly, I'm expecting this one to be a lot gritter than Casino Royale, and from what I've seen (about 15 minutes of raw footage), it really is.

dirtyrascal7 06-30-2008 07:15 PM

Honestly... I think it looks absolutely outstanding. The stunts, the story, the humor, the girls, the locations, the chases... I'm very, very excited.

Willravel 07-30-2008 08:25 AM

More news. It looks like we have confirmation on the title track for Quantum of Solace.

The title song for the 22nd James Bond film "Quantum of Solace" has been confirmed as "Another Way To Die" by Jack White and Alicia Keys

The title song for the 22nd James Bond film "Quantum of Solace" has been officially confirmed as "Another Way To Die" written and performed by Jack White of the rock band The White Stripes and singer Alicia Keys. The duo were rumoured, individually, in previous news coverage on MI6.

Press Release
Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, producers of the highly anticipated 22nd James Bond adventure "Quantum of Solace," announced today that multi-Grammy Award-winning and platinum selling recording artists Jack White of the rock band The White Stripes, and Alicia Keys, have recorded the theme song for the film, which will be released worldwide this November. Their song, written and produced by Jack White, and titled "Another Way to Die," will be the first duet in Bond soundtrack history. In addition to writing the song, Jack White is also featured as the drummer on this track. The soundtrack to "Quantum of Solace" will be released by J Records on October 28, 2008.

Daniel Craig reprises his role as Ian Fleming's James Bond 007 in "Quantum of Solace," the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures/Columbia Pictures release of EON Productions' 22nd adventure in the longest-running film franchise in motion picture history. The film is directed by Marc Forster. The screenplay is by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade as well as Paul Haggis and the film's score will be composed by David Arnold. Wilson and Broccoli said: "We are delighted and pleased to have two such exciting artists as Jack and Alicia, who were inspired by our film to join together their extraordinary talents in creating a unique sound for Quantum of Solace."

Hopefully the song is as good as "You Know My Name" from Casino Royale.

What if it's like this?!

FYI -- Amazon's Gold Box deal of the day is the James Bond Ultimate Collection (all 21 Bond movies) for $95.99

That was funny; it almost has a David Bowie sound to it.

Willravel 09-09-2008 07:02 PM

I had a friend of mine send me a bootleg of the rough opening sequence of QOS. I believe I can say with certainty that Casino Royale has been improved upon in it's sequel. Expect this to be one of the biggest movies of the year, in fact.

Ah, and the full trailer is now out:

Ooo OOoooo OOOooo!

(am a little excited)

Daniel_ 11-02-2008 09:16 AM

Can't believe I was the last to post on this thread...

Just got home from seeing Q of S at the cinema, and I have to say it's very, very good.

Willravel 11-02-2008 09:29 AM

It doesn't open up across the pond until 14 November because they want the movie to be in the theaters over both major US holidays. Since Harry Potter was postponed to next year, QoS's main competition is now gone.

So what did you like about it (remember to spoiler!)?

Hey Will, how did you get this? Are you in "the biz" or a very connected fan?

abaya 11-03-2008 06:03 AM

Opening Nov 7th here in Iceland... CAN'T WAIT!!! What a fantastic week this is (assuming Obama wins). :D

snowy 11-03-2008 07:50 AM

I am really excited to go see this. Our plan is to watch Casino Royale beforehand, as supposedly QoS picks up almost exactly where the first left off.

It's a funny story, actually. I used to have a myspace page where I showcased music (this is several years back), and maybe a few days after making it I had a German fan. He also happens to be a professional driver that works with big movies like CR and QoS.

Connected fan, then.

Daniel_ 11-03-2008 10:35 AM

Well you need no spoliers to know that t picks up where CR left off, and that Bond is interested in finding out where Vespa's boyfriend is.

It has the same production values as CR and relies on story rather than gadgets. There's no "Q scene", which always struck me as silly in the old movies.

Spoiler: It has a sinister organisation who have infiltrated EVERYONE, and it even seems that Felix has been turned against Bond

Lasereth 11-03-2008 01:58 PM

I'm sorta worried about this movie. I've heard that it is the action of Casino Royale but not the emotion and raw power of every scene. I will go see it because Casino Royale is still one of my favorite movies ever but I am ready for a disappointment. Why is a different director doing it? :(

Willravel 11-03-2008 02:23 PM

It's normal to change directors. Campbell did CR, but before that he only did Goldeneye. I guess he's in charge of the freshmen.

Did you like Kite Runner?

Directing a movie can be exhausting, and it's common for franchises that rely on little downtime between films (like Bond or Harry Potter) to change directors as often the previous film's director is tired/missing their family/etc, especially if the film had a long production cycle.

Charlatan 11-09-2008 06:26 PM

This is the first Bond film to be directed by someone who is not a Brit.

/end trivia

I saw the film this weekend and thought it was pretty good. Not as overall strong as Casino Royal but definitely a solid action film. I am looking forward to the next instalment to see where they take this Bond.

Amaras 11-10-2008 09:21 AM

I grew up watching Bond with my Dad and my older brother. Probably our only "Bond-ing" type of experience together.
That said, Pierce Brosnan was quite capable. I just found the writing on his movies sucked. Same with Timothy Dalton.
Yes, I brought up the script in a Bond discussion. Please don't take away my secret decoder ring!

I loved Casino Royale! Next to Dr. No, probably my favourite Bond film (well, Goldfinger was up there).

QoS opens here the 14th. I like to wait until the crowds die down a bit before I go, so it'll be a couple of weeks
before I see it.

This was my first impression, too, and then I watched it again. And once more. While I'm still slightly put off by the Spoiler: back to back to back chase scenes, though each of them were spectacular, the Spoiler: development of the Bond character (and QoS is ultimately about character) is really engaging. I found it's best to watch CR and then go right into QoS. They operate as two acts from a two-act piece.

After seeing movies like Sin City, I'm starting to like the idea of having different acts of a whole story being directed by different individuals with unique styles. Campbell and Foster are very different, and it lends very well to what's shaping up to be one of the two best reboots of all time (the other being Nolan's Batman). We've seen this situation before with TV shows, but it doesn't get many opportunities in film. If only they'd tapped someone else to write and direct Spider-man 3...

Quantum of Solace: 9.4/10, I'll recommend it to all of my friends.

Same feelings here. Saw it tonight (it opened last Friday here in Iceland) and enjoyed the entertainment--but still thought Casino Royale was better.

LoganSnake 11-14-2008 07:24 AM

I really dislike the direction these new movies are taking. They're based on books, blah blah, but where's Q and all the gadgets as well as out of the ordinary villains?

These new bond films don't have any...magic in them and seem sort of generic. I'm also hearing a lot of mixed review for Quantum, saying that it's not as good as Casino Royale.

There are about 20 movies you can enjoy that have that content (not to mention a million pretenders).

The truth is that Bond was once respected. That gave way over time to silly, formulaic fun instead. I like fun, but fun was killing the series (according to most hard core fans, critics, and the producers). Casino Royale demonstrated that Bond fans were ready for Fleming's Bond instead of Broccoli's Bond.

And QoS is making a metric ton of money overseas right now. It made $106m last weekend.

LoganSnake 11-14-2008 08:38 AM

I guess I'm not fan enough to appreciate the new Bond films. Or just not ready.

Willravel 11-14-2008 09:08 AM

I'm talking about hard core fans of Fleming's novels, not the movies. I'm sure you're a big fan of the movies.

Have you read the novels? I'd highly recommend them.

LoganSnake 11-14-2008 10:11 AM

No, I've never read the novels. Just watched the Bond films since I was around 6 years old, so I grew up on laser pens, tiny bombs and various other kick-ass gadgetry. This new "twist" rubs me the wrong way and makes me feel like I'm watching another Layer Cake with more action.

Nikilidstrom 11-14-2008 02:58 PM

To me they feel like a return to the more traditional Connery/Bond movies, with maybe a little more adrenaline. Connery had some quirky gadgets, but nothing like the Horse's Ass/Tiny Jet, Submarine Car, Cloaking device etc.. of the other Bonds, except for maybe Little Nellie from You Only Live Twice. One of my favorites is From Russia With Love, and if I remember correctly, the only gadget he used was a trick suitcase which hid money, a sniper rifle, and a tear gas anti-theft device, all items with no sci-fi value. To me, it was the Pierce Brosnan flics that became generic with the extremely over the top villains and non stop gadgetry.

I wish they could bring back some of the nonchalantness to the Bond character, instead of being so intense all of the time. Its what indeared me to the Connery version of Bond in the first place. Moore was too much of a clown, and Dalton and Brosnan always seemed like they were doing Chinese Arithmetic, as intense as they were all of the time.

Also, bring back the unique Bond Girl names. Kissy Suzuki, Pussy Galore, Dr. Goodhead.... all classics :)

Willravel 11-14-2008 04:14 PM

Bond girl names? Like Strawberry Fields (of QoS)?
