The new Superman announced!

It looks like Bryan Singer has finally settled on the next actor to portray The Man of Tomorrow.
It's Brandon "BJ" Routh from the soap, One Life To Live.

Routh Is The Man Of Steel!

AT LONG LAST....THE SECRET REVEALED!
After rumor upon rumor posted online about Warner Bros.’ reintroduction of the next “Superman” movie franchise, and just who will be playing the part of the Man of Steel himself, LatinoReview can now put to rest the biggest rumor of all… Just who is “Superman”?
Director Bryan Singer had recently mentioned to AICN that he is committed to casting an unknown. Thanks to our same source 'Anonymous,' who has given us the ‘firsts’ on castings on Fantastic Four, and Batman Begins, we now have info on Superman.
The man who Singer has picked to play Clark Kent/Superman is none other than a relatively unknown actor by the name of Brandon Routh (Seen here in the photo to the right dressed in his own Superman outfit on Halloween last year).
Brandon's name has appeared on the web as being a possible contender a few month’s ago, but most recently appeared on this Iowa based TV website. Click HERE for that.
According to stats posted at IMDB, Brandon ‘B.J.’ Routh stands at 6’ 2” and just days ago celebrated his 25th Birthday on October 9th. Sadly, this is the same day that “our” Superman Christopher Reeve had fell into a coma and later had died. And Routh was born in Iowa, which is the same state that George Reeves was born, one of the original silver screen Superman stars.
Routh had some bit parts in television roles on “One Life to Live,” “Gilmore Girls,” “Will & Grace,” and “Cold Case,” and recently wrapped his first film role in an indie titled “Deadly,” starring alongside Laura Prepon, Misha Collins, and Tess Harper. The actor’s next role will have him undoubtedly put to the test as he has some very big red boots to fill.
And as for Bryan Singer, come June 2006, he will have to make all Superman Fans believe that this kid from Iowa can fly. But if you can recall back when Singer was just starting the now hugely successful “X-Men” movie franchise, he had bet the farm on a then relatively unknown Aussie named Hugh.
Official announcement is forthcoming but you can take this scoop to the bank, Brandon James Routh is Superman!!!

From AICN:
Brandon Routh - The Son of Jor-El, Kal-El, Clark Kent, SUPERMAN?
Hey folks, Harry here with the latest on the casting of Superman. Latino Review is announcing that Brandon Routh is locked in to play SUPERMAN in Bryan Singer's adaptation. Well, a look at the story, I noted several things wrong. First, Christopher Reeve didn't die on Brandon Routh's birthday of October 9th, but rather Reeve passed away on October 10th. Second, George Reeves was not the original Silver Screen SUPERMAN, that was Kirk Alyn. Though technically, several years before Kirk, Bud Collyer voiced Clark Kent/Superman for Max Fleischer's brilliant cinematic animated adventures of Superman. But both of those things are nitpicks.
My sources that led me to have the balls to take Millar's ridiculous bet - told me that they were very close to an announcement, that they had their 'big blue bird" but were waiting for the right juncture to announce it. Then Christopher Reeve passed on, and I can only assume this has pushed the announcement further. My source, being a very clever sadist, told me that the unknown Bryan had cast had a lot in common with a famous Goonies character's favorite candy bar. Knowing that A) Sloth wears a Superman shirt in that Richard Donner film. and B) Sloth's favorite candy bar was BABE RUTH, I've been waiting for a break that fit. Well... this Brandon Routh chap has the same initials, his last name sounds like Ruth (I think) and he's definitely a "babe" of a man? SO - I'm betting the folks at Latino Review have landed the Superhero scoop of the year, even if they fudged a few details, but hey... we all do that. Let's see how long it takes Warners to announce, and how they announce. And when Millar is gonna fork over that $1000?

And an update to the anouncement from Superherohype:
UPDATE!! - We checked with our own independent sources at WB and they confirmed that Brandon Routh is indeed cast as Superman. Our sources added that they don't know when Lois Lane will be cast. They also threw in tidbits that Superman writers Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris were recently spotted on the WB lot going through stacks and stacks of Superman comic books, so it appears that they are going back to the source material for inspiration. Our sources also confirmed that General Zod will be involved in some capacity. More to come!

This is a mighty risk, an unknown being cast is the role of (arguabally) the most popular and well known superhero in the world. This is supposed to be able to go toe to toe with Spiderman and X-Men.
As Batman Begins is looking better and better, this will certinally be one to keep an eye on.

wasn't this also the case when chris reeves was selected for the job? i think it's important that you cast someone who is right for the part, not just some big-name hollywood actor who is looking for another notch on his hollywood-icon belt. as sappy as it seems, there's a bit of magic in seeing superman, and if you don't get that just right, the whole ideal is ruined. personally, i've never seen a better superman than the wb's (and currently cartoon network's) superman... in alot of ways, it's better to see a comic character animated than portrayed by a real person. that was also the case with batman... you will never see a truer portrayal of the dark knight than the wb's early batman: the animated series batman.

I have to agree with you phredgreen. Reeves was a relative nobody and if you ask anyone if they remember a movie he starred in before or after the Superman series they will most likely draw a blank. If the producers of this new installment tried to do what the Batman movies did (cast big names like Val kilmer and George Clooney for their sequels) it would be to predictable and over-the-top. Casting a newcomer should do well. It worked for Reeves and WB's Smallville.

That's pretty cool...I think it will add a lot to have a face that's not as familiar as Superman.

I was gonna say the same thing phred said. I'm glad that they were smart enuff to pick an unknown than a popular Hollywood star from the A list. Wish they'd do the same with Doom and FarCry and other game-to-movie movies.

He Really looks the part. If you remember, Hugh Jackman was an unknown when Xmen was Filmed, He had some Talented actors backing him up but I think that Bryan Singer had more to do with the movies success than the actors.

It's amazing how much he looks like a young Christopher Reeves. I now have high hopes for this and I wish the new guy luck. Man has some really big fuckin shoes to fill. I also have to agree with Phredgreen although I think Keaton kicked fuckin ass as Batman...I hope Christian Bale can brink it back to the good shit. He's done some pretty shitty work though...like American Psycho which was so bad it was great.

Asta!!

Actually I think that the unknown is the only way to go. It worked with the original movies. It also worked with X-men, I mean how many people had heard of Hugh Jackman before X-men? Seriously other than Patrick Stewart, Ian McCellum (sp?) and Anna Paquin, who weren't exactly who you thought of when you thought blockbuster movie (save Stewart with specifically Star Trek), how many of the major actors in the original X-men were unknowns or relative unknowns? Most of them. It allows for the viewer to believe that that dude IS Wolverine, or Cyclops, or Sabretooth. Instead of "Lets see if Clooney can to Batman...", or "Why is Iceman from Top Gun playing Batman?"
