The Grudge

Anyone else excited for this film to come out (10.22.04)? I'm not too sure about Sara Michelle Geller, and the story could either be cheesy, but I think I can get past that. I just want to be scared

The horror it uses reminds me of the horror in The Ring. Lots of tweaky FX and such.

I think (and hope) this and Saw will make for a good batch of Halloween releases

The trailer (not as good as the one I saw on TV):

I'm interested in seeing it as well. I think the pale girl with black hair is a little too similar to The Ring, but I don't think she'll be the focus of the "evil menace". Hopefully... There does seem to be a lot of promise though. The Ring wasn't nearly as scarey as it was hyped up to be, so I hope the only thing they have in common is the girl.

Definitely looking forward to it.

Who wants to bet that just as 'The Ring' was tepid in comparison to 'Ring', 'The Grudge' will suck compared to 'Ju-On: The Grudge'.

Don't see the point of remakes.

yeah, my guess is the original is probably better. i'm not sure about sarah michelle geller either, but the preview did look pretty freaky, so i might check the movie out.

Hm. Looks like a possible nude scene for Sarah-Michelle. That's the first plus.

Second, I want a freakin' GOOD horror movie. And this may be it.

Is "Ju On: The Grudge" a Japanese film as well? I don't mind remakes at all, as long as they're true to the original. I took a film class and we did some reading on how lots of critics use The Ring as an example that remakes can actually better a movie. I too think it's scarier than Ringu.

Some of the visuals remind me of scenes from the Silent Hill games.

I'll be renting it when it hits Netflix.

I was excited about this film until I noticed that it was PG-13. I'm not saying that a PG-13 movie can't be scary, but it's certainly tougher.

Well, this flick is PG-13, so you can kiss that dream goodbye. If I remember correctly, the original was a TV movie in Japan, and was then remade by the same director with a full budget into a full fledged theatrical release. Unfortunately, that release didn't do so well, so I'm a little worried. The same director is trying again, but now not only does he have to figure out what went wrong with the other remake, but now he has to "hip it up" for the American audience (hence hottie, but crap actress, Sara Michelle Gellar). And I'm sure he was contractually obligated to the studios to make a PG-13 flick, so it can be sold to the tasteless kiddies and make more money, which usually means any trace of his original artisitic style has been completely raped from the film. At least the original should be easier to find in the States after this version is released.

It looks creepy as hell, but the PG-13 really ruins it for me. I will wait till I read some reviews before I go watch it.

I recently watch Ju-on: The Grudge by myself, at night. It's ok, slightly creepy, but I found myself laughing aloud at a few places. It's not a good sign when you laugh at a movie that is trying to scare you. A better movie is Tale of Two Sisters. One scene in particular creeped the fuck out of me, and I didn't laugh at all during the flick. Anyway, I'm sure the American version will be worse, but with better special effects.

I dunno about that... The Ring's backstory was a lot more convoluted and confusing than Ringu... took away from the sheer scare factor when you have to think too much

I believe it's done by the same director as Ju-on: The Grudge.
