Shaun of the Dead

For easy reference:

Shaun of the Dead = great fucking movie

It's a british zombie movie that's not quite a spoof, but offers more laughs than a typical horror movie. I know that British comedy is, how do I say....not funny, but almost every joke in this movie works. This is an incredibly entertaining movie, and I can think of no better way to spend $8 this weekend.

3 words. Go. See. It.

sadistikdreams 09-25-2004 07:37 PM

I plan to see it monday.
I am SOOO EXCITED!

I picked up the Night of the Living Dead for hellsa cheap to celebrate, and remind myself of the references.

CSflim 09-26-2004 05:07 AM

It is one of my favorite movies OF ALL TIME. Absolutely fantastic. It's an absolutle must see for any self-respecting zombie movie fan! The DVD is incredible too, LOADS of extras (and they are all pretty good too).

SEE THIS MOVIE.

If you like this movie, I urge you to track down the TV series Spaced, which was written and directed by and starring the same people. It too is damn funny, and absolutely chock-a-block full of pop culture references.

StickODynomite 09-26-2004 10:43 AM

Its so funny. I saw it Friday nite. Such a refreshing style !

Redjake 09-26-2004 11:29 AM

my suitemate saw it a while back, he said it was fuckin' AWESOME. I need to check it out.

mattevil 09-26-2004 12:13 PM

Had to download it becuase i was tire of waiting and it's not playing anywhere remotely close. I loved it and plan to buy the DVD.

inharmony 09-26-2004 02:31 PM

I loved it...well worth the money.

How can you claim that British humour isnt funny? Have you watched Monty Python?

Regardless I still want to see this movie very badly.

CSflim 09-26-2004 03:29 PM

"Early claims that it was a virus spread by rage infected monkeys have now been dismissed as bu...." -newsreader on TV

"We're coming to get you Barbara"- Ed

"Kill the Queen!"

(I love this film to bits)

CSflim 09-26-2004 03:57 PM

Also I would like to mention something which most US viewers wouldn't realise:

Most of the people who you see on the tv are actual newsreaders and tv personalities playing themselves (just like it is with Trisha).
So at the end when you hear Jeremy Thompson (the newsreader) talking about never expecting to ever have to say "Removing the head or destroying the brain" in his career...he was telling the truth!

Monty Python is funny as hell, but British tv is also responsible for shows like "Are you being served?", "As time goes by", and "Keeping up appearances". My local PBS station gets a plethora of british "comedies", and every time I hear the laugh track on those shows, I stop and say "Where was the joke there? Did I miss something?" Regardless, I loved this movie.

Eight 09-27-2004 02:27 AM

Great movie :) Just a bit mad at times.

Like trying to pick which LP's to throw at the zombie. :) :)

Antikarma 09-27-2004 05:21 AM

That movie pwned. Absolutely fantastic, and I won't hesitate to drag all my mates off to watch it. Several times.

CSflim 09-27-2004 01:27 PM

The Simpsons is funny as hell, but American tv is also responsible for shows like "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air", "The Tom Green Show", and "Married With Children". My local tv station gets a plethora of American "comedies", and every time I hear the laugh track on those shows, I stop and say "Where was the joke there? Did I miss something?"

:D

Truth be told, both sides of the pond produce untold of amounts of garbage masquerading as comedy. However, personally I think that Britain has a much better quality/shit ratio going on. And this is coming from an Irishman! We're supposed to hate the Brits!

Just a matter of taste I suppose.

Sargeman 09-27-2004 01:38 PM

What? You're lumping in Married with Children with those shows? That's just sacrileges, dude. Besides Tom Green is Canadian and if I remember correctly, his show was Canadian even though MTV picked it up.

Married with Children is awesome.

Now back on topic. I plan on going to see it as soon as it plays near here.

I think we can agree on that.

fugue_life 09-27-2004 05:21 PM

no sh*t leave "Married with..." alone or I will have to cross the pond and thong you or whatever it is you say over there :)

sadistikdreams 09-27-2004 07:06 PM

I highly recommend this movie.

It was a WONDERFUL movie.

Pretty sad at the end though.

Ok. Got it out of my system. I appolgise for offending anyone! (I rpobably would have chosen worse shows, but couldn't think of any as I am not a huge tv watcher) So, lets not do the whole UK vs. US comedy thing. We don't want to get this thread off track when we should be heaping praise on one of the greatest films ever!

P.S. Did I mention how much Shaun of the Dead rules?

CSflim 09-28-2004 11:58 AM

Just so you know that I wasn't shitting you about the loads of DVD extras:
http://69.93.194.84/~imagehos/imageh....jpg/?id=19544

Yes. That's four commentary tracks. :D

Arc101 09-28-2004 12:56 PM

This film was not as good as I hoped it would be. The same people make a TV series called Spaced which is far better. On the subject of British comedy - if you can ever find it check out The League of Gentlemen. This is a very, very, very strange but also funny comedy series.

m0rpheus 09-28-2004 05:55 PM

This movie was one of the best times I've had at the movies this year. Funny as hell and a great zombie movie to boot.

The thing that shocked me was it was a zombie movie where I actually cared and felt sad when a character died.

Moobie 09-28-2004 08:13 PM

Does anyone know when this flick it supposed to get a wide release? I can't find anything on it. It's number 7 at the box office off of a limited release. That's got to say something.

This is the first movie in a long time that I actually want to go see and I can't. Oh the humanity!

Ace_O_Spades 09-30-2004 08:48 PM

This movie rocks

I laughed my ass off the entire time, now I'm going to the pub for a pitcher with my roommate.

WHat A fuckin Great Movie!

oh and
Married with Children, Bottom and Blackadder Rocks

TheClarkster 10-01-2004 11:59 PM

Probably the best movie I've seen all year.
Gotta love British humor.

gar1976 10-02-2004 12:06 PM

Great movie. Highly recommended.

Shaun: "Ed doesn't have many friends."

Ed: "Any of you cunts want a pint?"

thebub 10-03-2004 01:48 AM

What the... zombie commentary? Interesting... Tell me more CSFlim

It's a commentary track by the zombies. Just an hour and a half of groaning.

I kid. It's some of the actors who played zombies in the film doing a commentary. Haven't listened to it yet.

the_marq 10-04-2004 07:52 AM

I saw it on Saturday. It was great, a high recomendation from me.

As for the whole "British Comedy" debate; quite frankly I don't get most of it. I have seen and enjoyed all the Monty Pyton features, but somehow the "brilliance" of them goes over my head. Don't get me started on the horror that is AbFab...WTF is that all about. Oh well, to each his own I suppose.

As for Tom Green, yes he is Canadian and we're sorry.

pocon1 10-04-2004 09:23 AM

I liked it, the wifey did as well.

mad_sn00gans 10-04-2004 12:26 PM

I saw Shaun of the dead not too long ago, I thought it was hilarious

Probably one of the best movies I have seen all year.

I couldn't stop laughing at the scene when Shaun and Ed find the girl in their back yard and think she is drunk

Shaun: Oh my god...She's so drunk
Ed: Oh..I think she likes you..I think she wants to cuddle

gets me every time...hahaha

that was gold.

Movie was awesome, solid hour and a half of laughs.

enderfax 10-06-2004 02:13 AM

It was a good flick. Gave me a bunch of laughs and it was entertaining, but I don't know. It's got too much hype if you ask me.

That's very strange. It got zero hype or publicity over here.

Is this film getting advertised much over in the US?

joshde 10-06-2004 06:38 PM

Shaun od the Dead was great. The week before I saw it Trio (a directv station) was playing two episodes of Spaced each night. i'm looking forward to getting that on dvd in the states.

I also really enjoyed the first two or three seasons of Coupling, the american version was awful though, and The Office, but i hear they are doing an american version of that as well. I guess we can't let the British have anything good of their own.

CSflim 10-07-2004 02:08 PM

To anyone who liked this movie: You need to see Spaced, which is one of the greatest comedy shows ever made!

Since it probably is very difficult to get a hold of in the US, you can buy it online for quite cheap:
Spaced Series 1, £7.99 (approx $11)
Spaced Series 2, £7.99 (approx $11)
or
Spaced: The Definitive Collector's Edition (3 discs), £16.99 (approx $24)
all prices are including delivery!

Unfortunately, this will not be suitable for everyone as you will need to be able to play Region 2 DVDs and own a PAL compatible television.

Appologies for the sheer shamelessness of this post. It just bothers me how unknown this show is. Most people have never even heard of it. One of the best things to come out of Shaun of the Dead is that more people are hearing about it, and are curious enough to check it out.

virgin 10-07-2004 03:29 PM

British Humour, American Humour, Canadians are bombarded by both. Our local paper said Shawn of the Dead, was probably a better movie because the Brits made it, and I think they were right. It was a fun film, and when the DVD comes to Canada, I will buy it, to put it with my Evil Dead collection. American and Funny !

Kagemusha222 11-04-2004 04:46 PM

This movie was so amazing... me and my friends saw it when it was playing in NY and I ordered the DVD over the internet (it should be coming in next week)... It was just a well made zombie movie, not even considering how funny it was. The make-up and SFX were dead on... I hope that we see more movies like this coming soon, horror-comedy done right...
