Lost (possible spoilers)

Did anyone catch this last night?

Oh.
My.
God.

So good! So so very good. I'm not sure that I actually breathed during the entire hour. Basically the idea is this place crashes on an island, and theres some weird creature on the island that freaks everyone out.

The pilot was split into two parts, part 2 airs next week, and ABC I think is showing both parts together on October 2nd. This show is good. Seriously. Watch it.

Dog of Doom y'all.... Dog of Doom.

Yeah...I was entertained.
I am concerned that it may get ridiculous real fast, though. I mean...c'mon, what the hell is that thing that's trampling the trees, and tearing surviving flight crew from the cockpit? Did they crash on Isla Nublar (Jurassic Park), or what?
Still...it looks like it has a lot of promise (other than that), and Kate's a babe.

Holy crap! The wife and I settled down to watch what we thought would be Gilligan meets Survivor, and we were BLOWN AWAY!

The dog is definitely a big deal somehow. Also, in the flashback before the crash, who was the guy running up the aisle to the bathroom? Was that Charlie, and wasn't he acting funny in the bathroom when they found the cockpit section? What did you make of the comment that someone was positive they'd heard that sound somewhere before? And they guy who sits on the beach and puts orange sections into his mouth?

I spent the first five minutes trying to remember where I'd seen Jack before, and I finally placed him as Charlie from Party of Five.

This show is loaded with Stephen King influence. Langoliers, Dark Tower, etc.

I didn't watch because it sounded too close in premise to the show on a few years back about the plane that crashes in the Amazon -- hmmm -- guess I'll have to tune in...

Okay, here's my thoughts:

Dog - Yeah, gonna be a big deal. Dog of Doom!!

Charlie - Pretty sure that was him running down the aisle. I'm thinking he's got himself a little coke habit. Notice he went back into the bathroom when Charlie, Jack and Kate were in the crashed cockpit?

The Comment - I don't remember that, actually. But in things like this theres always that "I've seen/heard something like that before" aspect.

Orange Guy - That part creeped me out!

Jack - Yup, Charlie from Party of Five. I have to remember that he's not Charlie on this show... He's so pretty though. Shirtless Jack. Yeah, we'll need more of that.

From what I've heard, the whole first season takes place over 1 month. My worry is how long they can keep the series going. It's great so far, but can it last? I really hope so. It would really make for a great mini-series I think, but I hope ABC gives it a shot and lets JJ Abrams do his thing.

Mal, watch this show! It's really really good.

A.) Didn't catch that Jack was "Charlie" from Party of Five, but then again, when I was watching Party of Five, it wasn't Charlie that I was focusing on.

B.) Yeah, I also caught that they were focusing an inordinant amount of attention on that Golden Lab.

C.) I was also thinking cocaine habit for Charlie.

D.) Shirtless Jack, hell. How about a shirtless Kate? Any doubt that these two are gonna be getting it on within...oh, say...3 more episodes? Tops.

I caught it too and thought it was pretty good. I'll withold judgement for another episode or two though.

The monster thing is a little bizarre and I hope they don't make the show too ridiculous.

I don't think the dog will end up meaning too much though. Probably something like he/she was on the plane as well and once found by Matt (that's the party of five guy's name right?) the dog will probably lead him to the monsters lair or to some other important place.

In USA today they said that the Asian couple only spoke Korean but it seemed more like Japanese to me. Anyone know for sure?

Anyway, I look forward to next week's show.

The monster is Godzilla. Why else would the japanese couple be so scared?

I also loved the start. Really sucked me in. And speaking of being sucked in, I also liked the engine that was still running on the beach. I told the wife that someones getting sucked into that thing for sure....and sure enough...bam! Some dork gets sucked in.

And isn't there some general rule that airlines have which says that a woman who is almost to term with her pregnancy cannot fly? I don't know really, but I'm not sure the airlines would have let that pregnant woman fly in that condition.

Did you watch the previews for next week? They showed a flash of Kate standing on the beach in a bra and black thong panties.

I forgot to ask this earlier, but I'll give it a go now. How can the first episode of a serial drama be considered to be a "two-parter?" Isn't it just simply episode one and episode two, aired a week later?

It would be different if the second part were aired the same night or maybe the next night. But next week?

Really enjoyed the first episode. It's too early to make to many guesses, but I'll throw some of mine in anyway.

I think Charlie+ Drug problem is a red herring. Way too obvious. However, I think he left something in that front bathroom and that's why he was so anxious to go with Jack and Kate.

Rumor has it that not everyone who is on the beach was on the plane...

Did anyone notice while jack was giving his "count to five" speech that there was a tatoo on his shoulder with the number 5 in it? Just wondering.

I just hope they don't kill off the fat guy too soon. Lord, the fat guy is always one of the first to go.

I'm not sure if the tattoo is something the actor, Matthew Fox, actually has. If it is, it could be in reference to his old series, Party of Five.

Oh, and if people have spoiler type things, PLEASE use spoiler tags!!! I'm doing my best to keep myself from being spoiler free with this show. To do this all you have to do is [ spoiler ]Inside info[ /spoiler ] (but without the spaces)

I was thinking the same thing. Spoiler: That old guy with the oranges or whatever probably crashed there previously. There's got to be a reason that being in a group protects the people somehow since the "monster" wouldn't come near the whole group.

It's definitely some kind of Bermuda triangle type thing where others have crashed or been stranded there before.

I absolutely loved it. Great show, imo.
Here's my theory on the monster:
It's a rogue elephant that somehow was washed up on the island and has slowly gone crazy. (it could happen)

The guy that ran by Jack on the plane was definitely Charlie.
(I taped it starting from when the large gent was passing out food and slow-moed it through the scene.)

Wasn't this plane out of Fiji? If so, they might have different policies regarding pregnant women.

Can't wait for the next one.

Edit:
p.s. Oh yeah, I have a theory on the plane's crash. It was sabotage.

I loved it also.

The dog - is it possible he is a seeing eye dog for the old guy with an orange in his mouth? I found it odd that he was just sitting on the beach while it was raining. To me, it was like he didn't know how to get anywhere since he was out of his normal area. Just my thoughts. I thought the scratch above and below his eyes made him look like a mime without the makeup when he smiled with the orange in his mouth. I laughed out loud!

Great show, I'm finally going to watch a series on television. I haven't done that since the beginnings of ER.

The monster/weird thing in the jungle is my only concern of this show getting "stupid". Please don't happen!

Flying while pregnant

Domestic airlines prohibit women from flying after the 36th week of pregnancy, and most foreign airlines have a cutoff of 35 weeks gestation – to avoid the unpleasant possibility of giving birth en route.
However it's a television show, adds to the drama

I thought either Charlie had/has a coke habit and/or something to do with the crash especially since he was running down the aisle towards the cockpit (ie bathroom perhaps he hid something, drugs or whatever, there before the crash and got it back when they found the front half of the plane).

Isn't the dog the little black boys? I thought it was kinda implied because he had said something about him and the dad said he would be okay or something like that.

Could be wrong.. Alot better that I thought it would be definitely stick around for the next episode.

I've gotta say that Gilligan's Island meets Jurasic Park 3 is an original idea. I'd like to see other pairings of this sort. Star Wars meets Bewitched, Forest Gump meets Gone with the Wind, the Matrix meets the Munsters (thinking Grandpa is Morpheus and Herman is the One), Glory meets Sanford and Son, and Family Ties meets Gladiator. You are welcome, ABC.

I thought I saw two guys in uniform, probably flight attendents, chasing Charlie after he bumps into Jack. There's something more to it than him just doing coke in the bathroom.

I thought the orange guy was interesting, he looked alot like Marlon Brando who of course did the same bit in The Godfather.

It wasn't anything special, but it was well done. It's normally hard for a show like this to maintain the suspense level as it continues, but as BOR said, the promise is there.

Haven't had a chance to see the show yet, due to a lovely night class. Looks like I'm missing out.

Amonkie, according to these articles, the thing you mentioned was in addition to the giant creature.

Spoiler: There’s a polar bear that doesn’t seem to belong on the South Pacific island on which the characters are stranded. There also seems to be something Kong-size lurking in the distance, but neither we nor the characters get any kind of real look at it. We just see huge chunks of forest getting stomped down. And Greg Grunberg, who cameos as the crashed plane’s pilot, is viciously snacked upon by something both colossal and unglimpsed.

Here's two links to different reviews and interviews with one of the writers.
They contain spoilers and semi-spoilers.
Also, I would have copy/pasted them here, but they are just too damned long.
You'll just have to excersize your finger.

I am so geeked for this show to succeed. This is the first show since the first CSI (imho) that is truly original. I thought the first episode was a bit overly dramatic and so did my hubby (he was watching a sporting event in another room and was flipping over to "Lost" during commercials, which says a ton 'cuz he never watches t.v. "series" but was interested in "Lost").

I hope they tone it down a little so I can actually get my hubby to watch the show with me. That said....

The first episode had sooo many overtones of Stephen King and/or Michael Crighton. Does anyone know if either of them are invovled with the show?

First off: The engines running on the beach. Neither I or Hubby are experts but he watches Discovery Wings all the time and plays with that Flight Simulator all the time. He said that there is no way the engines, separated from the plane, and therefore their fuel source, could have gone on running that long. I don't know, but logically that makes sense to me (and I was thinking that while watching the show). If that's possibly true, then the guy that got sucked into the engine was just a drama ploy (because it was maybe 1/2 hr. after the plane crashed, givin Jack's supposed blackout time to when he wandered onto the beach and then the time lapse before the engine sucking happend).

The orange guy: The thought, that a couple of you have said, about him being a previous crash survivor is interesting. I didn't come to any conclusions, except that he was too much like a (again) Stephen King or Dean Koontz character to even begin to guess where he might fit in. He's weird, vaigue and didn't even try to interact with anyone.

The dog: See right above

Charlie: It's just cool to see Merri or Pippen (which ever one he is) in an American tv show!! I didn't put too much thought into his character until they were in the nose of the plane. I noticed he was gone by the time the other two got to the cockpit, but didn't even think to atribute it to drugs. I thought he/it was along the lines of the orange guy/dog/Jurassic Park creature in the woods, ala SK, DK or MC (see above), weird and an unknown.

The fat guy: I agree, I hope he's not one of the characters that buys it early on. That'd be one step towards body acceptance in this world if he stayed. I'm not holding my breath though, he was in the first episode but had a bit part and nothing that cemented him to the main story.

The "Creature in the Jungle": This I think they could've done without. The premise is drama enough, can anyone say "Castaway?". I love Sci-Fi or Adventure Fiction as much as the next person, but really, don't these people have enough on their plates to deal with without adding some "scary" beast in the jungle to their burden? I hope it quickly becomes some weird monkey/elephant freak hybreed that they confront and kill and is then out of the picture. I just can't see this show lasting beyond a season or two with the "beast" not killed quickly. I really hope they eventually focus on the people that are on the island (please, otherwise my hubby won't take to it and it'll become a weekly Wed. night battle over who has to watch the 13" tv! ).

alicat - i actually like the addition of the creature. to me, it adds to the show. they can't just worry about being rescued, they have to worry about surviving the jungle. every trip in to gather food and fire wood will be a risk. i like it, as long as it isn't some godzilla like creature or something WAY over the top.
