SKY CAPTAIN!!!!!!
Just got back from the premier of this movie in Salt Lake, can i say WOW!!!
It looked pretty good from the trailers but i was still skeptical from the PG rating, but it was really really good. especially if you like the whole early cinema - comic book type films this is a not to be missed one!!!! has a Metropolis feel to it cant believe that the entire movie was filmed in front of a blue screen either!!! |
Oh thank god a good review, I'm going to see it tomorrow and was worried that I would be paying to see a crappy movie.
|
The reviews have been quite positive actually.
Try http://www.metacritic.com/ or http://www.rottentomatoes.com/ I saw a trailer for it, and I was blown away. I definitely want to go see it sometime. Glad to hear that a tfper liked it. |
Hmm you guys really think it'll be good? Looks sort of stupid to me, no offense.
|
It looked interesting- though when I first saw the trailer, it was all in black & white, and now it's sort of sepia-tone colored. Were they always planning on doing that, or was it doctored due to audience whining?
|
Oh man, this is the one movie I have been waiting eagerly for all year! Being a huge Sci-Fi nut, AND a huge Noir nut - I'll be in line ASAP! :D
|
HOT GARBAGE! That's what this movie looks like. The blue screen effects are horribly done. I can't wait till they stop showing these trailers for it so I can use my eyes again
|
Blegh, I don't care for the effect thing they have going that makes the movie look like a comic book.
The movie doesn't appeal to me at all. |
I can appreciate that they are trying something new. The whole 'only-thing-thats-real-is-the-actors' thing is an interesting idea. Unfortunatally, the storyline is dryand fairly predictable, which ruins the movie.
Warning to all sci-fi movie makers: please consider using a good script before trying to debut a new movie technology. At least Attack of the Clones was pretty good (first 100% digital film). It gives the new technology a good root to grow and evolve further. |
Saw it last night. Here's a review I e-mailed to a friend. Spoilers of various sorts are in here.
Visually, I really enjoyed it. Especially the NY scenes. I enjoyed the muted-technicolor thing. I read that the director wanted to do all b&w but was told foreign distributors wouldn’t go for it. I thought that overall, it was a visually stunning flick. That being said, I couldn’t decide what the movie was trying to achieve. I thought the humor was excellent – there were some really funny, unexpected lines, like Spoiler: the very last one of the film, which was AWESOME, or when Polly said she shot the ground while she was running. But there was a lot of unintentional humor in it too. A lot of the lines were very campy but I didn’t feel like the movie was winking to the audience and giving us the vibe that they were trying to be campy. It just felt serious, and as a result, I laughed at a lot of things that I don’t think they wanted us to laugh at. Plot wise, it was stupid. They didn’t really resolve anything and while Spoiler: the last line made me okay with the ending, I was really surprised that the movie didn’t reach some kind of resolve in New York. The first 30 minutes really made me feel like this was a “New York” movie (the same kind of feel I got from Ghostbusters, actually), and I wanted it to return to that half past, half future world. There was really very little chemistry between Paltrow and Law. And I saw really no point in Angelina Jolie at all, I felt it was more a waste of her talents and just an excuse to get another big name involved. At other times I thought the movie was shamelessly derivative of other movies: Metropolis, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park – even the soundtrack sounded like John Williams, who did those last three (plus Superman). Overall, though, it was still a fun movie. I had a good time. I’m glad I didn’t pay $10 to see it, but I was definitely entertained. |
:) I saw it with Quadro... I dug it too... entertained me quite well.
|
yeah, good, if not great- what excites me is that since this shows that all cgi can work, we may see a whole lot of films made for less- gives some stuff that would never have seen the light of day a shot at the big screen- course thats for better and for worse-
|
sorry to disappoint... but i was underwhelmed. i fully expected to like it, but it just didn't deliver. the style and cinematography are enough to keep you occupied... but the plot develops awkwardly.
|
Just got back from the movie. It was all I expected it to be and more.
Two thumbs up here. |
I saw it yesterday and have to say that I think it is a great movie in the style and spirit of Buck Rogers and campy sci-fi. It is purely a "fun" movie and for me it succeeded to that end.
|
I enjoyed it as well. IMy only complaint was the softness of the image. My eyes bothered me a bit by the end of the film.
|
Fucking beautiful.
|
I liked it. It helped me feel like I was a kid again, and was just plan fun to watch.
I watched it with buddies and it made it better. It really is one of those sitatuations of "Why are you coming to watch this film to expect intelligence, just have fun". Come to think of it, why do people always complain about something not being "Intelligent"? Are they not intelligent enough themselves to feel adequate? Are they so dependent on what others can supply Hmm anyways, I liked the film, it made me laugh, and really the only thing that was annoying is because it was a PG film all the previews were Kid oriented PG movies that didn't win me over. |
I loved it. As far as the plot, lets face it they weren't trying to re-invent the wheel here. It was a 30's movie serial plot, nothing more nothing less. Thats a bad thing.
As far as effects go, wow. Just brilliant pretty much sums it up. |
Wow, i thought it looked really bad in the previews, maybe i need to get out and see it.

that quotation is not "an old Klingon proverb", but rather a line from the play Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1782) by Pierre Ambroise Francois Choderios de LaClos. Specifically, "La vengeance est un plat qui se mange froid". Just thought you might like to know. :) Mr Mephisto |
Love the p-40. My favorite plane. Went home and loaded up Il2 and I want his modified plane. Even at 400kph I could only go vertical for about 1500m before stalling. I tried to turn like ol' Cap and went into a stall and flatspin. Fire in my wing root usually cost me the wing in about 20sec. Water was leathal. Oh well I guess Ill have to play crimson skies again.

Cool movie!! Stylistically, reminded me of 1930's Flash Gordon. Like having a good dream.
|
I actually hadn't heard of the movie untiL I was offered free tickets, so I didn't have any expectations for it.
Story wise it was somewhat lacking, and the beginning started off to quickly for my liking, but overall I really enjoyed the movie, and thought the robot designs and film style was really cool. And Paltrow was really hot... |
The hubby and I went to see this last night. Because I read this post yesterday, I went in just trying to enjoy it....and I did, thanks. It was a "fun" movie. Did anyone else notice this: Spoiler: The movie that was showing when she met the Dr. was "Wizard of Oz" that has the tin man in it, and then not long after the metal machines show up? Maybe it was just me.

hmm for starters this is pulp fiction era material not the movie pulp fiction the era. you know humphrey bogart movies, flash gordon the like..
its like godzilla yeah it was cheezy and you knew it but you still like godzilla. I have given up on going to the movies due to the fact i have to watch 4-6billion comercials now then a limited few previews then the movie. they did this to drop prices on tickets.. bah. Ill buy the dvd set it on my sweet home system and have the neighbors talk out side my window.. nuff said. anyways. I enjoy any classic scifi movie or horror for that matter.. horror? yeah it used to exist.. not the lame slasher movies from late 80's on up. peace |
