Movies you hated the first time you saw them

What are some movies you hated when you saw them in the theatre, only to rewatch them and love them. For me, it was Road to Perdition.

I left the theatre totally pissed. Now, I can't turn it off when it comes on HBO every other day.

Fremen 09-16-2004 03:47 PM

Well, I just watched The Big Lebowski for the first time today and I pretty much hated it, if you can call it hate.
It just left me with a feeling of Wtf?-ness.
Don't know if I'll see it again.

Dane Bramage 09-16-2004 04:55 PM

Couple of movies I hated the first time I saw them:

Starship Troopers: couldn't (and still don't) understand how they can have faster than light travel, yet still use bullets in their guns :-/

Fifth Element: dunno why I hated it so much. Just did.

But now that I have seen them a couple of time, I really love both those movies. Oh well, go figure.

09-16-2004 05:02 PM

Being Human
Fight Club
Fear & Loathing
(call me wierd)

mystmarimatt 09-16-2004 07:21 PM

American Beauty. Although I bet it had more to do with the fact that I watched it with my mother. The second time I saw it I was just awestruck.

KellyC 09-16-2004 07:50 PM

Movies that I hate the first time watching it will only make me hate it more the next time around...I'm so bitter!

Rdr4evr 09-16-2004 08:01 PM

I agree with KellyC, If I hate it the first time, why would I like it the second? If anything, I would hate it more.....but than I would be a fool for watching something I hated the first time a second time anyway. ;)

Mr. Spacemonkey 09-16-2004 09:23 PM

Fucking Mullholland Drive

I hated it so much when I saw it, I don't think I could find the will to sit through it again. Damn, that movie fucking sucks!

MageB420666 09-16-2004 10:17 PM

Sorry but any movie I hate the first time I see it I'm not gonna watch a second time.

Dingo2879 09-17-2004 07:15 AM

Joe versus the Volcano
I hated that movie when it first came out, but for whatever reason I watched it about a year ago and loved it. I have since then bought it and watch it from time to time

"Take me, to, the volcano!"

espi 09-17-2004 10:13 AM

Pulp Fiction. The first time I saw it I just couldn't get my mind wrapped around the shifting timelines. But everyone kept telling me I was nuts for not liking it, so I watched it again. They were right, I was nuts. Great movie.

I feel the same way about Once Upon a Time in America, for similar reasons. I'm sure if I saw it again I would like it. I mean, how wrong can you really go with Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, James Woods, and Danny Aiello in the same movie?

Don't know if I'll see it again.

The key to watching The Big Lebowski is to realize that it's just a story, and there's nothing to get. Once you get into that mindset and can appreciate The Dude for being The Dude it becomse much better. I had the same problem when I first saw it, but I love it now.

stonegrody 09-17-2004 11:00 AM

Austin Powers. The first one. The first time I watched it, I had to turn it off because it was so bad. Now when I watch it, I can't stop laughing. Not sure why I didn't like it the first time. Maybe it was the people I was watching it with...

World's King 09-17-2004 11:05 AM

Fight Club.

I still don't really like it but I do understand now why everyone else liked it. I had to read the book to understand.

That movie is one of my favourites!

THANK YOU! There's actually a guy out there who doesn't like this movie? Wow, I'm impressed. Kudos to you.......

radioguy 09-18-2004 07:26 AM

Clerks - being in black and white bugged the hell out of me. Now, I can't get enough of it.

(I didn't see this in a theater, hope that doesn't disqualify me :))

Nancy 09-18-2004 03:00 PM

boy there are so many but Ghosts of Mars and the Texas Chain Saw Massacre are the only ones that comes to mind at the moment

nottwood 09-18-2004 03:15 PM

Clockwork Orange

CSflim 09-18-2004 03:51 PM

Well I can't think of any movie that I changed my mind from hating to liking after a re-watch, but certain movies do improve with repeated viewing.

After watching The Big Lebowski for the first time I came out of the opinion that it was merely "very good". After a re-watch, it was upgraded to "excellent" status, and after the third viewing it became "arguably the greatest film ever made!" (where it has stayed for many further viewings!!)

After watching Pulp Fiction for the first time, I felt that it was OK, but horribly over-rated. On the second time I watched it, I felt that I "got it" more, and found it much funnier, (I was a few years older which may explain why)

Fremen 09-18-2004 06:52 PM

I just rewatched The Cell, starring J-Lo and Vincent D'Onofrio, and it stunk as much as the first time I saw it.

yakimushi 09-18-2004 08:44 PM

Going to have to change this post because I didn't read it right. I only posted movies I hated.

I can't say that there are any. If I hate a movie once, I don't go back and watch it again.

soccerchamp76 09-19-2004 07:13 AM

Shawshank Redemption

My dad would always watch this movie and I thought it was the most boring movie ever. One day though, I sat down and watched the movie in its entirety and it was such an amazing movie.

So you are saying that now that you've watched Ghosts of Mars multiple times you enjoy it? I'm sorry, but that movie was horrid. I hope you are saying that it was the worst movie ever made and you will never watch it again, not that you enjoy it now that you've wasted the many hours to grow fond of it!

Edit - I guess I could contribute.. I can't think of any readily available movies that I've hated off the bat but forced myself to watch for the greater benefit of there actually being something there.. Maybe Napoleon Dynomite..

To me CLOCKWORK is the best movie ever made but ill leave it at that b/c that statement belongs in another thread.

but to answer the thread, "gummo" "solaris" the ORIG. one

Willravel 09-19-2004 04:29 PM

Vanilla Sky, Spy Game, StarWars 1 Pahntom & 2 Attack (now I LOVE these movies), The Transporter, Van Wilder, Hero, Pirates of the Carribean, Die Hard with a Vengance, Independance Day (Will Smith saves the world by not singing), Resident Evil 2, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, THX 1138, and that Adventure of Yellowdog movie (forgot the whole name).

Private Public 09-19-2004 05:54 PM

I hated 28 Days later but I got the DVD free yesterday at a pawn shop after buying a few others and for some reason it seems better.

sapiens 09-19-2004 06:10 PM

Waking Life. What a horrendous film! I saw it in the theater. I sat through the whole movie wanting to leave. I didn't leave till it was over. Damn my indecision!

Redjake 09-19-2004 07:17 PM

is this thread about movies you hated the first time you saw them, or movies you hated the first time you saw them, and watched them a second time, and loved it? keep on topic people!

For me:

Austin Powers
The Secret Garden
High Plains Drifter

omega2K4 09-19-2004 09:28 PM

The Insider. Holy shit. The most boring movie ever made. Its about the tobacco industry, and damn, it was kinda like watching CSPAN for about 3 hours.

mattevil 09-26-2004 12:07 PM

The Wild Bunch
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
Dawn of The Dead
Straw Dogs
The Ten Commandments
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Tombstone
own all of them except wild bunch on dvd(it's got a SE coming soon)

hunnychile 09-26-2004 05:31 PM

"The English Patient." I dunno, I was bored outta my mind. Never looked at my watch so much in my entire life (except for jury duty). The 'hub' thought it was great art....go figure.

Maybe Elaine from Seinfeld & I have more in common than I thought. SHe was right on, and yep, I have used the 'sponge worthy' rationale a few times myself in my former life. Ha!

Seething 09-26-2004 06:09 PM

I didn't like Unbreakable the first time I saw it. Now, after watching it a couple more times, I love it. I think it's an awesome movie, and one of M. Night's best.

On the other hand, I hated Signs when I first saw it in the theatre, and I still fucking hate it.

RedCometChar 09-27-2004 09:57 PM

I agree about Austin Powers. The first time, I was like, "This shit is below contempt". I don't know exactly what changed my attitude on it, but I do really like it now.

fugue_life 09-28-2004 07:14 PM

I thought Zoolander was stupid as hell, I got it as a gift and somehow watched it more and more. it gets funnier every time. Now I realize it has two amazing things going for it... The most amazing cinematic acheivement ever (gasoline fight) and WIll Ferrell. Can you really hate a movie with Will Ferrell??

Architeuthis 10-07-2004 02:14 AM

"Highlander 2" on opening night made me go serious "WTF !"

maximoff72 10-07-2004 06:00 AM

Zoolander..... It was so dumb the first time I saw it. Then I watched it again while i was with the lady and I noticed more things that were funny, like background stuff. I still love to put her in while driving....

Kepage23 10-08-2004 11:07 PM

Austin Powers. I thought it was the dumbist movie I had ever seen. Not funny dumb, just plain stupid. Now I think they are some of the funniest movies out there.

Reese 10-09-2004 12:05 AM

Chicago... couldn't make it through it the first time but the second time It was really good.

Also the Newest Star Trek movie. I thought it really sucked at the theater but I liked it when I watched it on DVD.

My tastes in movies changed alot about 3-4 years ago there are alot of really famous movies that I didn't like then but I do now.

Don't know if I'll see it again.

A couple friends of mine live by this movie. They forced me to watch it and I hated it. They say it's a movie you hate the first time, but love the second. I haven't ever had the slightest urge to sit through a second showing.

alansmithee 10-09-2004 12:40 PM

I didn't see it in the theaters, but I just couldn't understand Eraserhead the first time I saw it (and I think I fell asleep). Saw it again, and I still didn't understand it much, but I liked it alot more.

paddyjoe 10-09-2004 12:56 PM

Ghandi

I mean Jesus, what was this fucking thing, 13 hours long, or what?

hunnychile 10-11-2004 04:04 PM

I thought 'The Cell' was gross and unworthy of my time. Same goes with 'Pulp Fiction.' Sorry, I just have trouble glorifying criminals in movies and I prefer a movie that is on a higher level on consciousness and more artistic. I don't need to have nightmares from movies I rent for entertainment.

dbc 10-11-2004 06:20 PM

Red Jake's avatar reminded me of one. I didn't like Blues Brothers the first time I saw it. But when I watched it again I thought it was better.

Tralls 10-13-2004 02:11 PM

Pulp Fiction. I was so stoned when I saw it I didnt realize it wasnt going in order. My friends and I walked out when we saw Travolta was alive after being shot. Didnt realize the next scene helped explain everything! Saw it later witha little clearer head and loved it!

tom12 10-13-2004 07:33 PM

have to agree about Big Lebowski

and i didnt like napolean dynamite at first but now i'm in love with it

theo5222 10-13-2004 09:24 PM

After seeing Fight Club the first time I was completely disappointed. But now I have to admit that it is one of the sweetest films in the past decade.

Xenomorph 10-13-2004 10:15 PM

Same thing with Fight Club. When I watched it before I read the book I was unsatisfied. After reading the book, though, it's a lot better.

Durins 10-15-2004 08:12 AM

Aladdin. Too many screaming kids around me to enjoy it. Now one of my favorites.
Honeymoon in Vegas. Wasn't funny. Now I 'get' it, and LOVE it.
Fight Club. Umm...OK. Now, it's worth watching pretty often.
Moulin Rouge. Walked out scratching my head, ended up with that as the theme at my wedding and dancing to the main love song.

portwineboy 11-04-2004 10:25 AM

Fifth Element - first time I was expecting a "serious" sci-fi flick. second through hundreth times I realized this was a very slick comedy.

13th Warrior - not sure what I was expecting from this the first time around but when I watched it again I decided that some of the dialogue was really witty and well written.

I know there is one more but I just can't think of it now....

McG 11-04-2004 10:23 PM

I also didn't like Austin Powers the first time i watched it, but now I love it. Must of been in a bad mood.

Val_1 11-06-2004 04:39 PM

Lord of the Rings (FotR and TTT). Probably because I loved the books so much that I kept critiqing them in my head the first time I saw them. But, I love them both now. Jackson did an excellent job. Of course, Return of the King was brilliant the first time through.

sapphire 11-10-2004 05:53 PM

The first time I saw Pulp Fiction and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas I hated them now they are two of my favorites

stbeston 11-10-2004 09:43 PM

i actually hated blue velvet the first time i saw it. or if not hate, i thought the acting and direction were laughable and the pacing retarded. now i know that i was the retard. it is nothing but brilliant. oh, jeffrey beaumont...

Catmandu 12-27-2004 10:17 AM

All 3 Lord Of The Rings films. I know what you're going to ask... Why did I watch 2 and 3 if I hated the first one. It's because everyone said 3 was soo good. As it turned out, 2 was a total waste of time for me. The movie pretty much started and ended at the same point, with a lot of dead freaks in between. As for 3, I would consider every one of the other Oscar nominees a better flick (I saw non-nominated "In America" last night... It was superb). I will agree that Peter Jackson definitely deserved recognition for the scale and scope of the project. Just call me Mr. Minority Opinion. :)

holtmate 12-27-2004 03:14 PM

The first time I saw So I Married an Axe Murderer, I couldn't stand it. Now, it's one of my favorite comedies.

Tophat665 12-27-2004 04:37 PM

I've had this happen with books, but not with movies. I can't recall a movie that I really hated in a theatre that I liked when I saw it later. I expected to hate Spice World, but it turned out to be not half bad. Ditto Beavis and Butthead.

Books, on the other hand, I have that happen all the time. The First time I tried reading Camus' The Plague I absolutely loathed it. The second time, 10 years later, it really is an awesome book.

hunnychile 12-28-2004 05:49 PM

Catmandu is right.
And IMO LOTRs 2 is a TOTAl waste of time and money. But then I like the books better. Go figure.

hunnychile 12-28-2004 05:51 PM

If you want to waste money, rent "Van Helsing".

Geez, it's a waste of time.

BLASHPHEMER!!!!!!

blitz.fenix 12-29-2004 09:38 AM

I watched LOTR in the cinema and i hated it. Then I rented it and watch it from the comfort of my home and I liked it. Same goes for the sequels until I watched them at home. Totally changed my opinion when I watched them at home. I really like the series.

NEVER INSULT VAN HELSING...

well actually go ahead insult Van Helsing, but not the person who played Van Helsing, my idol , my (platonic) love, Hugh Jackman... He adapts to every role

Sure it was a crap movie, sure it sucked. But he was what made it possbile to actually enjoy. Sure bag me out, but he went to my school, he had the same dreams and ambitions as me. And sure as hell do I want to be like him

Anyway Ive never not liked something and then liked it. I had the opposite with Matrix Revolutions.

im going to have to agree with you, although i liked the 2nd one most seeing as how there was killing to make up for the boredom, but the 3rd one, i could do nothing but make fun of it the entire time it was so bad. I was thoroughly dissapointed. It should be noted that i saw these as dvd versions and watched them each 1 week apart. And i never read the books except the hobbit which was in like 6th grade. never cared to read the rest ofem
