Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Wow. The ads for this film look stunningly bad. I understand that it's a throwback to serial pulp scifi from way back when, but I am just floored with laughter every time I see the cheesy CGI or Angelina Jolie with an eyepatch(and, I swear to God, what looks like a moustache). I feel like this will be a bomb on the order of Reign of Fire, but if it receives even passable reviews I'll give it a shot; I really want it to be good.

I'm looking forward to it. I like the old serials, so it doesn't bother me.

Btw, there's been a thread on this already.

Man, you had to bring up Reign of Fire. That movie ticks me off. It had such a good premise, but it just fucked up. I call it the Resident Evil Syndrome. Kill off all or next to all of the cannon fodder in a stupid, boring way. BAH!

On topic, this movie looks very, erm, different. The building architecture and distinct uniforms seem to suggest that the movie takes place in an alternate universe where the Nazis won WW2. I'm almost positive of this, because I also caught a glimpse of a Ju-87 Stuka dogfighting one of those bird-like spacecraft in the preview. If anything, it'll be good to go and laugh at with the guys.

Something different. I have always enjoyed the serial pulp and have thus purchased several VHS tapes (such as Flash Gordon, Doctor Satan vs the Copperhead, and Commander Cody), so i would most likely see this when it comes out. Hopeful it would do better then League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (which started out good but quickly went down the drain).

But, I'd in the new previews on TV, I'd swear I'm seeing a british flag on the giant "air carriers" that seem to be dispatching little planes. So, what's up with that?
I'd like to think this is going to be good, but right now I'm VERY, very, iffy on it.

I AM seeing a giant British flag on the front of a four-downward bladed giant aircraft carrier thing. http://www.skycaptain.com/ for the trailer.

I may just see it because it looks so incredibly Crimson Skies-ish to me, and I love that game.

I have to see this - I grew up on the old 70's reprints of the 30's doc savage books- and still have a huge soft spot for the pulp genre- hope that it does not JTS like LXG

Damn, well I kind of liked reign of fire. Not the best movie I've ever seen but I didn't think it was bad either.

I think Sky Captain looks pretty good, I plan on seeing it. I've been waiting for a while now. I think the first previews came out either late last fall or early spring and it looked pretty good to me.

As far as cheesy CGIs, Spiderman and Hulk had some pretty cheesy ones. Too cartoonish looking but they were good movies.... well Spiderman was a good movie, Hulk was okay.

As long as it's not a big let down like the matrix sequals it should be an entertaining popcorn flick.

Reign of Fire isn't nearly as bad as everyone says. It does what it wants to do very well. Sky Captain has a really good idea, and I admit that huge airships basically give gaming dorks a boner, so I'm not really sure what to think about it. It looks really bad but really cool at the same time. The Angelina Jolie thing with an eyepatch REALLY makes me want to puke, so that's definitely a point off from my Seeing-It scale. We'll see what Ebert and Rotten Tomatoes gives it.

{Matrix Fan} It's my duty as a Matrix fan to say that I liked the Matrix sequels better than the original. Reloaded is my favorite movie of all time.{/Matrix Fan}

Well, even though it looks extremely corny and their trying to make the movie unique by having what look to be good graphics done in a retro way, I plan to see this movie; even if it is just to laugh at how stupid it is.(Hell, that's what I did with the new Exorcist movie, it sucked)

That's the first thing I thought when I seen the commercials and ads, my favorite game over Live too. The movie looks interesting enough for me to go see it...

i think its hard to advertise a movie that honors an old genre byputting it into a 2 minute preview. cant really grasp what they are tryin to do with it. ill definately be giving this one a chance, the cast is ok and im sure they can pull it off. it has to be tough though acting the whole movie on a huge green set ;P
