The Manchurian Candidate

Has anyone else seen it yet? I wasn't planning on seeing it, however a bunch of friends were going so I tagged along. All in all, I'd recomend checking it out if you like semi-disturbing, out-there films.

All in all, I don't think it's that good of a movie (well, I guess I just have a few questions about the story I need to have cleared up). Hoever, I liked it because it wasn't what I was expecting and was brave enough to be a little more disturbing than I think most films are recently.

Does anyone know why Spoiler: Denzel killed the vice-presedent? It seems like he didn't have to now that the FBI was aware of what was going on. And was the original crazy guy (at the begining of the film) murdered or did he drown naturally? I either missed it or it went unexplained.

Here's what I posted in the "rate the last film you saw" thread:

"I was semi-dragged into seeing this movie. I tend to stay away from Denzel Washington movies as of late seeing he's been used *so* many times. The movie was very interesting though. I guess I wasn't well informed, but it was totally different than what I expected, and I think this is generally the consensus for everyone as a few people even left early as they weren't expecting/couldn't take a semi-disturbing, intense film. I'd recomend seeing it, even if it's just because it's different than most blockbusters out these days."

Good Movie.
You seem a little schizophrenic about your recommendations.
Do you like it?
or do you not.

In my opinion, they improved Ocean's 11.

I agree... as much as I love the Rat Pack, I COULD NOT stay awake when watching the original.

Ever the Junky? I'll guess I'll take that as a comedic stunt...?

I didn't think the movie was that good, but I enjoyed seeing it, thus I recomend seeing it.

And by saying "original crazy guy," I was talking about the man that approached Denzel after he gave his speech to the Boy Scouts.

I was looking forward to this until I heard that they turned it into a politically charged election-year statement. The original had awful dialogue but was still entertaining when I saw it on PBS recently.

Spoilers:

Spoiler: They didn't really say about the guy from the beginning, the implication is that he was murdered though, since later on they talk about the mysterious circumstances regarding the rest of the unit's deaths.

And friends and I were arguing about why he killed him, some said he was still brainwashed and just completing his mission, others including myself thought that he was being a true friend and making sure that the VP would not be rebrainwashed and used again in the future, which was what the VP wanted given his actions.

Spoiler:
My thoughts on why the VP was killed. Marco said he and Shaw shared a connection that could not be taken away. When Shaw Missed his mark that basically threw off the brainwashing of Marco and that left him succeptable to new input. When Shaw was looking at Marco somehow they connected and Marco knew he had to kill the VP and his mother to ensure that Shaw would not be used by The Manchurian corp. for their bidding.

So your theory is a bit of a combination of the two, maybe if we weren't so busy arguing we coulda came up with that lol ;)

I foudn this movie slow and boring, and I generally love all movies.

This just didnt do it for me.

It would be a good book to read tho I think.

Wasnt the greatest movie Ive ever seen, but I too liked that it was rather disturbing. The flashbacks were utterly creepy, and not what I was expected. That was nice, but on a whole, the movie just didnt flow together as well as one would have hoped.

Cynthetiq 08-30-2004 07:58 PM

just watched it.... was entertaining.. i'll have to see the original.

Have not seen the original. It can only be better than the current version. On a scale of 1-10, I give this one a 3.5. And that's only because I am a fan of M.S. and D.W.

Exactly how I feel. I was psyched up for this movie when I heard about it, but after hearing more details I aws just let down. I'll probably see it eventually, but I'm no longer particularly motivated to do so.
