American Dad - New from the maker of Family Guy (video)

So Seth McFarlane has created a new TV show called American Dad. I think it's meant to start this fall.

It looks like a pretty much straight across copy of Family Guy, talking pet and all. I guess ripping yourself off is perfectly acceptable. The trailer is on this site, it almost got a chuckle out of me...but not quite. Well, let me know what you think.

May take me a bit to warm up to it. But I think it has some potential. Love that the voice actor for Brian from the Family Guy is doing Mr Smith's voice!

I think Seth MacFarlane, the show's creator, did a lot of voices on Family Guy: Peter Griffin/Brian Griffin/Stewie Griffin/Glen Quagmire/Tom Tucker/etc

Eh, Family Guy was a lot better. I didn't like the animation as much in this one.

Seth Green did Brian Griffin. And I don't see much of a point in doing a sping-off of Family Guy untill Family Guy has had a longer run (or untill it's killed by Fox Exec's again).

Hmmm... Didn't like this teaser much at all. It just seemed "forced" to me.

i dont know...that just wasnt visually pleasing to me. i didnt care for the character animation at all. the mom and boy just seem out of place in the animation style.

also, i didnt like the characters themselves. what's so funny about a german fish? why the fuck is their an alien? why the hell is the dad so political? i mean some of it was funny, but like someone else said....it seamed very forced.

Seth Green never did Brian Griffin. He only did Chris and Neil. You're thinking of Seth MacFarlane.

I chuckled at maybe one line in the whole trailer (when the fish saw the food and screamed "happy hour!"). But that was it.

I would be surprised if this is picked up by the networks. Certainly it's not going to get picked up by Fox....right?

Potential is there just wasn't as clean i.e. well put together as the Family Guy.

Just to be clear...

This is not the "new" Family Guy, right? It's another show entirely?

Jeez...you guys are a tough crowd to please. Give it time to grow into itself. Of course it looked forced. They're trying to fit as much they can into that one small clip. It'll smooth out. I kinda thought it was funny. No Family Guy...but funny in it's own light.

That's right. American Dad is due to start this fall, September or October of 2004.

Family Guy is due to return to Fox in January of 2005.

That's because Seth MacFarlane (the creator) is the one who voiced Brian. Although i'll admit it's a little vain to star in your own creations (a la Kevin Smith), he is still one hell of a voice actor, so I'll let it slide.

as an addendum, i watched the pilot. I understand that the pilot is designed to shove as much information about just what the show is going to be about into five minutes, so i'll forgive the fact that it seemed a bit much. i'd definitely give it a shot, if it came out of the same animation house that produced family guy, there's potential for greatness. given the choice between new family guy eps or this show, however, i'd gun for new family guy episodes first.

Yeah, not bad, not great. I'll wait til the show actually starts to make a full opinion about it. The alien is a bit stupid though.

One of the best parts of Family Guy though were all the cut aways. I wonder if they'll have any in this, I thought maybe because it was a pilot they didn't put any in. At the same time though, that may make it a bit TOO much like Family Guy.
