Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle

I just got to see this as a screener. It's directed by the same guy who did Dude, Where's My Car?

I have to say that it's very funny... between the stoner humor and the ethnic jokes. I enjoyed it.

Skogafoss and I dicussed the ethnic jokes and how PC it isn't.

Jesus Pimp 07-28-2004 07:48 PM

It looked pretty funny. I'll have to catch it when it comes out on dvd.

sadistikdreams 07-28-2004 08:19 PM

hehe. Fuckin stoners...
*points to mirror*
WHOA!

But um... Yeah. I like it. I'm gonna get fucked up and go see it my stoner pal.

Honestly, from the trailers, it looks a lot more subersive as far as it's jokes are concerned than one would expect from a movie like this.

Normally, jokes involving Asian or East Indian characters are on dimensional and as a result are lame.

It's different in this movie because the two main characters are, respectively, Korean and East Indian. The movie is told from their point of view.

So when, for instance, Harold's boss leaves work for the day telling a colleague "It's no problem these guys love crunching numbers" (or someting like that) I assume after telling Harold to work overtime, the camera pans up to reveal Harold standing at a window looking disgusted.

It's funny but also sharp and subersive. The comment Harold's boss makes is racist, yet it's a comment you here all too often in movies (in one way or another). Now, in the usual dumb comedy we wouldn't get the asian character's perspective leaving no chance for subversion of the stereotype. The character would be one note and either play against type or, worse yet, play into it.

It's almost as if we are seeing the world try to force Harold into a convenient stereotype and the movie, refreshingly, shows us what it feels like to be in that position. While making us laugh our asses off.

Okay. I'm now done giving my dissertation on the Harold & Kumar Trailer.

There will be a quiz :)

yes, there a point in time where Harold relucatantly under his breath calls himself a Twinkie, yellow on the outside and white on the inside. While there are stereotypes that pervade the movie, there are also common elements to everyone like bullies, shyness, parental/family/cultural stress.

BigDonkey2 08-01-2004 01:32 PM

anybody know where i can pick up that shirt that Kumar is wearing that says "I love Bush. The Pussy not the President" ???

Hey, I'm a Twinkie too! Should I go see this?

I went and saw this last night I thought it was pretty damn funny. Same kinda movie as "Dude Wheres my Car?" but I liked this one WAY better!!

Best line ever:

Freakshow: "... Who wants the first reach around?"

LMFAO!

that line alone ranks it much higher on my list, I hate most of the 'PC stuff' with a passion.

NoSoup 08-02-2004 08:47 AM

Best line in the movie

"Did Doogie Houser just steal my car?"

"NPH? He wouldnt do that." !!! hahahaha

jizzmasterp 08-03-2004 08:20 PM

Haorld and Kumar rocked. EXTREEEEEME!

roofles 08-03-2004 08:37 PM

Definitely funny. Not as intelligent as rotten tomatoes made me think it was, but I still didn't feel like some one jacked my $8.50.

Moskie 08-08-2004 06:34 PM

very, very funny.

Have to add my favorite quote: "Shotgun, anal!"

Jadey 08-11-2004 12:30 AM

I saw this with my gf this weekend and we both walked out of the theatre and said "that was alot better than I thought it'd be". I thought it was hilarious!

KellyC 08-13-2004 01:15 AM

I'm impressed that the director of "Dude, where's my car?" can make such a good movie. I thought it would suck ass just like "Dude, Where's my car?" I was wrong. Everything about this movie is just perfect, 'cept that redneck "freakshow" guy...his "fugly-ness" creeps me out....

Stompy 12-28-2004 12:25 PM

Holy shit, how did this movie NOT get a tremendous amount of marketing/coverage?!

This is easily one of the funniest movies I've ever seen...

"Just thinkin about biting into one of those tasty white castle burgers... just makes me wanna burn this muthafucka down."

...and when Kumar is pissing into the Bush and this FUCKING GUY just comes up out of nowhere and pisses right next to him.

Kumar: "Uh.. why are you pee-"
Guy: "HMM?"

Crazy!

K-Wise 12-28-2004 04:35 PM

Dont know if its true, but i read on angryasianman.com that they will make the sequel depending on how well the dvd sales go. Harold and Kumar go to Amsterdam. I kinda figured they would make a sequel, being how the movie ended. Everyone go out and buy/rent it please!

Stompy 01-02-2005 08:55 PM

I've watched this about 8 times in the past week, hahaha. It's a classic!!
