Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...tar_wars_title

Quote:

SAN DIEGO - The final "Star Wars" prequel is just "Episode III" no more. Lucasfilm announced its new title Saturday: "Revenge of the Sith."

The movie, set for release in May 2005, will link the prequels with the original "Star Wars" trilogy by showing how Luke Skywalker's father, Anakin, went from a sweet-natured slave boy to the galaxy-crushing villain Darth Vader. The Sith is the evil sect that corrupts Anakin (played by Hayden Christensen (news)) by drawing him into the dark side of the Force, the cosmic power that balances the universe.

Lucasfilm announced the new title at the annual Comic-Con International, the annual gathering of tens of thousands of sci-fi and superhero fans.

It was a risky move — some of the notoriously fickle "Star Wars" admirers initially bristled at previous prequel titles "The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones."

"Star Wars" creator and filmmaker George Lucas did not attend the event, but sent fan relations chief Steve Sansweet in his place.

Sansweet announced the title by pulling off a baseball jersey to reveal a black T-shirt emblazoned with "Revenge of the Sith."

"For some time now, the naming of a new 'Star Wars' movie has taken on some special meaning among core fans who love to take part in guessing games and speculation before a title is announced," Sansweet told nearly 6,500 convention attendees. "And then (they) engage in debate once it is ... so let the debate begin."

Minutes later, a sampling of audience members dressed as Jedis, stormtroopers and other "Star Wars" characters showed they approved.

"I thought it was great, I loved it,' said Barren Wright, 35, a graphic designer from Modesto who was dressed as the green-armored bounty hunter Boba Fett. "This takes it back to the classic trilogy, It's a smart move by Lucasfilm to tie it all together since the logo and everything is identical to 'Return of the Jedi.'"

Wright said the symmetry between the titles reflects the story lines.

Anyone who has seen the original "Star Wars" from 1977 knows that the good guys — that is the Jedi — would be wiped out by Darth Vader in "Episode III" just as Vader and his evil Empire were toppled in 1983's "Return of the Jedi."

In addition to the title, Lucasfilm also sent concept artist Ryan Church to show off drawings of a Wookie tree civilization from "Episode III" and played footage of Christensen's climactic light-saber duel — minus all the special effects — with co-star Ewan McGregor, who plays Obi-Wan Kenobi.

"Return of the Jedi" was originally to be titled "Revenge of the Jedi." Some advance promotional material even featured that title, but Lucas changed it later in production.

"This time, George tells us he's going to keep 'Revenge' in the title," Sansweet said.

He had one other announcement for fans: "Revenge of the Sith" T-shirts would go on sale inside Comic-Con's main hall in five minutes.

Sounds pretty lame to me. Then again, anything less than "Episode III: Schindler's List" would probably sound lame to me :(

There is too high of an expectation of this movie for me to really enjoy it.

Who on earth dresses up to a name unveiling? Premiere surely, but this is just too far. The fact that it ties in with Return of the Jedi just makes it seem lamer and more contrived.

I think the Star Wars movies are highly overrated anyway. Sure, I liked them a lot when I was a kid, but watching it now, it just doesn't hold the same appeal to me. I have yet to see Episode 1 and Episode 2 was pretty crappy. I may or may not go see this one, but I definately am not holding my breath. If it's any good then it'll be a pleasant surprise.

Ace_O_Spades 07-24-2004 06:19 PM

im one of the few people who actually liked Episode I

I don't mind the name, but Lucas used special effects as a crutch to allow Episode 2 to limp along to mediocrity... Let's see if he does it again

I have low hopes for 3

bltzkriegmcanon 07-24-2004 07:37 PM

I liked all of them, I just sympathize with the creators of the film for not being able to live up to impossible expectations/hype. I admit, there were some cringeworthy parts in Episode II, and some actor issues in Episode I, but, overall, both were really good movies. I liked 'em. Episode III, for me, seems to be the redeemer for the series.

Fremen 07-24-2004 08:37 PM

Pretty damn cool news in this fans' mind...

HugAPug 07-24-2004 09:26 PM

As a fan, I think it's an awesome name. Makes me think about how cool-sounding Revenge of the Jedi would have been.

Mr.Deflok 07-24-2004 09:41 PM

Hells yes.

It's the perfect title, mirrors ROTJ and distinguishes the difference between the Sith and the Jedi, Revenge and Return.

Fantastic news, please don't let this thread turn into a "oh my god lucas raped my childhood 'cause i didn't like episode 1 and episode 2 omg lame greedo shot first."

I'm pretty hyped up for the next sequel, Star Wars is my favourite saga, gonna be sad when it's all over.

I completely agree. Except I think Ep II was better than Ep I.

ironchefkorea 07-24-2004 11:35 PM

I think 'Rise of the Empire' would have been a lot cooler. Or something to that effect. But it could have been a lot worse than it is. Now we'll just have to see what the actual movie is like.

Stare At The Sun 07-24-2004 11:57 PM

Episode one was awful.
Episode two wasn't quite as bad, but still had very few good points, other than nice effects.
Episode three I'm hoping for a decent movie.

Otherwise, i'll stick to my original trilogy.

whenever I see a thread titled with Star Wars I always know that it's going to degenerate into what you said...

i'm going to enjoy it for what it's worth.

I agree. I loved Episode 1. Good acting (except for a few, you know who they are...ok, fine, Anakin sucked), good CGI, a good plot...it had everything that a Star Wars movie needed to do great. It had a few flaws that kept it from being a masterpiece (the aformentioned acting issues, even though a majority of the film's actors were superb). I wish Liam Neeson could have been in the last two movies as well. He really made Episode 1 a very good movie.

Episode 2? AHH! I hated it. The acting was very bad at some parts (even though a lot of the actors did good with what they had), but the worst part about 2 was the fucking script. Did they get sixth graders to write it? Where the hell was George Lucas' editor? They had the actors for the movie, they had the time and money as well. What they DIDN'T have was a good script. I wish I could go back in time and tell George to get a damn editor.

I have really low hopes for Episode 3. If it's anything like the first trilogy or anything like Episode 1 then I'll be happy. I simply hope it's not a CGI-fest with a poor script like Episode 2.

Oh, and I like the title as well!

Jadedfox 07-25-2004 08:37 AM

I can't wait for it to come out. And believe it or not Episode 1&2 are growing on me and I do enjoy them both now.

I like the title too :)

Lots of people dress up to go to Comic-Con; they have a costume competition every year.

I sense a great disturbance in the force as if millions of people cried out in anger in how long it will be till they can actualy see the next StarWars movie,

Episode III: Fuck you I'm rich and I'm putting in a transvestite serial killing Wookie as Chewbacca's distant cousin and making Obi Wan do a song and dance number...

Die George... just die...

Not watching it...

K-Wise 07-25-2004 07:44 PM

i think its a good name.

and you have to admit, despite whatever it was you felt about the last two films (I & II), its always a special feeling to see that Star Wars openning with the text rolling up the screen.

i hope its a fantastic film. and i hope its an international release (ie, opens in Australia same time as the States) because i hate it when you see threads pop up in Tilted Entertainment about films you want to see, but still have to wait a month or two.

Kostya 07-26-2004 05:10 AM

When in Rome, act as the Romans do...

When in a Star Wars thread, complain...

Kadath 07-26-2004 05:23 AM

I want to finally see Ewan McGregor throw Hayden's ass into a volcano. I've been hearing that rumor since I was about 8 years old, and I'm ready for it to come around. You know what? That could be the whole movie for me. Title screen, shot of Mcgregor hoisting Christensen up and hurling him bodily into the gaping fire-rimmed mouth of an active fumarole, end credits.

absorbentishe 07-26-2004 05:23 AM

All my complaint is that it's taken too long for this to come out. Should have been out this year, but noooooo. Names okay with me though.

FaderMonkey 07-26-2004 07:18 AM

I don't get it. Revenge of the Sith??? Revenge for what?!? Yeah, their plans in Episodes 1 and 2 were kinda foiled....kinda....but not really. The Sith were still slowly taking over. I don't think the name makes sense. I agree that something like 'Rise of the Empire' would have been much better.

quadro2000 07-26-2004 09:08 AM

It's a great title, and I love how it mirrors the Jedi logo.

It will never live up to everyone's expectations. So all the bitching in here about how the movie is going to suck is actually a positive thing, isn't it? Maybe you'll see it and be surprised if it doesn't suck 100%.

The first Star Wars came out in 1977. Second in 1980. Third in 1983.

Episode 1 came out in 1999. Episode 2 came out in 2002. Episode 3 comes out in 2005.

Star Wars movies have always been seperated by a three year period. The wait is normal, even though it does seem forever sometimes. I remember that the wait for Episode 2 seemed an eternity!

Revenge for their defeat and near annihilation by the Jedi in the great Sith-Jedi wars that happened a few millennia back.

Or so I've read. :)

That makes sense. Is that brought up at all though in Episode 1 or 2? I guess it probably was at some point and I just don't remember. I try to forget Episodes 1 and 2 as much as I can.

ironchefkorea 07-26-2004 01:28 PM

are these the wars that happened before the mandalorian wars, when the Sith were an actual race?

I remember this whole issue back in the day over why Ep. VI wasn't called "Revenge of the Jedi", something along the lines that a Jedi wouldn't take revenge or something like that.

Fader, I don't remember if they were mentioned in them for sure, but it seems like Qui-Gon Jinn did tell Obi-Wan about the Sith and the war when they first meet Darth Maul.

Most of the things I remember about the war was stuff I read in the Expanded Universe novels and the Star Wars Encyclopedia. My memory is notoriously bad so I can't give any details. I do know some of the stories involved the Jedi Holocron cubes. (devices used by the Jedi to record their history and lessons.)

ironchef, according to this lo-o-o-ng explanation, they were after the Mandalorian Wars.
(I didn't quote it because it was way too long, and basically off topic.) ;)

BSW4 = Before Star Wars IV (I believe)

Speed_Gibson 07-26-2004 11:37 PM

This qualifies as DVD rental to me so far and that is unlikely to change after watching the first two in theatres. Ranks up there with Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill Vol. 2 as 'might watch someday when it costs $.99 for a five day rental and the odd mood strikes me'.

SecretMethod70 07-27-2004 02:33 AM

um...dude...Pulp Fiction ROCKS - are you on crack? :p

Anyway, this thread gave me an idea for the next Star Wars video game. How sweet would it be to play a game of the Sith-Jedi wars where you can choose to play as a Jedi or as a Sith? :D

K-Wise 07-27-2004 02:56 AM

I thought they already had a game out like that.

Asta!!

SecretMethod70 07-27-2004 03:10 AM

heh, maybe they do - can't say I've played most of them.

Derwood 07-27-2004 05:07 AM

The game "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" takes place 4000 years before Episode 1, and the Sith-Jedi Wars are already over (I think). The Sith are more of a militant faction than a race at that point. The Mandalorian wars were very recently concluded at the start of KOTOR

bltzkriegmcanon 07-27-2004 05:07 AM

Knights of The Old Republic offers that opportunity. Damn good RPG. If you haven't played it and have an Xbox (that seems almost impossible!:)) then I would suggest picking it up. IMMEDIATELY. Same thing for the PC version, but only if you have a current or within 1 year of current generation computer.

EDIT: Damn! Derwood posted approximately .00000000001 seconds before I did! Oh well. He's correct though, KOTOR takes place after the Jedi-Sith war of Exar Kun. Damn good game though.

kutulu 07-27-2004 08:55 AM

I'll see it but my expectations will be low. Ep I was pretty good, II was below average, hopefully III won't follwo that trendline.

Stompy 07-31-2004 10:54 AM

Darth Vader (Who Gives A Sith)

Darth Vader
Maybe not now but sometime later
You're very phallic
You're big, black and metallic
Only you could be so bold
Lord Vader
Fuckin' shit up with your light saber
You re but the learner
But now you re very much gayer
I sence a disturbance in my ass
Darth Vader

(Courtesy of MSI)

In all seriousness, the new movies aren't all that bad.

One of the arguments that I die laughing at is the "the acting is horrible." Yeah, you remember the first 3 Star Wars movies? Acting wasn't go grand in that either. Mark Hamill couldn't act his way out of a paper sack at times in Ep 4.

The reason people think these movies are bad is because it's all in your head. The original Star Wars was beyond anything that was done in movies before while the newer ones are filled with CGI that was used way back in '92 with Jurassic Park.

That and you're no longer a kid. Adults probably though that the things you liked as a kid were just flat out stupid.. movies, toys, whatever. Ep 4-6 had a good story, but if it had started at Ep 1-3, it would've been boring as hell. You're not introduced to Darth Vader, or Luke Skywalker. There's a reason he released 4-6 first.

The first 3 movies serve merely to tell what happened before the original trilogy. The "wow" factor is long gone. You already know the story, you already know what happens, so just sit back, relax, watch the movies and take them for what they're worth.

Think of it this way... if someone tells you how a movie ends and you pretty much know everything that happens before you even see it, there won't be anything to make you doodie in your pants with excitement; you already know everything that happened.
