Rescue Me
I was excited about this series because I like Leary and I was a big fan of The Job before it was cancelled. I watched the premiere last night.
It's really quite a good show, though I can see people getting offended at the abundance of racist/sexist/homophobic opinions in the show -- these are supposed to be regular blue collar NY firefighters, so they are rather stereotypical tough guys, and don't take offense at being called mick or wop or spic. Leary is pretty good, although not out of typical form. I look forward to future episodes. There's a good deal of language and other offensive stuff; FX seems willing to push the envelope for the purpose of effective TV. Give it a shot, it's decent TV, which is saying something. Edit: I misspelled wop.

That show is hilarious. I don't know if you guys caught tonights show, but Leary's line about the Marlboro Man knocked me out of my chair, I laughed so hard. If you are easily offended, stick to ABC shows, don't come to the FX channel. Between this show and Nip/Tuck, I don't know how they don't get shut down, but I'm glad they don't.

I enjoy it. Not one of my favorites, but on my "try to watch but not upset if missed" list with Nip/Tuck and a bunch of others.
Denis Leary is a funny guy, even on a serious show. Although I think the fact that he has been in about five different graphic sex scenes so far may have scarred me for life...

For what it's worth, a relative of mine is a longtime firefighter, not in NYC, but in a city on the east coast, and he says that the way the characters act on the show is a pretty accurate description of some of the stuff that goes on. He recommended I watch this show. I've only caught one episode, but it seems well done.

y' know, I thought that this show would be cool. but then I caught an episode. and while I like Leary, I thought that him talking and seeing his dead cousin was just too much like something else on tv.

the season finale is in a few days and i've enjoyed what i've gotten to see. the've phazed out a lot of the sixth sense ghost baloney that didn't really fit w/ the show and have had some really funny storylines that fill a huge portion of the show. anybody know the name of the band that sings the theme song ?

The season ender was pretty insane. Denis Leary is a fantastic actor! Who knew? It's more than him just being good at looking drunk...he can actually convey emotion and is believable as a FDNY firefighter. I can't wait for next season.

great
This show is seriously great and one of my top 3 picks to watch - and I am a very picky TV person..
Rescue Me has a great story line, good music backdrops, and great actors. The show is raw, in your face, and gritty. Makes me want to become a firefighter to fulfill that boyhood dream. I missed the final episode last night though! I hope they replay it sometime this week. |

Thing is I was never a Leary fan so much. Some of his stand up is not too bad, but damn... We get it... You like to smoke... But Rescue Me IMHO is the best show on TV these days. It is profane, funny and dramatic at the same time. The cast works well together and I think the addition of Tatum O'Neal as Tommy's sister is going to be great.

Great episode, thought his relationship with his wife reminds me of my boss....ugh I hate me job. Neeways, still some of the best acting and writing on TV, I'd say it's one of my top 3 series on TV right now, behind Nip/Tuck, and Battlestar Galactica. Who would have guessed that reality TV would have lead to a backlash of unparalleled writing and acting?

I like this show a lot. Leary is damn good. For that matter, the whole cast is pretty damn good. I kind of like the dead cousin stuff. I can imagine a guy who has seen the shit Tommy's seen is going to be carrying the dead around with him, yeah?
The final 2 two or three shows were just so crazy last season...I'm anxious to see the season premiere.

I'm just glad the show is funny again. Last season had me about ready to kill myself, it was so damn depressing. Everytime ya turned around someone was either getting killed, going crazy, poppin pills, or getting the shit kicked out of them. After watching the first episode of the season, it looks like this one could be a doozy too, but hopefully they spread the laughs out a little this time.

I love this show too. Watched the first season on DVD a while back and then watched the whole 2nd season on DVD a couple of weeks ago, so I was ready for the season premiere.
My one semi-beef with the show: The acting of the guy that plays Tommy's brother (Dean Winters) bothers me for some reason. It just seems really forced a lot of the time. I liked him on HBO's Oz as Ryan O'Reilly, but I'm just not the biggest fan of him on this show. The season premiere wasn't bad, but wasn't all that great. I agree about Tatum O'Neal. I'm glad that her character looks like it's being expanded from the small role it played last season. I've always had a thing for her. Something about the way she looks coupled with that voice (I even had a crush on her in The Bad News Bears when I was a kid). She's a good actress too. Glad to see she might be making somewhat of a comeback in acting. By the way, this just occurred to me during the season premiere last night: I wonder if they'll end up killing off one of the main guys on the crew this season. It's obviously a dangerous job and I'm surprised no one on the crew has bitten the dust since the first couple of episodes of season 1 (some guy who was briefly on the show) as far as I can remember.

Holy shit.
Tonight's episode seemed kind of slow, but that ending... Damn. I thought this thing Spoiler: with Tommy's brother banging his wife but man it came to a head quickly. And I have a feeling we've not seen the end of it. And who wants to bet that before too long (next season perhaps), some young firefighter takes a shine to Tommy's daughter.

Tommy's problems at the sperm bank are pretty low-hanging fruit, but they deliver them pretty well. Spoiler: Tommy raping his ex-wife is the one of the most disturbing things I've seen on television.

I thought it disturbing too. I'm not usually one to get up in that "message they send by showing that on TV" business. But what Tommy did as well as her reaction to it was borderline.

I watched last week from tape and then the new one tonight. Garrity's sleepwalking incident generated some laughs, but fuck, Spoiler: Sheila is Fatal Attraction style. I think Janet's comment about turnabout being fair play was rather better illustrated in Sheila raping Tommy. Did she slip him Viagra leading to his prolonged erection with Angie?. I am beginning to think Denis Leary's sole motivation in his writing for the show is to have sex scenes with as many women as possible.

DUDE HOLY CRAP!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!! I've gotta tell you, that was a great episode. Spoiler: Sheila is out of her mind. Though now that I think about it I wish my wife did stuff like that. Really throw a different dynamic in the mix.

Spoiler: You wish that your wife would stalk and secretly drug you, have sex with your unconscious body, then wreck your home and make you think you had fallen off the wagon, wracking you with guilt and self-doubt? Yeah, that really would be a different dynamic. One that would call for IMMEDIATE DIVORCE!

Holy hell, the entire cast has gone nuts. There isn't one character left in that show who shouldn't be in a little rubber room. And I love every minute of it.
And in Leary's defense, if I was writing for a show swamped with hot women, I'd probably write in as many sex scenes for myself as the producers would let me get away with. After a depressing season last year, he deserves all the romping he can handle. |
