Rescue Me

I was excited about this series because I like Leary and I was a big fan of The Job before it was cancelled. I watched the premiere last night.
It's really quite a good show, though I can see people getting offended at the abundance of racist/sexist/homophobic opinions in the show -- these are supposed to be regular blue collar NY firefighters, so they are rather stereotypical tough guys, and don't take offense at being called mick or wop or spic. Leary is pretty good, although not out of typical form. I look forward to future episodes. There's a good deal of language and other offensive stuff; FX seems willing to push the envelope for the purpose of effective TV. Give it a shot, it's decent TV, which is saying something.

Edit: I misspelled wop. :o

Polyphobic 07-22-2004 09:30 AM

Damn! I missed it.

It seems that a majority of decent/good shows appear on basic cable channels. Is that because the big networks are unable or unwilling to try shows with any risk?

m0rpheus 09-29-2004 04:10 PM

Looks like it could be damn good from the first episode. Hopefully it a) keeps up this caliber of show and b) gets the chance to.

Nikilidstrom 09-29-2004 08:23 PM

That show is hilarious. I don't know if you guys caught tonights show, but Leary's line about the Marlboro Man knocked me out of my chair, I laughed so hard. If you are easily offended, stick to ABC shows, don't come to the FX channel. Between this show and Nip/Tuck, I don't know how they don't get shut down, but I'm glad they don't.

djtestudo 09-29-2004 08:45 PM

I enjoy it. Not one of my favorites, but on my "try to watch but not upset if missed" list with Nip/Tuck and a bunch of others.

Denis Leary is a funny guy, even on a serious show. Although I think the fact that he has been in about five different graphic sex scenes so far may have scarred me for life...

bond007 09-30-2004 07:59 AM

the show is very entertaining...

and I wanna see Diane Farr (Laura) naked!

Vales419 09-30-2004 10:15 AM

The show is very awesome. Great story, great action. I am just hoping it will last more than two seasons.

V.

goddfather40 10-02-2004 08:50 PM

For what it's worth, a relative of mine is a longtime firefighter, not in NYC, but in a city on the east coast, and he says that the way the characters act on the show is a pretty accurate description of some of the stuff that goes on. He recommended I watch this show. I've only caught one episode, but it seems well done.

moonstrucksoul 10-05-2004 06:56 AM

y' know, I thought that this show would be cool. but then I caught an episode. and while I like Leary, I thought that him talking and seeing his dead cousin was just too much like something else on tv.

warrrreagl 10-05-2004 08:35 AM

Now I've got Fontella Bass echoing in my head ...

high_jinx 10-11-2004 04:41 AM

the season finale is in a few days and i've enjoyed what i've gotten to see. the've phazed out a lot of the sixth sense ghost baloney that didn't really fit w/ the show and have had some really funny storylines that fill a huge portion of the show. anybody know the name of the band that sings the theme song ?

tom12 10-13-2004 07:34 PM

i really like the episodes ive seen so far, leary is one of my faves

tom12 10-13-2004 07:37 PM

i think the song is by the von bondies and is called "c'mon c'mon"

Willravel 10-13-2004 10:03 PM

The season ender was pretty insane. Denis Leary is a fantastic actor! Who knew? It's more than him just being good at looking drunk...he can actually convey emotion and is believable as a FDNY firefighter. I can't wait for next season.

mused76 10-14-2004 07:05 PM

great

This show is seriously great and one of my top 3 picks to watch - and I am a very picky TV person..
Rescue Me has a great story line, good music backdrops, and great actors. The show is raw, in your face, and gritty. Makes me want to become a firefighter to fulfill that boyhood dream. I missed the final episode last night though! I hope they replay it sometime this week.

high_jinx 10-15-2004 04:14 PM

i think they usually replay it on sun. nite.

pcockren 10-15-2004 05:09 PM

They are going to replay it tonight at 11:00...I can't wait to see it...I'm pissed I missed it on Wed. cause everyone at work has been talking about how good it was...

Started season 3 tonight. Not as good as I had hoped for, but I expect it will pick up steam soon.

Thing is I was never a Leary fan so much. Some of his stand up is not too bad, but damn... We get it... You like to smoke... But Rescue Me IMHO is the best show on TV these days. It is profane, funny and dramatic at the same time. The cast works well together and I think the addition of Tatum O'Neal as Tommy's sister is going to be great.

Willravel 05-30-2006 08:22 PM

Great episode, thought his relationship with his wife reminds me of my boss....ugh I hate me job. Neeways, still some of the best acting and writing on TV, I'd say it's one of my top 3 series on TV right now, behind Nip/Tuck, and Battlestar Galactica. Who would have guessed that reality TV would have lead to a backlash of unparalleled writing and acting?

Roark 05-31-2006 02:53 AM

It was a good beginning for sure. I definitely think he'll be hooking up with that science teacher. The end where his brother was doing is ex-wife... priceless

guthmund 05-31-2006 06:08 AM

I like this show a lot. Leary is damn good. For that matter, the whole cast is pretty damn good. I kind of like the dead cousin stuff. I can imagine a guy who has seen the shit Tommy's seen is going to be carrying the dead around with him, yeah?

The final 2 two or three shows were just so crazy last season...I'm anxious to see the season premiere.

Nikilidstrom 05-31-2006 07:15 AM

I'm just glad the show is funny again. Last season had me about ready to kill myself, it was so damn depressing. Everytime ya turned around someone was either getting killed, going crazy, poppin pills, or getting the shit kicked out of them. After watching the first episode of the season, it looks like this one could be a doozy too, but hopefully they spread the laughs out a little this time.

Booray 05-31-2006 02:46 PM

I love this show too. Watched the first season on DVD a while back and then watched the whole 2nd season on DVD a couple of weeks ago, so I was ready for the season premiere.

My one semi-beef with the show:
The acting of the guy that plays Tommy's brother (Dean Winters) bothers me for some reason. It just seems really forced a lot of the time. I liked him on HBO's Oz as Ryan O'Reilly, but I'm just not the biggest fan of him on this show.

The season premiere wasn't bad, but wasn't all that great. I agree about Tatum O'Neal. I'm glad that her character looks like it's being expanded from the small role it played last season. I've always had a thing for her. Something about the way she looks coupled with that voice (I even had a crush on her in The Bad News Bears when I was a kid). She's a good actress too. Glad to see she might be making somewhat of a comeback in acting.

By the way, this just occurred to me during the season premiere last night:
I wonder if they'll end up killing off one of the main guys on the crew this season. It's obviously a dangerous job and I'm surprised no one on the crew has bitten the dust since the first couple of episodes of season 1 (some guy who was briefly on the show) as far as I can remember.

Exactly what I did. I normally wouldn't have gave the show a chance, but my son brought the first season DVD set home with him at Christmas. He wanted us to watch it sure that we would like it. And he was right. Later I researched to see when season two would start and found that I already missed it. Netflix to the rescue and season two was caught up on before last night's new episode. In retrospect, I think maybe my letdown over last night's episode was that I didn't get to watch two or three more after like I did on DVD.

abbaker987 06-06-2006 12:43 AM

This show is great. I've never been so entertained and disturbed at the same time. It creeped me out when you saw his dead son sitting next to him at the breakfast table eating cereal.

It does make you wonder if that is just how Tommy deals with loss, or is he really just crazy? It seemed to me he was a little too OK at the start of this season after just losing his only son.

Psycho Dad 06-06-2006 07:07 PM

Holy shit.

Tonight's episode seemed kind of slow, but that ending... Damn. I thought this thing Spoiler: with Tommy's brother banging his wife but man it came to a head quickly. And I have a feeling we've not seen the end of it. And who wants to bet that before too long (next season perhaps), some young firefighter takes a shine to Tommy's daughter.

abbaker987 06-10-2006 01:32 PM

The second episode of the new season was great. That ending was nuts. I can't wait to see what happens to the guy who is sleeping with Tommy's sister.

abbaker987 06-12-2006 10:37 PM

Anybody seen the comedy short they did.

http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/rescueme/

Click on videos at the bottom and then click where it says All New Comedy Short at the top. It's about 10 min. and best with high speed internet. It's hilarious.

Psycho Dad 06-13-2006 03:47 AM

I've tried a few times but Mozilla and the video didn't play nicely. I'll try in Internet Exploder tonight.

Nikilidstrom 06-14-2006 07:33 AM

Wow, the probie's gay?! Call me crazy, but I didn't see that coming. Looks like its gonna be his last season, especially with him convinced he needs to make the transfer out of state.

yeah, I saw that a few weeks before the premiere. Hilarious!

That was freakin hilarious. I also thought for sure that Tommy had finally snapped at the end there, but apparently from Janet's reaction, he knew exactly what he was doing.

Kadath 06-26-2006 05:28 PM

Tommy's problems at the sperm bank are pretty low-hanging fruit, but they deliver them pretty well. Spoiler: Tommy raping his ex-wife is the one of the most disturbing things I've seen on television.

Psycho Dad 06-26-2006 05:58 PM

I thought it disturbing too. I'm not usually one to get up in that "message they send by showing that on TV" business. But what Tommy did as well as her reaction to it was borderline.

Kadath 07-18-2006 07:13 PM

I watched last week from tape and then the new one tonight. Garrity's sleepwalking incident generated some laughs, but fuck, Spoiler: Sheila is Fatal Attraction style. I think Janet's comment about turnabout being fair play was rather better illustrated in Sheila raping Tommy. Did she slip him Viagra leading to his prolonged erection with Angie?. I am beginning to think Denis Leary's sole motivation in his writing for the show is to have sex scenes with as many women as possible. :)

Willravel 07-18-2006 08:01 PM

DUDE HOLY CRAP!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!! I've gotta tell you, that was a great episode. Spoiler: Sheila is out of her mind. Though now that I think about it I wish my wife did stuff like that. Really throw a different dynamic in the mix.

Kadath 07-19-2006 04:31 AM

Spoiler: You wish that your wife would stalk and secretly drug you, have sex with your unconscious body, then wreck your home and make you think you had fallen off the wagon, wracking you with guilt and self-doubt? Yeah, that really would be a different dynamic. One that would call for IMMEDIATE DIVORCE!

Nikilidstrom 07-19-2006 12:23 PM

Holy hell, the entire cast has gone nuts. There isn't one character left in that show who shouldn't be in a little rubber room. And I love every minute of it.

And in Leary's defense, if I was writing for a show swamped with hot women, I'd probably write in as many sex scenes for myself as the producers would let me get away with. After a depressing season last year, he deserves all the romping he can handle.

Psycho Dad 07-19-2006 04:11 PM

But it seems Leary's character has never taken his pants off to get any of the action he sees. And doesn't it seem that all the scenes never last any longer than the ones where he was getting off too quick with the teacher?

Booray 07-20-2006 05:11 AM

Anyone know what's up with Charles Durning? They keep mentioning his character (Tommy's father) but they never show him. I miss him on the show. I hope he was just taking time off from the show to do a movie or to just have time off or something. I hope it wasn't because he was sick or anything. He turned 83 earlier this year, so illnesses wouldn't bode well for his long-term health.

biznatch 07-26-2006 10:59 AM

I'm so confused..all the women in that series look alike... especially those two brunettes.
but I still love it. Leary keeps surprising me with his acting skills. He apparently is really passionate about firefighters, so I guess that explains his efforts.

Psycho Dad 07-26-2006 04:28 PM

Marisa Tomei is far hotter than any of the other women on that show to be confused with them IMHO.

Kadath 07-26-2006 07:29 PM

Booray: It looks like he's going to be in next week's episode. He looks quite haggard in the previews.

I was watching last night's episode with my sister and we were trying to figure out if any of the characters weren't terribly screwed up in some way. We couldn't thing of one.

Psycho Dad 07-26-2006 07:35 PM

Franco doesn't seem that assed up.

Nikilidstrom 07-27-2006 07:22 AM

He may not be personally messed up anymore, after getting his pill addiction figured out, but the situation he is in with his daughter being essentially kidnapped is definitely FUBAR.

And it looks like Leary finally got sick of banging every female on the show, as it looks like he pretty much blew it last episode with all the regulars.

Kadath 08-02-2006 05:09 AM

I'm still tremendously nervous about Sheila's motivations. Spoiler: Does it seem obvious to anyone else that Tommy wants to give her widow money to Stack and his wife? After I went to bed I was thinking about the bombshell that Tommy's brother dropped on him and I realized something that should have been obvious right away: Spoiler: the kid could be Tommy's. The scene where the house deals with Probie's homosexuality was probably pretty true to life, but still sad.

Nikilidstrom 08-02-2006 07:36 AM

I'm not sure Sheila's motivation is anything but desperation, trying to cling to whats left of her dead husbands memory. I think you are right on about Tommy's intentions though. As for the big news from his bro, I saw that coming a mile away, and figured that was the only reason she was having sex with Tommy in the first place, and a couple comments during next weeks previews kinda helped convince me.

Psycho Dad 08-02-2006 05:53 PM

My dvd recorder stopped right after Franco sat down to play checkers with his new gf's brother. What did I miss?

Kadath 08-03-2006 05:26 AM

We could tell you, but it's on again tomorrow at 11 PM and Sunday at 10 PM; you could record it then and get the full enjoyment.

Psycho Dad 08-05-2006 04:21 PM

I didn't think I would have missed that much, but I was wrong. Quite a little bit went on after my recorder stopped.

Kadath 08-05-2006 07:13 PM

Glad you got to watch the whole thing. Spoiler: The scene where the brother swallows the checker was pretty hilarious.
Nikilidstrom: are you saying that Spoiler: She knew she was pregnant and started having sex with Tommy to put the question in his mind as to whether the kid was his or not, or that she started to have sex with him in order to have his baby?

Nikilidstrom 08-06-2006 05:53 AM

The second one, Kadath.

biznatch 08-08-2006 06:45 PM

"Sweetheart, this is way way more bad boy than you're ever gonna be able to handle. So do yourself a favor."
"What?"
"Go blow a drummer."

Effing genius.

Kadath 08-08-2006 07:00 PM

Man, I miss when this show was upbeat for like three episodes. This shit is so fucking dark. Spoiler: Tommy telling Stack to give up and die for the good of his family and then walking out casually when he does...Jesus.

biznatch 08-08-2006 07:02 PM

Who is the burned guy in the hospital??
Also, do you guys have any ideas on how I can see last week's episode?

Nikilidstrom 08-09-2006 07:41 AM

The burned guy is Tommy's buddy Stack, from another firehouse. A few episodes ago the two houses were fighting a large fire together and a wall or ceiling collapsed on Stack, trapping him and setting him on fire, until Probie pulled him out. That is the same time that Tommy figured out that maybe Probie had some potential and did not want him to transfer to another house.

And from the previews of the last few episodes of the season, it looks like it just gonna keep getting darker, too.

Kadath 08-15-2006 07:02 PM

Spoiler: I was glad to see that son of a bitch Johnny get it. Fuck him. But it sucks to lose the chief. And Sheila still freaks me out.

Psycho Dad 08-15-2006 07:48 PM

That' what I like about this show. The two things you mentioned would have been season ending cliffhangers for most writers. Here we're going to get to enjoy some more twists to it I'm sure next week as well as who knows what else. I'm glad I didn't get let down by Rescue Me like I was The Sopranos last season.

biznatch 08-15-2006 09:40 PM

yeah, this is definitely the one show I plan my tuesdays around for. And I was even able to catch it on time this week, and wasn't dissapointed at all... The nun scene is hilarious, whoever writes the script is a suicidal comic genius.

Psycho Dad 08-22-2006 07:07 PM

Spoiler: Man... I can't believe that given ten minutes with that wortless cuntstain Tommy didn't go apeshit on him. About the only reason I'm not looking forward to next week's episode is I don't want to wait until next season. This show doesn't do anything except get better every week.

Moskie 08-22-2006 08:19 PM

my DVR cut off the last scene, what was said between Tommy and Sheila after they went off to the bedroom?

good episode. Spoiler: I jumped during the casket scene. and the funeral was creepy as well.

Willravel 08-22-2006 08:22 PM

I loved the Spoiler: phone message where Tommy and Kenny just stood there. That was hauntingly well done.

I agree. I think it was the episode of the season, by far.

Always, Always(!) set the DVR to record 5 minutes long. You don't want to miss any of this!
To answer your question... Spoiler: Tommy told her he's quiting the FDNY. Next weeks preview showed him asking another FDNY where to turn in his papers.

Psycho Dad 08-23-2006 04:22 AM

The opening sequence showing Spoiler: the reactions to Johnny's death was very well done as well. And the way things are looking, there may not be any of these guys on the FDNY next season. I hope that isn't the way it goes because they have a really great cast here IMHO.

Kadath 08-23-2006 04:44 AM

I was somehow looking away during "the casket scene." Spoiler: I assume Johnny opened his eyes and looked at Tommy, and that's what made Tommy slam the lid? I found the aftermath of the funeral to be disturbing. I'm all for celebrating his life or whatever, but Tommy's sister (not the deaf one, which is a really stupid tacked on addition to help keep the family at full strength) is essentially a sociopath. I was actually disappointed by this episode, but I'm glad Tommy didn't touch his brother's murderer. Talk about an empty revenge.

Yes, you are correct. That is why Tommy did what he did. (hopefully that is cryptic enough not to need a spoiler tag. )

qtpye4u84 08-25-2006 10:38 PM

I like it. But I dont have time to see it all the time.

Kadath 08-29-2006 07:09 PM

Callie Thorne usually irritates me, but I thought she was very good in this episode, really a step above her previous performances. Spoiler: Sort of disappointing. I felt the episode was a little too casual about the way things got tied up so there can be a next season. Lou's out is totally screwed (I enjoyed Artie Lange's cameo), Franco's daughter is out of the picture again (I like how they worked around not being able to get Susan Sarandon back) and Tommy's response to things made it seem like the character hadn't grown at all since the first episode. But I'm looking forward to next season. :)

Willravel 08-29-2006 07:14 PM

*yawn*, oh did I sleep through it?

KinkyKiwi 08-29-2006 10:09 PM

So when is next season? That finale certainly made me want more.
edit: oops, this is biznatch, but I was signed on my wife's account.

Psycho Dad 08-30-2006 04:13 AM

I'd suspect the next season starts sometime next summer. Maybe June as I seem to recall that being when this season started.

abbaker987 09-07-2006 11:34 PM

the ending to this season wasn't as suspenseful as the 2 episodes before it. It was very interesting and different. I can't wait to see what happens.

Psycho Dad 06-03-2007 06:11 PM

Just a heads up, the new season starts June 13th.

Willravel 06-03-2007 06:22 PM

I can't wait. This is one of my favorite shows.

yournamehere 06-23-2007 11:51 AM

Amazing thread - almost 3 years since the first post!

I started watching it last season, and it has become one of my favorites.

I'm still not up to speed on all the back stories - guess I'll have to buy the DVDs.

BTW, I would let Sheila do me while conscious.

Willravel 05-05-2009 06:40 PM

Time for necro.

If it's not yet aired in your area, check out Rescue Me tonight. The first 5 minutes are fucking incredible.

LordEden 05-18-2009 12:54 PM

I've been watching this show on TV right before season 5 started. Hulu has all 5 seasons on their site, so I watched the whole series back to back. Spoiler: Anyone else feel iffy about Michael J Fox's character on here? I love him as an actor, but as Sheila's new bf of the week? Tho I did like the bar scene with him and Tommy.

Thanks for the necro will, glad there is somewhere to talk about this show on the board. This show is fighting off House as my new favorite show on TV.

Willravel 05-18-2009 12:56 PM

House would never have an episode that opens with a multiple suitcase-nuke attack on New York city by terrorists. Rescue Me has balls.

LordEden 05-21-2009 09:18 AM

Just watched the Tuesday night show (Ep 7:Play) and wonder Spoiler: where did Katy run off too whenever Tommy and Janet drove off after the play? Did she run back to the school or was she running away from the school? I couldn't quite put my finger on it after I saw the show.

Psycho Dad 07-07-2009 07:38 PM

After a couple of piss poor seasons, this show is getting to be worth watching again. It still isn't on par with the first two seasons, but it is getting better at least.

Tommy needs to drink more is all I can figure.

LordEden 07-08-2009 06:32 AM

The last 5 minutes of last nights episode was fucking hilarious!
"Fucking cancer kids, not you the other cancer kids, you still hope."

I agree Psycho Dad, this season is shaping up to be really good. This season is 24 episodes right?

Willravel 07-08-2009 07:06 AM

I started out thinking the musical-esque moments with Sean were really dumb, but now I almost miss them.

Psycho Dad 07-08-2009 02:19 PM

I don't know how many episodes are in a season. And I still haven't watched last night's episode. When the show started to no be so swuft, I started letting the DVR record it and then I catch it when I can find some time.

And I've been fast forwarding through Sean's musical scenes. They seem too lip synchy.

yournamehere 07-08-2009 05:09 PM

The Sean scene lyrics are funny; the concept is getting old.
More Sheila with her kick-ass tan lines is what the show needs.

Okay, seriously - I'm looking forward to how Tommy's "I'm drinking again and it's alright " will blow up in his face, and who he'll take with him.
Also waiting for poor Lou's inevitable heartbreak from letting Candy back in his life.

Willravel 07-08-2009 06:03 PM

This is going to knock your socks off: it's actually the actor that plays Sean (Steven Pasquale) singing.
