City of God
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/city_of_god/
Easily one of the best movies I have seen this year, definetly an eye-opener to the surreal lifestyle that third world countries endure on a daily basis. The movie takes place in the 60's - 80's and tells the story of the youth gangs that ran the drug trade in the City of God, a slum in/near Rio De Janiero, Brazil. Anyways, I highly reccomend this movie if you are searching for something to rent.

Damn- I downloaded this movie not too long ago but unfortunately it was all in Portugese. I couldn't resist watching the first scenes and I was mesmerized, I stopped it and then deleted it because it looked too good to watch in another language. Will wait til I see it with English subtitles- looks amazing!

Awesome. Just awesome. For actors with little or no experience they were amazing. I think they were all actually from the "City of God" too.
Go see it.

It's scary to think that this is a pretty accurate depiction of Rio de Janeiro's slums (favelas). After Knockout Ned sells out to a gang you wonder if anyone in such poverty would want to work for a decent living.
As for the cinematics, I thought the moment at the dance party where "Kung Fu Fighting" drops in up until the conclusion of the party was incredibly tense. You know something bad is imminent, but it doesn't detract from its effect at all. |

Awesome movie!!
I was so distrought that I just missed out seeing it at the NZ International Film Festival last year, so imagine my joy when I found it in the New Release section of my neighbourhood video shop about six months back. Brilliant storytelling and cinematography.

The chicken scene is wonderfully entertaining, and one of the few, shall i say, whimsical parts of the film. Damn that movie was intense. I was hoping Knockout Ned was going to use some karate, but afterward realized how bad that would have made the movie - I love I authentic they kept it.

saw this last night on dvd. i thought the film was a vaguely interesting, pretty to look at film somewhere between superfly and any number of other subsequent films.
what was really interesting was the documentary, "a personal war"---the main feature is slicker, but the documentary is fascinating--particularly in that it shows everything the film leaves out--which bizarrely enough includes an coherent class dimension. the documentary made me think. the film did not. but together, it is a fine dvd.
