Superman (Returns)

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the thread in Tilted Entertainment that will be dedicated to the newest rendition of Superman. If any of you have followed this movie throughout its turbulent history of development, then you would know this film has had a rough start getting out the doors, getting a script, getting a star, getting a director. In fact, it's nigh possible that many people in Hollywood will refer to films that are this difficult in the nature of their creation as "Superman" films. No two people have stuck to this movie's development, be it writers, directors, producers, stars, and only Warner Bros. has kept a reign on this movie's development. Now, I've searched throughout Tilted Entertainment trying to find a thread that already existed for this very discussion, and found none. If there is one in another board, feel free to tell me.

With that being said, onto the latest news of our harrowing movie development.

From IGNFF:
Quote:

July 19, 2004 - Variety has confirmed a report first brought to you by IGN FilmForce: Bryan Singer has agreed to direct Superman for Warner Brothers! Joining Singer on the project will be his X2: X-Men United screenwriters Michael Dougherty & Dan Harris, which was first leaked by Ain't It Cool News. J.J. Abrams' script has been ditched.

This means, however, that Singer will not direct X-Men 3 as was previously reported. He might also have to pass up the remake of Logan's Run, which Variety claims Francis Lawrence (Constantine) might step in to direct instead.

The trade paper adds that "producers Neal Moritz and Gilbert Adler have apparently disappeared from the scene as well. The fate of Jon Peters also is up in the air. ... Moritz's deal was never made and it's uncertain whether Adler, who did have a deal, will remain involved." No word on casting yet.

"My interest in Superman dates back many, many years," Singer said in a statement. "In fact, it was the Richard Donner classic film that was my day-to-day inspiration in shaping the X-Men universe for the screen. I feel that Superman has been late in his return and it is time for him to fly again."

AICN claims that the film will be titled Superman Returns and that its plot "will not be an origin story. And something regarding the Christopher Reeve films and that universe has something to do with this."

Superman begins filming later this year in Australia.
So that's our first piece of news for this thread, and I'm sure there will be more to come. As disappointed as I am that Bryan Singer is giving us X-Fans the shaft by dropping off that project to hopefully work on the Superman project, I'm fully confident that Singer will do this franchise some much needed justice.

Charlatan 07-19-2004 09:38 AM

I'm just bummed it's getting filmed in Australia... it was supposed to be filmed in Toronto like X-Men 1... A good friend did some of the props on X-Men and would have gotten me onto the set this time...

Daval 07-19-2004 09:49 AM

I personally am looking very forward to a new superman movie :)

Kazic 07-19-2004 09:52 AM

Not very happy with this turn of events. X3 was going to be awsome. And Brian Singer has done an amazing job of the first 2. Ontop of that Halle Berry will not be playing the role of Storm either. In her place is Christina Milian. Although I am happy for Christina she seems a bit young for that part.
I am just hoping they don't get all stupid with it like the Batman franchise did.

Xiangsu 07-19-2004 11:22 AM

Its a shame Kevin Smith isn't writing the script for it. If he did it would definitely be a different kind of movie.

I'd rather have seen them just not have Storm. That's just stupid.

As for Superman, this is pretty cool. I hope it gets injected with some "coolness" though. I don't think I've ever thought a Superman feature was cool.

flamingdog 07-19-2004 01:47 PM

I think X3 is gonna turn into a shitstorm, and I liked the other two. Not hugely, but I enjoyed em. Superman might be cool, but the whole character fucks me off, so I wonder how he'll win me over?

Because of course, winning me over is the whole reason he's making the movie.

Cynthetiq 07-19-2004 02:19 PM

I'll believe it when I see it in the theaters... until then...

Fremen 07-19-2004 03:15 PM

I'm glad they got rid of McG as the director for Supes, 'cause his sequel to his first Charlie's Angels movie was a shitty mess.

I remember hearing that they asked him to write it, but he refused because of all the crap they wanted to change, like they didn't want superman to be from a different planet. Dumb stuff like that. I don't know if that's actually true though, just heard it from some friends.

Mr.Deflok 07-19-2004 11:20 PM

It sucks that McG isn't directing now, and that Beyonce isn't playing Lois and that Johnny Depp isn't playing Luthor. Yeah that's right, I'm high on some trippy ass drugs motherfucker. ;)

Fantastic news for sure but I would much rather see an X3 before a new Superman.

BTW Depp rocks but he's not Luthor... though he could probably play the part I just don't think he's right.

Kazic 07-20-2004 07:50 AM

They still don't have someone to play the big guy do they? Might almost be better to go with an unknown rather than using some. Well known.

"Superman returns. ...

Tom Cruise. Beyonce Knowles. Johnny Depp."

Same I would rather see an X3 with Brian Singer rather than a shit storm of stupid ideas in Superman returns.

Hedgehog 07-21-2004 06:39 PM

The rumor is that this movie will be in the same continuity as the original 4 movies. Superman has been away and "returns".

Not sure how I feel about that. I'm a big Smallville fan and I'd love for Tom Welling to get to wear the suit.

If they keep the previous movie continuity, we're talking about a Superman that's in his mid-thirties.

RedCometChar 07-21-2004 10:23 PM

I read a script overview of the new movie a few months ago, at Ain't it Cool, I believe. If they follow through on making the film I read about, (Krypton never exploded, Jimmy Olsen was gay, and Lex Luthor was also a Kryptonian) there is no possible way it will approach being good.

Aye, i loooove Smallville. Welling isn't the best actor, but i think he was cast very well, and seeing him in this would just be really cool, especially in terms of continuity.

Hedgehog 07-22-2004 06:45 PM

RedComet, If you'll read the first post carefully, you will see that as of July 19, this movie got a new director and script.

RedCometChar 07-22-2004 11:56 PM

I saw it, but at the time I didn't know the Abrams script and the asstacular story I read were one and the same. Best of luck to this production- they could use some, after all this. I think I was in junior high when they first started talking about it.

Kazic 07-23-2004 10:14 PM

I like the idea of Tom Welling as the Man of steel. I just don't dig that suit on him. I mean that suit on a real person looks silly. in comics and cartoons yeah but just dosen't translate very well. Thats why I think the draw to smallville is so big for me. I love the story lines and am so glad he dosen't fly or have that suit.

mr sticky 07-24-2004 04:53 AM

I'll now (maybe) start looking forward to it. I was cringing before. Does anyone know the casting? Last I heard Brendan Fraser was in the running for the Man of Steel. But a coup de grace would be Lawrence Fishburne to play Luthor. THAT would rock!

(come on, think about it for a minute. it will grow on you.)

fhqwhgads 07-24-2004 05:39 AM

I love Smallville as much as anybody, but I don't think that I'd like to see Welling as the man of steel in this context. I think that seeing him play Superman in a script that is outside of the Smallville story would take something away from Smallville. I love him as Superman, but in the farmboy context. Suddenly seeing him in the costume and flying and etc. would ruin the whole "trying to figure out where he fits" storyline that Smallville has going for it.

Key 07-24-2004 11:05 AM

i was really pumped when i heard this movie was coming out, but so far with all the production problems i think WB may be headed for a major bust.

I mean seriously, beyonce as lois lane? just the consideration of it, ugh. the more and more i hear about this movie the more and more it bums me out. fortunately, it's still a while away which means they still have time to fix it before it gets really broken.

the WB is pretty set on creating a star rather than recruiting one for the role of Superman, which is a good thing.

for those of you talking about Tom Welling, here's a couple shots Alex Ross made on his own on what he thought TW would look like in the role (from his site):

http://alexrossart.com/rossreport/april2004/supe1.html
http://alexrossart.com/rossreport/april2004/supe2.html

personally, i don't see him in the role at all. TW has confirmed he wouldn't do it either, for several reasons. One of them of course, being it would conflict with Smallville and he wouldn't be able to do both at once. I'd rather him keep doing smallville.

it'll be a while before final casting. i know beyonce has said she'd love to do the lois role, i don't know if they've confirmed it with her.

luthor's been associated with talks with johnny depp, kevin spacey, and vin diesel. nothing's been set on that one either.

World's King 07-24-2004 01:27 PM

It's gonna suck.

kevin smith did write a script. it followed the death of superman stroyline(well sorta). Luthor and braniac sic'd doomsday on supes, he died, and came back. there was stupid stuff in there that jon peters insisted on such as a gay robot companion to braniac and a giant robot spider ala wild wild west.
this was back in the mid 90s shortly before tim burton joined on and wanted nick cage to play supes.

personally if this finally gets off the ground i hope they either get kevin spacey or billy zane for luthor.

Hedgehog 07-25-2004 06:18 PM

There's only one more season for Smallville anyway, and it should start filming soon. After that, there's time for Welling to be considered if he wants to do it. The question is: Does he want to?

All he needs to do to look 5 or 10 years older is get a haircut.

Yikes indeed. Unless Lex Luthor carries around a big gun or something the entire time, Vin Diesel wouldn't be right for this at all. Unless he can convince somebody he has a brain in that 600-pound gorilla skull of his.

cameroncrazy822 07-27-2004 04:37 PM

I just hope whoever does it or whatever shape it ends up taking that the players involved give Christopher Reeves a bit part. By big part I mean asking him if he'll help on the promo junkett and give him mad props along the way to show their thanks for what he did for the franchise. Money would also be nice but at the very least a whole lotta credit and kudos would serve as a just start.

thespian86 07-28-2004 06:22 AM

Sorry guys and gals but this needs to be said. Superman is the weakest superhero ever.

I mean, for one thing, he's invinsible. Where's the fun in that? His only weakness is a peice of stone from his planet that was destroyed a LONG time ago. He is super fast, super strong. And good looking... I say thats just unfair.

Let me move on to reason number two. Every crimal, petty or rich mastermind, has some way stumbled upon a peice of kryptonite. That just means that everyone can stand up to him with a little rock in their hand and go "I win".

I guess he just pisses me off
