has anyone seen the trailer for this?

having something like this happen is one of my biggest fears. the most interesting thing to me was that this was such a low budget movie that they put the actors in the water with real sharks to film the scenes. so everything you see is what they were able to film in the ocean.

I think it looks too scary!

Then again, I am a bit claustrophobic, and being surrounded by all that water scares me- it even creeped me out during Finding Nemo.

Jaws for scuba divers. I love how they base it on a true story, when Spoiler: the two divers were never found - so where is the basis for everything that happened after the boats left them?.

My brother told me about this. It sounds like an interesting idea.

I just watched the trailer and, being a scuba diver, it gave me the creeps. Reminds me of Blair Witch in a way...

Like most of Hollywood, being based on true events has little to do with what actually happened.

This happens more often than many would think (not everything but being left behind by the boat).

This is based on the story of Tom and Eileen Lonergan who were left behind during a dive trip on the Great Barrier Reef in January 1998. The crew of their dive boat, Outer Edge, either miscounted or didn't count heads before returning to Port Douglas. Spoiler: Tom's dive bag, with his wallet inside, remained on the boat for two days, and two other dive trips, before it was opened and someone raised the alarm. They were never found.

I remember when this happened. It made a big splash in Australia. Dive tourists are the bread and butter of northen Queensland.

I was there at the time and had actually dived the same area of the reef earlier that month. I had chartered a different boat though. I remember replaying in my head how my crew had meticulously counted heads after each dive.

As one who has dived with sharks and other nasties in the ocean, being left behind was never really a primary concern. I never really thought about until then. I can't imagine the horror of surfacing only to find an empty ocean.

The trailer definitely made me want to see this when it hits theaters.

It did look pretty interesting. Very Blair witch-like. I hope it's short though because it looks like it could get pretty boring after a while.

I have no idea how this movie ends, but I doubt it's on a negative note. Hollywood sells happy endings.

I was thinking of starting this post. Being a diver myself, it interests me, I don't know if it interests me enough to see it in the theatre but I will see it. The trailer reminds me of Phonebooth, I wonder if it is going to be pulled off as well as Phonebooth was.

Kinda OT, but in response to the "Based on a true story" mentioned above:

Based on a true story doesn't always mean it has to follow what happened. It merely provided inspiration to create the movie.

Case in point: Texas Chainsaw Massacre. They used the words "inspired by a true story" which prompts people to question whether or not someone actually wielded a chainsaw and killed people.

Nope! The story was simply inspired by real life Ed Gein, which shares similarities with Leatherface.

Looks like an interesting movie, but... I don't know. A good concept for a short story maybe, but 2 hour movie seems a bit much.

I watched it on DVD last nite...so I didnt have the "theatre" experience but I thought it was moving story.

I will admit to being one of those people that is not impressed by a "hollywood" movie....I want a movie to make me feel something and this one did. I dont need blood and guts and things blowing up to understand a movie can be good.

I knew the "true events" it was based on before I watched it, because, well any educated person would do research before going to see a movie thats supposed to have a "true" element so that they know about what they are going to see. Just like with the Perfect Storm...I knew the story and knew that most of the movie was going to have to be "fiction" because no one really knows what happened.

The end of the movie left me with the knowledge of the sheer desperation, terror, anger and monotiny that anyone in this situation would go thru. I cannot imagine what would be going thru my head floating along in the VAST expanse of the ocean, with nothing to see, water all around and not being able to drink it and not knowing was was underneath me.

I think the people, like me, that enjoyed this movie saw it for the "intellectual, emotional" movie that it was. The people that didnt.....well thats the people "hollywood" movies are for. The people that didnt like it need to remember its not a hollywood movie, it was an indie film that was picked up from Sundance.....all Lions Gate did was pick it up and market it.......just like blair witch

Terrible fucking movie...that's all that needs to be said about it. It was boring, predictable, short, unsatisfying, and stupid. There is nothing redeeming about this movie at all. See it if you want to waste a measly hour of your life.

I loved the minimalist presentation, the gradual escalation of the problem, and the sheer existential terror.

Blanchard Ryan was spot on in her performance, and the guy was mostly convincing. I like character driven movies, and when you strip away the plot elements, you really have a strong emotional core for Open Water. The movie can be read as a metaphor for any long-term relationship under stress, and how a couple reacts to the stress.

It's also a good example of a movie with an early point of no return. I like to analyze a story to determine the exact point at which the events that occur become inevitable. In Open Water, it's when the boat leaves. Nothing the couple does following that makes any difference in their ultimate fate, except for the woman's final decision, the only decision left to her.

Worst movie ever

Didn't overlly care for the movie. After about 5 five minutes all I wanted was for everyone to just die. Chick was annoying, guy was annoying. Girl at the time was scared by it, but then again she was already afraid of said thing happening so eh...
