Skewing the ratings systems your way ;-)

First, before I begin, let me say that I know nothing about movies at all. Sure, I attend movies and I know what I like and what I don't like, but really, I know nothing at all about the history of cinema nor am I a big movie buff. Now that the disclaimer has been let out...

Has the movie ratings system been going to hell? I mean, I wish I could say that I remember a time when a PG-13 movie contained little to no cuss words, but I really don't know. Has it always been like that? Recently at a screening of Chronicle of Riddick, I was shocked to hear the usage of F-words and the display of much gore and violence. Why wasn't this movie rated R? Another example I can fall back to is Titanic. It may have been artistic, but I wonder how many parents were shocked to find a full nudity scene nicely hidden in the movie, as well as a pretty steamy sex scene.

I'm not saying that all movies should ban all sex scenes or nothing of that nature at all. I love violent, profanity ladden films that contain sex and chicks flashing their boobs. But what I am asking is the legitimacy of the ratings system.

If YOU were on the ratings board of the MPAA, how would you rate the films?

According to the MPAA, here are the ratings.

PG-13: Parents Strongly Cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. This signifies that the film rated may be inappropriate for pre-teens. Parents should be especially careful about letting their younger children attend. Rough or persistent violence is absent; sexually-oriented nudity is generally absent; some scenes of drug use may be seen; one use of the harsher sexually derived words may be heard.

Ok, maybe I'm just whining, but really, I am interested in what you guys have to say about the ratings systems and how you would rate what's appropriate for kids and what's not. As for me, I would keep things the way they are since I think that society is changing to accept more violent things. However, anything below PG-13 should be kept the same, as in no excessive violence or profanity.

A "pedophilic" sex scene nonetheless. He was 21, she was just short of her 18th birthday. I know that's not technically pedophillia but it is the generally accepted meaning of the word.

My suggested ratings:

Kids - No (real) violence, no sex or drugs -IE: Aladin
G - Some shocking scenes, no sex or drugs - IE: Finding Nemo
PG - Minor violence, scattered foul language - IE: Bruce Almighty
Teen - Serious themes, violent action scenes, some T&A - IE: The Rundown, Riddick (which I have not seen)
17+ - Anything goes.

Regardless of the rating system some jackass parent will think their kid is old enuff to "handle it." When I saw South Part:BL&UC, there was a parent in front of me with a 10yr old girl. What is wrong with these people?
