Targets. 1968, by Peter Bogdanovich. Boris Karloff is in it (but is not the lead). A strange little sniper movie. Two thumbs way, way up.

No-one's mentioned 'Clue' yet. Personally one of may favourite 'stupid comedies'.

Movie of the board game, made in the 80s, starring Tim Curry and Christopher Lloyd. Very funny, in a very corny sort of way.

*Obscure Movie Recommendations*

There was a thread similar to this in the last incarnation of TFP but I never got around to printing out that thread. I remember there were alot of good recommendations that I was looking forward to seeing but can only remember a handful...

Here's a few to start, please use the same format if possible -

Lock , Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels
Tagline: A Disgrace to Criminals Everywhere.

Plot Outline: Four London working class stiffs pool their money to put one in a high stakes card game, but things go wrong and they end up owing half a million pounds and having one week to come up with the cash.

Up the Creek
Tagline: Get set to get wet ... at the funniest, raciest, wildest white-water raft race ever!

Plot Summary: Bob McGraw is in his 12th year of college, goofing his way through life. Bob, Irwing, Gonzer and Max are the four losers forced and bribed...

Blood and Donuts
Plot Summary: Boya, a vampire who went to sleep in 1969, is awakened in modern day Toronto by a stray golf ball. He becomes involved in the lives of a hapless cabby...

Storm Riders
Plot Outline: An evil warlord takes in 2 students (Wind & Cloud) in an effort to become invincible so he can take over the world.

Near Dark
Tagline: Killing you would be easy, they'd rather terrify you...forever.

Plot Summary: A mid-western farm boy reluctantly becomes a member of the undead when a girl he meets turns out to be part of a band of southern vampires who roam the highways in stolen cars. Part of his initiation includes a bloody assault on a hick bar.

City of Lost Children, The
Tagline: Where happily ever after is just a dream.

Plot Outline: A scientist in a surrealist society kidnaps children to steal their dreams, hoping that they slow his aging process.

Plot: Francis and Blake Falls are Siamese twins who live in a neat little room in a rundown hotel. While sharing some organs, Blake is always fit and Francis is very sickly. Into their world comes a young lady (Michele Hicks), who turns their world upside down. She gets involved with Blake, and convinces the two to attend a Halloween party, where they can pass themselves off as wearing a costume. Eventually Francis becomes really ill, and they have to be separated. They then face the physical and mental strains that come from their proposed separation.

The Specials
Tagline: Not as good as regular superheroes, but slightly better than you.

Plot: America's 7th Best Superhero Team, the Specials, are a group of geeks and oddballs. We get to see one day in their lives as fan and new member Nightbird joins the group. The Specials try to launch a line of action figures and deal with their leader, The Strobe, disbanding the group after he finds out his wife Ms. Indestructible and The Weevil having an affair.

But I'm a Cheerleader
Tagline: A Comedy Of Sexual Disorientation

Plot: Megan is an all-American girl. She's a cheerleader, she has a boyfriend, etc. But she doesn't like kissing her boyfriend very much. And she's pretty touchy with her cheerleader friends. And she only has pictures of girls up in her locker. Her parents and friends conclude that she *must* be gay and send her off to "sexual redirection" school, full of admittedly homosexual misfits, where she can learn to how to be straight. Will Megan be turned around to successful heterosexuality, or will she succumb to her love for the beautiful Graham?

Grosse Pointe Blank
Tagline: Even A Hit Man Deserves A Second Shot!

Plot Outline: Martin Blank is a professional assassin. He is sent on a mission to a small Detroit suburb, Grosse Pointe, and, by coincidence, his ten-year high school reunion party is taking place there at the same time.

And Maveric, Near Dark kicked ass!

I started that thread last time, and I was thrilled to get so many responses -- more than I could probably ever watch! Thanks to everyone who contributed, and PLEASE feel free to repost any of your earlier recommendations here!

Sadly I wasn't able to save it before the last board died, so if *anyone* happened to save all or part of it and could send it to me i'd be really grateful!
Please PM me if so.

Here are some cool ones:

The Fearless Hyena -- oldschool Jackie Chan flick, and yup that's where I got my name. The kung fu is AMAZING and the comedy is utterly ridiculous!! It's a damn laugh riot! One of the greatest martial arts sleeper films.

The Harder They Come -- My favorite movie of all time. It's cool on so many different levels. The music is incredible -- it was made during the time that reggae was still evolving. It's THE definitive movie on reggae music.

But to me, the story behind it is even more powerful, it's about a guy who moves from the country to the city in search of a new life with the promise of opportunity and prosperity. He tries to make a record but is only confronted by countless forces working against him, people looking to take advantage of him. The only way he's able to gain fame and fortune is by turning gangster. It speaks volumes...check it out, they should have it at Blockbuster.

Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels -- Brilliant film! Already mentioned above. If you liked Reservoir Dogs, you gotta check this out. These guys try to settle a gambling debt by stealing a shitload of weed and trying to sell it back to the guys they bought it from. One of the few DVDs I own.

What Do You Say To a Naked Lady? -- 1969 movie by Allen Funt from Candid Camera...incredible film!! I can't recommend this one enough. If you're not doing anything tonite, go to the video store and rent it NOW!! Even with youre girlfriend/boyfriend, they won't find it offensive...It explores peoples perceptions of sexuality by filming their reactions to nudity in public and that sort of thing. Like a nude woman will roll up to someone and ask for directions...I don't know how to describe it really, but I'd recommend it to everyone!

Double Indemnity -- Classic Billy Wilder film. It's OLD, but one of the best! Another one of the few movies I've actually ever bought.

I was going to mention Dog Soldiers and But I'm A Cheerleader but I got beat on those.

Anybody ever heard of Desert Blue? It's a tiny little movie about a kid who's trying to finish his dead fathers dream of a water park out in the middle of the desert. The plot is quirky and the acting is EXCELLENT by some of Hollywoods brightest youngsters. Here's a rundown of the stars.

Casey Affleck
Brendan Sexton III
Kate Hudson
Christina Ricci
John Heard
Ethan Suplee
Sara Gilbert

I have to ORDER anybody who hasn't seen it to go and rent, no BUY, "The Big Lebowski". I bought it after I had rented it 5 times, and realized it would be cheaper to own it.

Somebody said "Chopper", and I fully agree.

Some Japanese flicks that are awesome:
"Sharkskin man and Peach hip girl"
-Has a gangster in a white leather suit going down on all four, 50 metres away from a cabin. He sniffs in the air, and says:
"He's with a girl. She has just washed her hair. She's got her period".

"Sonatine"
Gangster realizes he's been taking life too seriously.

"Hana-Bi"
Beautiful film about a police officer who's wife is dying from cancer. He is in debt to the yakuza since he can't afford her treatment, and robs a bank to take her on holiday for the last time.

"Tokyo Fist"
Triangle drama. Boxer - Insurance salesman - Salesman's wife.
Involves violence, self-piercing, boxing, and an extreme amount of self-loathing.

I'll second that recommendation for Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky. The effects are so phony-looking yet so hideous at the same time... the movie also features a fat, iron-claw handed warden who keeps Tic-Tacs in his glass eye. It's one of the most unforgettable Kung-Fu movies I've ever seen (although that classification may be misleading- Ricky doesn't usually need to hit anyone more than once).

Five Deadly Venoms- great fight choreography, cool characters, and a plot that keeps you guessing until the end.

Six String Samurai- A post-apocalyptic movie about a sword-swinging Buddy Holly as he battles cannibals, rockabilly Communists, and Death (in a Motley Crue wig and hat) on his quest to take over the late King Elvis' throne.
