One of the best lines to come out of a bad movie ever.... |
A few I like.
Avalon, about an outlawed VR game that has a bad habit of leaveing the players brain dead. A Japanes director, a French cast, and filmed in Poland. REALLY good. Baise Mio(sp) French. Think Thelma and Lousie with hard core sex and more violenc. Mr. Frost. Jeff Goldblome doing the scariest Satan I've ever seen. British film Verses. Japaness zombie move. This movie is SO worth just for the ending. And the fights in it are pretty kick ass. And if you are like me, and love bad films, here is a true classic piece of crap. Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS. If you have eveb seen Hogans Hero's, you will reconize the set right away. They would sneak in to film after they got done filming the show. This movie is so bad the director pulled his name from it. I'm sure I'll think of more down the line.... |

I killed your cat, you druggie bitch!... I thought it would bring closure to our relationship! |
I'll have to recommend the movie
Wasabi with Jean Reno. It's a French-made action movie set in Japan in which he discovers he has a 19 year old daughter. You really have to watch it in the original French with English subtitles to get the right feel for the movie. Did I mention you can see Jean Reno attempt to play DDR? For that scene alone it's worth the rental fee. |
Roger Dodger and a bit less obsure but i thought it was a teen movie till I saw it, a great dark comedy, Rules of Attraction

I would recommend:
The Man Who Wasn't There Life is Beautiful Snatch Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels Pi Run Lola Run Cat's Meow Touch of Evil Memento Swingers |
Oh yeah, one more I forgot about. Ruling Class with Michel Cain. GREAT film. Cain is fucking BRILLIENT in that film. See it. See it. See it.
|
try looking up "Cold Dog Soup"
the premiss is one man learning all of the different ways to get rid of a dead dog in New York and the adventures that follow |
You can't go wrong with anything by Christopher Guest; Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show and A Mighty Wind. Also Drop Dead Gorgeous. And Scottland, PA is a good indie flick.

Bubba Ho-tep!
http://www.bubbahotep.com/ Check out the trailer, it's a very goofy movie. Bruce Campbell plays Elvis, and Ossie Davis (a black man) plays JFK. It's basically about how Elvis and JFK are still alive, but holed up in an old folks home. Patients start dying left and right, and they find out that this Cowboy Mummy, Bubba Hotep, is sucking the souls out of the elderly in the home. It's up to them to stop it. :D Very good, but insanely goofy, movie. |
Delicatessen - v funny french black comedy surreal but great
Versus - japanese, reasonably popular cult wise i think, it has everything, zombies, vampires, yazuka, bit of a anime style to it, although live action Cube - Entertaining movie about people stuck in a giant cube heh, done on a low budget if i remember correctly, its good fun Spirited away - anime, had to go to a arthousy cinema to see this on release over here (uk) but seems to be advertised more main stream now, good for kids as well as adults, brilliant anime, Naked lunch - semi biography of william S burrough, the guy seems to be tripping all the time, cockroach typewriters etc, 4 rooms, - almost 4 short films in one about a hotel on new years eve, directed by 4 different directors, including tarentino and robert rodriquez funny in parts, and a interesting experiment Lock stock + 2 smoking barrels + snatch, very popular over here, dunno bout anywhere else, but exellent britsh style gangster films/black comedy Battle Royale - japanese - School Kids forced to fight to the death on a island, classic stuff Donnie Darko - Big fav of mine, Why are you wearing that stupid man suit? Equilibrium - So-so movie, but the action is above average, gun kata = win Pi - Dark, about a scientist trying to find the universal pattern in everything, i love the way its filmed Brotherhood of the wolf, - french, saw it in the cinema in french, heard it has been translated/dubbed for the dvd, martial arts/action/period drama? heh but good all the same Snake in the eagles shadow - classic young jackie chan 24 hour party people - a docu-film, but with steve cougan and peter kay, if your a fan of british style humour see this - the rise of factory records and hacienda club, joy devision etc, The filth and the fury - all bout the sex pistols City Of GoD - amazing film about kids growing up in rio de jeneiro , violent + shocking probs some more ill throw out later, but these are what i can think of off the top of my head |

Midnight Express is a pretty good movie about getting arrested in Trukey for trying to smuggle hash. Also a french movie called Delicatessen, dark but funny.

This is a great movie, in and of itself... I would also like to recommend, Donnie Darko. One of my personal favorites. :D Let me know what you think, ok? :) |
you can tell alot about people from the movies they consider "obscure" recommendations...
a couple of mine, which are, by far, not even close to a complete list: Baraka - a more recent film, but not as good as: Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, and Naqoyqatsi (a trilogy) Ichi the Killer Happiness of the Katakuris and for something slightly less obscure... Triplettes of Belleville (sp?) Waking Life |
Hawk the Slayer
Me, Natalie The Scarlet Pimpernel (The one starring Leslie Howard) Kull Are on my list, I love nothing better then watching these on a lazy Saturday afternoon. |
Cube
Death Race 2000, where the idea for Carmageddon PC Games come from Those are 2 of my fave obscure movies. |
If you like Run Lola Run, you might try "Heaven". It's by the same director, and is, IMHO, much better. It's also in English (IIRC -- oddly enough, I sometimes have trouble remembering what language a movie's in).
|
The Gods Must Be Crazy (hilarious!)
|
"La Jetée". A movie made up entirely of still photographs with a guy narrating the story. Unique and beautifully poetic.
Terry Gilliam based "Twelve Monkeys" on it |

I'll throw my vote to tampopo, very good/funny. |
Just saw this yesterday:
Cavedweller - "A traumatic event sends a musician (Sedgwick) back to her hometown in an effort to reunite with the daughters she abandoned. To do so, she must confront her abusive ex-husband (Quinn), from whom she fled years ago." With Kyra Sedgwick and Aidan Quinn (nominated for Independent Spirit awards for Best Female Lead and Best Supporting Male) and (very briefly) Kevin Bacon and Sherilynn Fenn. Pretty decent slow paced drama (the slow pacing works for the small rural town setting). It's set in Cairo, GA (south Georgia town a good friend of mine grew up in), but, unfortunately, they went and filmed the movie in Canada (like most movies do these days so they can save money). |
Well I think I'd have to say Whale Rider. I was kind of forced to watch it at the time, but I came out of the movie really liking it and am seriously considering buying it.
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg Description There is a legend that Paikea rode on the back of a whale and led his people to New Zealand. Since that time tradition has decreed that the first-born male descendant will become chief of the tribe. Then Pai is born...and she is a girl. She grows up within a close-knit village which retains the tribes traditional spiritual relationship with the sea and their warrior values. Although loved by all, Pai faces rejection from her grandfather, Koro, who is brokenhearted that there is no grandson to carry on the line. |
You know, Mystery Men just never got the respect it deserved. On the other hand Das Boot did.
|
don't know if this has been posted yet.
Aguiree, The wrath of God. One of my favourite films. |

Re: Aguirre. I just thought it was the most boring film ever (and I enjoy 'artsy' movies, so it's not just philistinism). For those who don't know, it's about a group of conquistadors who get trapped in the Amazon jungle and have to take a raft back down the Amazon. I thought they captured the boredom of being stuck on a raft for weeks and communicated it to the audience very well.

Metropolitan by writer / director Whit Stillman has some of the best dialog ever recorded on film.
The Vanishing, original Dutch version has the creepiest ending I've ever seen. Wages of Fear, a French movie about a group of men driving trucks filled with nitro glycerin up a dangerous mountain road. Real white-knuckle stuff. |
Maybe Delicatessen by Jeunet, that has been already mentioned. Hungarian Kontroll was great, but I suppose it is hard to find. And Asian movies, just about anything by Takashi Miike is pretty bloody obscure. The last one I saw was Gozu and it was...well, weird. But great.
