Last Comic Standing 2004
I really liked the first season of Last Comic Standing (although I don't think Dat Phan should have won). This season has just started and I get the feeling that they're selecting the comics based more on who will be interesting to watch in the house rather than who is the funniest. But it's hard to tell because they show so little of the stand-up routines. I also noticed that they only had auditions in NY (last season they had both East Coast and West Coast audition shows). I guess they decided that people are funnier in NY, which is true

I liked last season as well and thought Dat Phan should have won. The attitude of the other comedians toward him was pathetic. I'm glad he knocked so many of them out of the competition. What the hell happened to him? Did he get anything out of winning? Or were they so pissed because an amateur who kept a notebook won that they ignored him?
As far as this year's I've only seen one partial episode so far (didn't even realize it was back on the air until I happened upon it while it was on). Jay Mohr is definitely trying to stack the deck. Last year they had Voss on this year they've got Jim Norton into the next round. Both were frequent guests (and one a cohost) on the Opie and Anthony radio show. Mohr was tight with all of them. And, of course, Voss is back on now as a judge. The old guy from the other night (had cancer but is back doing stand up) is another professional that I've seen around quite a bit in the past. The judges definitely gave their favorites more opportunity by talking to them and pushing them to do other bits of their acts which the judges had seen elsewhere in clubs and such. I see it might go down a very bad track with the way they're picking those that made it through to the next round.

While I like the show and really like Norton [can't wait for O&A to get back on the air] not sure it is fair that friends of Mohr and fairly established guys get to be onthe show...should be more for up and coming ones, I think.

I watched some of this new season, but I'm wary because last season was such a huge letdown when Dat Phan won. I didn't think he was funny at all... It seemed like the only reason he won was because people who hadn't seen his material were like, "Haha look, an Asian talking in a funny Asian accent! He is the greatest funnyman ever!!" There was no wit or cleverness in his jokes at all. 5th grade humor Maybe I'll stay tuned this season if I don't see crap like that again early on.

The rest of the comics just didn't translate any energy in their performances and most of their stuff was boring and unoriginal too. They all seemed to assume that they could give half assed performances and beat the "amateur" and, in the end, they got spanked.

How about looking at the response from the crowd last year?
Ralphie May had the entire room standing up halfway through his set. How did Dat win? Voss did decent, which took votes that would have most likely went to Ralphie. I hate the "let America vote" shows because oftentimes the most deserving doesn't win, instead it's the worst one who is different because the vote is split between one, two, or three of the great ones.

One day an Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman walked into a pub together. They each bought a pint of Guinness. Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in each of their pints. The Englishman pushed his beer away in disgust. The Scotsman fished the fly out of his beer and continued drinking it, as if nothing had happened. The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!" |

How stupid was it for McFarlane to go up against Heffron. He was one of her only friends. Why not choose one of the comics who she didn't like? Then she went on to really suck in the elimination round. Too bad, I liked some of her stuff; "If I got a boob job, I would definitely show some restraint. I would just get one done."
