Help finding older scifi book-book cover description
 

Not sure buy I think this was written in early 80's, could be way off though.

The book cover is a starfield, with a man in a hooded cloak standing in one corner, facing you. This was part of a series, and rather lenghthy. I know it was by a fairly large name author, and that the artist is well known also. Any help?
