Good Foreign Films
Anyone see any good foreign films lately.
Usually, when I go rent a movie, I check out the foreign film section. It makes a refreshing change to watch a movie that does not have the same predictable American format and story layout. One of the best foreign films that I have seen is INTACTO. It is French with English subtitles and it is an amazing movie based on an underground gambling world of people who are lucky and those people who bet on them. It is an incredible concept and it takes a while before you figure out what is going on. |
Mystery Train isn't acutaly a foreign film, I think, but it's sill one of my favorites.
Fallen Angels is another really good one. I really don't watch many foreign movies, not really sure why, I guess I'm too addicted to hollywood money :( Also, I'm pretty sure that Intacto is Spanish. |
Nueve Reinas is a great con man flick. I speak spanish but the subtitles aren't too bad to read.
By the way INTACTO is spanish from Espana my friend. |
Au Revoir Les Enfants is a descent movie for a WWII, French coming-of-age story.
Cenima Paradiso is a descent Italian coming-of-age story with a theater as the plot device. |
Any film by Akira Kurosawa, namely Seven Samurai and Yojimbo (I say this so often I probably seem like Kurosawa's bitch).
|
i recently saw a russian movie called "house of fools" and it was really good. touched upon "war as insanity" in its themes.
|
Master of the Flying Guillotine is a pretty good 70's Kung-fu film.
|
"dirty pretty things" was the last good foreing film. "central station" from brazil is a heart breaker (its abouta boy who gets abondoned by his mother)
|
Abre Los Ojos - it's the Spanish movie Vanilla Sky is based off of, and it's much much better IMO.
|
I prefer foreign movies and these are some of the best I've seen so far:
Ying Xiong/Hero - japanese movie by Yimou Zhang Festen/The Celebration - Danish dogme movie by Thomas Vinterberg Tacones Lejanos/High Heals - Spanish movie by Pedro Almodóvar Dancer In The Dark - Danish movie by Lars von Trier |
Amores Perros.
|
Babettes feast - danish movie
|
"Together"
"Lilja 4-ever" "Show Me Love" All Swedish, and all by Lukas Moodysson. |
Always good to go with "Amelie"
I also like a film called "Before the Rain", but don't remember if it was produced in America or not. |
Wow, that's really weird. The Intacto movie I saw had the actors speaking French with English subtitles. It must have been dubbed over. I've also tried to download it a couple of times and received some German porn documentary and another version of the movie dubbed in Russian.

Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring- A two part French series. I loved them so much I went out and hunted them down to buy for myself
|
Kandahar was pretty good, and felt really surreal due to some great cinematography and how foreign a culture it portrays.
|
ALPHAVILLE, 1965, B/W, Directed by Jean-Luc Godard, In French w/English subtitles.

I really like "The Last Kiss," or "L'Ultimo Bacio." It's an italian film about a group of friends, all around 30, who come to grips with settling down, at what not.
I also like "Talk To Her," or "Hable Con Ella," a spanish flick which I think won an academy recently. Another good one is "Ju Dou," a Chinese film by Zhang Yimou (director of the upcoming "Hero"), which is basically a rendition of "The Postman Always Rings Twice." |
Run Lola Run.
I could (and have) watch this movie repeatedly for hours. In addition to the mind-fucking plot, I just LOVE the scenes of her running...endlessly running... |
I just saw "Sex and Lucia" this week, and it was pretty great.
Usually, I go for the French movies, but this one, as well as some of the more recent Almodovar films ("Talk to Her", "All About my Mother") have me more interested in Spanish cinema. If you really want to break out of the Hollywood formula, but want to see something in English, check out Peter Greenaway's films ("The Pillow Book", "Prospero's Books", "Drowning By Numbers", etc.) Most people I know hate his stuff, but he has an entirely different approach to filmmaking. |
3 great French movies by the same director:
Delicatessen City of the Lost Children (La Cité des enfants perdus) Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) |
What halx said.. but i haven't seen delicatessen so i can't really comment on that one. but yeah those other 2 french movies in addition to Il Postino... cute movie.
|
Recent has to be City of god. excellent. Few years back. Betty Blue was very good.
|
My favorite foreign movie has to be Troy. Best Greek movie ever made. Way better than "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".

Does the French Connection count? lol. I'm not a real fan of foreign films. I guess becasue I haven't been exposed to o often and the whole sub-titles thing seems to be a hindrance.
|
here's a couple of votes for City of God and Amores Perros. both superb movies.
|
I'm not sure if you consider this foreign, but a movie called My Little Eye. It was made in America but only released in UK until a few weeks ago.
Anyways, excellent snuff movie. :) |

I must admit, I have never heard of Show Me Love, but when I typed the name of that movie into IMDB, I was directly sent to this. Interesting, I may have to see it now. ;)

If you want to watch a chickflick that's enjoyable for guys and girls.. check out My Sassy Girl.
It's Korean.. and one of my favourite movies. I think Hollywood is making an Americanized version of it, like they did with the Ring. But the original is almost always better. :) |

I saw Das Experiment yesterday, and it really is a strong film/mindfuck!
Goodbye, Lenin is just plain fun, but with a serious undertone. |
i second powerclown on alphaville.
tarkowsky's "solaris" is just amazing. "le circle rouge" is fine stuff--french film noir-ish. "coup de torchon" i really really like--jom thompson's book pop.1280 mapped onto senegal in the 1930s---excellent film--tavernier directed. "the fast runner" as well....inuit with subtitles--beautiful film... there are quite a few iranian films that i like--have a weakness for kairostami. o and "yeelen"---a total headfuck---you'll not see anything like it. it s hard to explain---better just to watch. |
Kikujiro was alright... if a bit slow...
