Four New Thomas Covenent Books
http://www.stephenrdonaldson.com/
I personaly couldn't stand the series, but I know many TFPers enjoyed it greatly from reading the various threads on book recommendations, so thought this might be welcome :) |
Blah. I own 3 of the 6 currently out books as given to me by a neighbor in a batch of books, all out of order, just a random selection. I tried to read the first book in the series and got about halfway through before losing interest. Give me his Gap Series any day. Thomas is a wank.

I agree with you Pellaz. I tried to get into the series but just couldn't. It was just too damn depressing. After he raped that young girl because he didn't elieve the world was real....I just couldn't read anymore.

EXCELLENT NEWS!
for those of you who gave up on the TC series, I must tell you that the Second Chronicles (books 4, 5, and 6) are well worth any misgivings you might have on the first three (and in particular, the first, Lord Foul's Bane). Gjefflin: I understand your feelings about the rape. I too seriously had trouble with the first 3 or 4 chapters. But I plowed through and was rewarded by the effort. If you do the same, you will find that the rape is a CRITICAL issue later on in the series. In fact, one might go so far as to say it is THE most important part of the series, in that the guilt that Covenant feels over the act becomes the motivation that drives him throught the entire series. |
Wohoo! Good news!
|
I just may have to try to stomache the books after lord foul- just could not get behind the hero the first go round- he was just totaly unappealing, and a rapist, and just the antithesis of everything I think a hero has to be, not even should be, but HAS to be, just to get the title- all he did was whine while good people died, and during his one frenzied take charge moment, rape a young girl- maybe the others will somehow make this guy tolerable?
|
Read the series for the Blood Guard. They are awesome.
|
I would like to point out that rape is a central issue in the Gap Series by SRD as well. Something is wrong with the man.
|
not to start a controversy or anything else, but does anyone know if the author had any stuff in his background to influence him to make rape such a central theme- just curious
|
I'm not sure about his background, but it could well be that rape is just a powerful theme that isn't used much. That's reason enough to spin it out, I think.
|
This is excellent news. the covenant series was fantastic and I enjoyed the gap series. I cant wait for these new books.
|
I read all six books some time ago and was really annoyed through them all... if I wasn't such a completionist I would have chucked the series after the first book...

If I remember correctly it was the whole leprosy/I'm a bad man/guilty conscience thing -- dragging on for 6000 pages -- that was annoying... But when I am desperate I will read anything, I suppose... |
I ordered the first chronicles from SFBC with high hopes, I too read to the rape and put it down... actually I went up to the used book store and traded it for other books....
