The WB's Superstar USA

Has anyone watched this show?

It's a kind of copy of American Idol, except that they are tricking the good singers into thinking that they suck, and encouraging the really awful ones. All this leads up to a big finale where one horrible singer gets a record deal and $150,000, plus the enjoyment of finding out, on national TV, that they are a horrible singer and have been massively tricked.

I watched about two episodes of it, and wow. It's very mean, but so very entertaining.

Thoughts?

I think all the people that came up with, helped produced, and made this show possible should be put in a line and shot, execution style.

This is so stupid. Encouraging people like william hung and any other retard who thinks they entertain people with music should be a crime against humanity. What right is it of yours, or anyones, to give people false hopes? To tell someone they're good at something, even though they're horrible at it, and just laugh at them behind their back? It isn't funny, and I don't want to hear people that can't sing.

At least in American Idol, the bad ones are told they are bad. Its something people need to hear, so they can get on with their lives. You can ruin someone's entire life by giving them false hope. It isn't right. Why don't we just bring back gladiators? Have them fight lions and crap? Man, it pisses me off to no end. Meanwhile, there are plenty of talented people that deserve so much more starving and working a stupid job to pay for a place to live.

Sorry, i'm ranting at this point. But man, I can't stand something like this. I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that i'm a music major, but still. It's stupid, as is most other reality TV. Whatever happened to real TV? With scripts? Grrr.

It's pretty awful. It's not as bad as The Swan, but it's close. I don't know if the creators should be shot, but I sure wouldn't mind gutpunching them.

I think it would have been good as a 10 minute skit on Mad TV or SNL. It was funny for about 5 minutes then it became mean/dumb.

It's funny as hell. I have laughed my ass off the whole time. That producer is so much better the Simon. Simon is just rude, this guy tears people up. When the girl who could sing sang the Canadian national anthem, he said "I can't believe you would sing the canadian anthem. This is superstars USA. You canadians think you can come down here and take American jobs, like Brian Adams, Celine Dionne" etc...
Or telling a pretty girl that could sing that he has good news and bad news. The bad news is that she did not make it, but the good news was that she was really hot and he would like to go out with her that night.

yeah i thought the show is pretty mean but it is still kinda funny. the creator/judge guy is preety clever with his remarks. there was an older lady who sang and she had a big rack. so the guy ask her, do you know what a MILF is? the lady says Yes and then the guy said Mother Id Like to fly to hollywood! made me laugh hard.. haha. but anyways maybe those people who get one those shows deserve it. they should have read the contract saying they can be humiliated on national tv. what people are willing to do for fame...

I knew something was funky when I saw the judges. All of them are blatantly immitating the American Idol judges.

Flipping channels just now I stumbled into this show, and wouldn't know what it was about had I not seen this thread.

Now I love to sing, loudly and generally in the shower. I know I can't carry a tune in a bucket. I sing better than these people do. How can a person be so delusional that they think they have talent?

How on earth can these judges keep a straight face...

This show is mean, it's cruel, it's not even nice, but -- god help me - -I laughed.

The premise of this show sounds ok, but as has been said, it gets old very fast.
Plus, it seemed to me like all the people that were supposed to be "good" singers sounded exactly the same, pretending they had "soul". At least the "bad" singers usually tried to be original.

I too enjoy it, but I feel really bad for the singers when they find out that it's all fake. Some of them are really taking it serious and I'm worried what impact this "joke" is going to have on them.

Besides that, I thought that long haired guy actually has potential to be a good singer.

Yeah, me too. He reminded me of an Eddie Vedder kind of voice.

I am not going to watch this show. From the commercial it seems to me that all they are doing is making fun of these people and I think that it is wrong. I hated when people made fun of me when I was a kid. And it is teaching the kids that watch this show that it is fine to make fun of people. As for The Swan I don't think that show is bad? The people sign up for the show it's not like the producers go and find ugly people, and some of the people I think aren't that ugly. I am thinking about going on the show.
Anyway, back to Superstar USA, do you think these people are paid? Do you think they know what is going on? And why don't there families stop them? And I agree with the gutpunching.

These terrible singers can't be that tone deaf to actually think they sound goodcan they? I mean really maybe they should have a counselling session for these people to try and figure out why they think they can sing when obviously they blow.

On the one hand, this show is funny as hell, but on the other it's soooo mean! I'm wondering if the guy that "Wins" is going to sue or something, or end up killing himself from the humiliation. I told myself I wasn't going to watch it, but I just keep tuning in.

This show is a natural growth from the inexplicable William Hung phenomon, but that doesn't make it good or right.

Reality TV is at it's worst when it chooses to take well intentioned people and humiliate them in front of millions. It's unbelievable that any self respecting gay man, for example, would volunteer for a show like Boy Loves Boy (or whatever it's called), or that small people would sign up for that dwarf dating show on Fox.

The Swan seems well intentioned at first, but then you realize that they are taking people with zero self esteem, making them superficially "pretty", but then telling them that they still aren't good enough to be in some ludicrous beauty pageant. Heinous.

The best Reality show on TV is Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. It's the only show with an ounce of philanthropic intentions and it clearly changes people's lives. Good stuff if you can catch it on Sunday's on ABC.

I hate it, but it's like a train wreck, I can't take my eyes off it.

The producer is freaking hilarious. And the choice of judges is great, Tone Loc? What the hell has he accomplished musically? and Vitamin C?

I have a feeling it's going to turn out that the remaining few people are actors or something and the "winner" is going to be a fantastic singer at the end.

I was so sorry to see the Anglo Assassin get sent home, and the Justin Timberlake wannabe, who I still can't figure out is male or female.

But Yay for Jamie, the busty blonde who writes the lyrics to thesongs on her hand -- She'll go far!..,.

What I think is really funny, is none of the contestents have heard each other sing-- think the joke would be up then?

I think when they hear each other sing, it will only reafirm their hopes that they will end up the winners People will believe anything they want to, even if the evidence right in front of their face says otherwise.

I've missed a few episodes...

Is the guy who looked like a general dork, and danced and sung "Celebration" still on?

He was my favorite.

He's still in it -- He sang Old Time Rock and Roll last night, and the Simon wannabe judge, said he should have sung it in his tighty whities --

This has fast become my new guilty pleasure....

I gotta say it, Jamie, the blonde with the tatas is gonna go all the way -- she just slaughtered the song she sang last night - high notes that she wasn't even close to finding....

This show is so mean but think about it. I know I can't sing. I know this its not new to me. My real friends or even people I don't know tell me
" hey man you can't sing you should probably not sing in public for the good of all man kind!!"
and I think to hell with them when I am signed with a major lable the will see!

but then reality hits again. I can't sing damn them they told me the truth!!

people who can't sing know they can't,
if they are fooled this much this is their own fault.

I've been thinking. So this Jamie girl is like seventeen, right? How come there aren't any parents around? No family of any sort. Maybe that's coming in a later episode? But I dunno, the stage is so cheezy that it just makes me wonder.

Did you watch them practicing? They gave them CD player and headphones and sang along to that - -in their rooms, which looked like a motel6 or something.
