Shrek 2

This looks alright, I don't know if I want to see it or not.

Would it be a good date movie ya think? For teenagers 18+....

ironchef82 05-18-2004 06:55 PM

Yeah, it's probably a pretty safe bet for a date movie. Looks like it'll be pretty funny.

Sleepyjack 05-18-2004 07:32 PM

They normally have sexual innuendo and connatations in there which entertain the parents (or older folk who guy) who take their kids to the movie. The kids don't normally pick up on these things.

In the first one, i believe they had several jokes about phallic symbols about the knight who had a bit of a Napolean/small man complex. This is purely there for the older crowd, thats why these types of movies (toy story, nemo etc) are so good, a bit for everyone :D

Mr.Deflok 05-18-2004 10:09 PM

I loathed the first one, it has got to be the most overrated film of all time. And to think Monsters Inc lost out to it at the Oscars that year.../rage

Kadath 05-19-2004 05:10 AM

Could they cross-market it with any more products, for fuck's sake? This must be some sort of record.

Well, Lord Farquaad of Duloc was said to be named after "fuckwad", altered just enough to make it not a profanity. I think he also might have been modeled after Eisner, or perhaps someone else at Disney.

-Couldn't agree more!!

Redjake 05-19-2004 09:29 PM

apparently Shrek 2 is better or at least as good as the first. Rottentomatoes.com has the story :) 92% I believe. that's damn good (for RT). a couple of rehashed quotes from the critics:

"one of the best comedies ever made"
"better than the first"
"just as good as of sequel as Toy Story 2 was to Toy Story"
"has, at one part, the funniest sequence of film ever made in it"
"I hated the first, I hate the second"

I think it's gonna be good. really good. I liked the first one, but hated how it was hyped up (it wasn't THAT good guys). and how it was so overplayed everywhere. but I'll definitely go see this one.

Omar12 05-19-2004 10:34 PM

I saw it today and its a great movie, as good or even better than the first one.

The story is great, I loved the story.

Funny as hell, I was laughing the whole movie.

3d animation - they were showing off on this one, they did more advanced stuff than the first, more amazing shots, an amazing job.

Great movie.

bundy 05-19-2004 10:49 PM

i just really hope this film makes more than $220mil... thats all i care about.

qtpye4u84 05-20-2004 03:08 AM

I want to see it.
I think it will be funny.
Shreks a dirty guy though kinda grosses me out.

Exactly!! Actually, I don't know if I loathed the first one, but I really didn't understand what all the hype was about. I'll pass on Shrek 2...I doubt I'll even bother to see it on video.

Charlatan 05-20-2004 07:58 AM

I avoided the hype of Shrek 1... I eventually saw it on video and was pleasantly surprised with the film. Better than I imagined it would be.

My son and I went to see Shrek 2 last night... It was good. I had more than a few good laughs and had fun playing spot the reference...

The animation was awesome.

I'd say it's an entertaining movie and worth seeing it in the theatre if animated films are your thing (especially if you liked Shrek 1).

Ace_O_Spades 05-22-2004 01:51 AM

oh my shit... i saw this movie tonight, and seriously didn't stop laughing the entire time... haha so many jokes that only older people would get, simply because younger audiences wont get the material they are referring to... classic! God I loved it

bltzkriegmcanon 05-22-2004 04:43 AM

Two words. Better graphics. The CG in this movie is far better (to no one's surprise) than the original. There are parts where the people look fuckin' real. Much, much more detailed animation.

On the humor end, it seems to me that they tried really hard to cram a lot of references into the last 15-30 minutes of the film, so many that it's hard to keep track of them or "get" them at the time. I had forgotten how many references could be packed into a 93 minute movie. Thank God for bittorrent.

lionrock 05-22-2004 07:23 AM

I noticed a trend in children or family movies lately. Pack in as many references to other films as possible. Just because you can re-create an image from another movie, does not automatically make it funny.
I loved Shrek, and liked Shrek 2, but the pop culture references are pretty much non stop. I think some of the funniest stuff is the timeless humor

Next paragraph has a few spoilers.

(Pinnochio's nose growing with his lies, becoming a real boy, Larry King as the stepsister "Why the long face?", and the whole puss in boots character.)

No more spoilers from here down.

I just wonder if the quick barrage of movie and tv scenes will still be funny in 10 years. I know Nemo will stand the test of time, as will Toy Story.

Not to say I didn't enjoy it, but I don't think it lived up to the hype, or more importantly it's potential.

Gjefflin 05-22-2004 08:50 AM

Loved it loved it LOVED IT! And the graphics are absolutely amazing!!!

Amethyst 05-22-2004 11:13 AM

Gjefflin since you have seen it I will ask you is it appropriate for children. I let my kids watch the first one and I sometimes wish I hadn't. Kids pick up on things more than you think they will.

Lacjack 05-22-2004 01:18 PM

Amesthyst, there are about the same about of ineuendo's as the first, none are to obvious (well the pinochio thing is..but other then that) so it's a judgement call for you, i think it's fine for children, and the theatre was packed with them, even at 9:30pm

Peryn 05-22-2004 03:37 PM

Just got back from it.... loved it. It was a blast to watch, and a bunch of little kids made it that much more enjoyable. For the most part, if they are old enough to understand the innuendo, then they are old enough that its not innapropriate.

There is some .... "underwear humor" if you will, that the little ones will understand and laugh about. Its probably the worst part, but still ok.

Baldrick 05-22-2004 04:13 PM

I enjoyed Shrek, but didn't like Shrek 2 much at all. There were a couple of good "gags", but overall I thought the movie fell flat. Prince Charming and Puss 'n Boots were both great, but I think alot of the charm of the first one was that you were seeing the fairy tale characters you grew up with in a new light! Not much of that here - I guess that's the same for most sequels though.

The animation was so good, it was downright creepy though! I swear, there was a couple of scenes I had to look twice to see if they used real people/animals! :)

But for the love of all that's holy, could they have crammed more product placement in? I was actually getting frustrated at one point. I heard that alot of companies paid a small fortune to get "noticed" in Shrek, but this was ridiculous. Everything from The Gap, to Burger King, to Starbucks were there. I felt like I was watching an animated James Bond movie after a while.

I've put that theory to the test, it's true. We were both laughing pretty much the whole way through, and a great time was had by all.
I did notice the excessive product placements, but at least they had the decency to give the companies funny, medeival-sounding names. And I particularly liked Spoiler: When the giant gingerbread man crushes a 'Farbucks' and all the customers flee to the other 'Farbucks' across the street.

gduventree 05-24-2004 12:30 PM

I saw the movie and enjoyed it. While it lacked the fairy-tale satire that made the first movie so enjoyable, the characters are what made this one standout.

By the way, was there anything else at the end after the credits finished rolling? I didn't stay long enough to see.

Delvid 05-25-2004 08:59 AM

Looks like a must see. I liked Shrek. Funny for me and the kids.

Ace_O_Spades 05-25-2004 09:15 AM

Yes there was something extra... it's worth sticking around for

punx1325 05-25-2004 05:25 PM

I saw it and loved it. It was really funny and for all ages.

KellyC 05-25-2004 07:08 PM

I saw it, like it, but didn't love it
