The Exorcist

This film still holds up as one of the most frightening ever. I was just reading some dialouge from the film, and it was giving me the creeps.

Regan: What an excellent day for an exorcism.
Karras: You would like that?
Regan: Intensely.
Karras: But wouldn't that drive you out of Regan?
Regan: It would bring us together.
Karras: You and Regan?
Regan: You and us.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Regan: I'm not Regan.
Karras: Well, then let's introduce ourselves. I'm Damien Karras.
Regan: And I'm the Devil! Now kindly undo these straps!
Karras: If you're the Devil, why don't you make the straps disappear?
Regan: That's much too vulgar a display of power, Karras!

sure is! I've seen it 3 times and I'm never going to see it ever again.

It is a frightening film. I have been meaning to start reading the exorcist novels which I'm sure will be 10x better.

The Excorcist prequel they filmed apparently wasn't scary enough so they've gone back and started filming again with a new director.

The book of the exorcist is actually really good. Not only is it scary as hell, there a lot more exposition, detail and back story, which just makes everything all the more disturbing.

I read that somewhere too. I think the idea was to get another director to shoot some different scenes, but now they are pretty much reshotting the whole film.

Don't mean to sound like a troll or anything, but I honestly can't understand for the life of me why people think this movie is scary (other than those who saw it when they were 6-7 years old when it was released back in '73)... and I'm a HUGE fan of all horror (provided it's actually scary).

Do you have to be strictly religious to find this frightening, or am I missing something here? I just find it odd that this is hailed as a perfect work of horror, yet ... there's nothing remotely scary about it (to me).

It's not that I have a problem suspending disbelief, because IMO, Aliens is as unreal as you can get, yet it's more frightening than The Exorcist, so I don't know what it is. Maybe it's just not my thing.. maybe I missed the boat on this one

[edit]
That dialogue that was posted, for example, I find nothing remotely terrifying about it. I know the exact scene in which it happens, but... yeah, does nothing for me ( and trust me, I'd love nothing more than to have the crap scared out of me by a movie)

I also didn't think this was scary. I imagine that it probably would have scared the shit out of me if I had seen when it first came out. I also guess that I would find it scarier if I were religious, which I'm not. I thought the Exorcist was a good movie, but not scary at all.

I think what makes people get into this movie is that fact that cases, although rare do exist. It is possible to be invaded by someone or something other than yourself. That is creepy. Sure, it is possible to get slashed, or cut up with a chain saw like other horror flicks. Check out the documentary behind this story, the amount of strength that this 13yr old boy had was unhuman.

I have to admit to laughing my way through this film.

Oh, and I don't believe in possesion for a second. I can only assume that the only people who found this film scary are those who believe in such things.
