Starship Troopers

Man this has to be one of the best movies ever. I love it. The reasons:

1. The violence. That's good stuff. You can tell Paul did it (Robocop, Total Recall). I love the over-the-top stuff. It's just ridiculous and funny.

2. The "commercials" and "Would you like to know more?" links. That cracks me up every time. Especially the "do YOUR part!" kids stomping the cockroaches as the mom goes apeshit clapping.

3. The soundtrack. Only soundtrack that rivals this is Armageddon. PERFECT "summer movie, going to beat ass and possibly die while we're at it" songs during the movie.

4. All the actors/actresses are little miss perfects. Even the guys. It makes me laugh really hard. And how can you get any more perfect than Michael Ironside? I mean Jesus.

5. The underlying messages that are BLATANTLY obvious in the movie. It's basically portraying how the world would be if Hitler won World War II. You have to fight in the war to be a Citizen And the generals and commanders and stuff wear SS gear for cryin' out loud!

6. Very good computer graphics. Only a small part of the movie looks bad now. The graphics are better than most action/sci-fi movies nowadays, and it came out in 1997. I love it.

Any other fans of this awesome movie???

decent movie by itself. When compared to the book it is a stinking pile of shit that completely dumbs down very smart bugs and trivializes the powerful storyline.
But it does have very good effects in any event.

With the exception of points #2, 6 and the subpoint of Michael Ironsides, I couldn't disagree more. I can't stand this movie at all, although I guess I can see how people enjoy it. Probably has something to do with reading ST when I was 11 for the first time, and loving it dearly.

yep. I think it's doing straight-to-DVD or something though. or coming packaged with a similar product (videogame or something like that). sounds like a bad idea.

Makes me wonder if it got scrapped or not?

As a friend of mine told me when he was trying to get me to read the book and see the movie, you have to take them as seperate entities. The book is basically about political theories in a sci-fi setting, while the movie is your basic summer sci-fi blockbuster with the basic outline taken from the book.

Taken seperately the movie is great. Taken together, and it's a different story.

Ha ha, I had no idea that the movie was based on a book. I bet it really fuckin sucks for the people that read the book. A pretty funny movie, but only if taken from the viewpoint that the director and basically everyone in the movie knew it was a big joke.

I found Tivo'd it and watched the first 30 minutes of it. I had some high hopes for it because Phil Tippet was involved. Well, he was the director. But it sucked. I liked the first movie very much in fact I watch it at work all the time.

according to imdb.com it was slated for a direct to TV release in April 2004.

Starship Troopers 2 was horrible. The only good thing about it was that the hot blond from Nip/Tuck gets naked in it.

Just remembered, if anyone is interested in seeing more, Roughnecks is great, probably likable for fans of the movie and book alike. It's a cg cartoon, you can get them all on dvd/netflix.

I always loved Starship Troopers, fucking excellent as a B-movie homage. One badass movie Redjake, but your post reminded me of something Jim Gaffigan said(a pretty funny stand up comedian):

"Don't you hate when you see an old movie for the first time and you really like it? It sucks cause you can't really talk to people about it.....
Hey man I just saw Heat!!!!
--Heat? Man I saw that six years ago.
Yeah, well I wanna talk about it now.
--No, loser."

Couldn't help but be reminded of that, and yes, I realize that you are a longtime fan of the movie and just felt like singing some overdue praise. It just reminded me of that quote, which I thought I would share.

.......

I'm so alone.

I enjoyed the hell out of Starship Troopers, both the book and the movie.
(wish they would have had the battlesuits in the movie)

Yup, most of Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation was bad.
They even brought back one of the actresses that died in the first film. Wtf?
Except for the ending, the only parts I liked were the so-so fight scenes and the nudity.

Richard Burgi (Captain Dax) was a believable anti-hero, though. (best known for the lead character in the Sci-fi series, "The Sentinel")

Whenever I know a movie is based on a book, and I've read neither, I always watch the movie first, that way I'm not disappointed if I really love the book, and then the movie is a letdown

visa versa, if the movie is really bad, and the book is really good, I can take solace in the fact I have another awesome book to read

if they both suck... fuck them both

hate to say it, but I loved the book- it made sense in a lot of ways, and I could not even buy the movie at all- it was just a very stupid testosterone fest lacking even the elements of a good action movie- it just did not make sense as a sci fi war movie- I mean, in the book, the troopers had power suits, and were in essence their own tanks, air support, artillery, all in one- they were shot directly from orbit to the planet to be assaulted, and then proceeded to whump ass and then be picked up by the dropships- and half the book was training, like full metal jacket only worse- the warfare methods depicted in the movie did not even make sense- air support that they never use, no tanks- WTF- i guess that the reason that i so disliked it is that I could not suspend my disbelief due to the above glaring flaws- I figure you can get away with anything in a movie if you set it up well enough- but in this one they did not even bother- I saw it in the theatre and had high hopes, so that certainly hurt me- It would have worked much better as a starcraft movie-

This was the only movie that has ever elicited the following comment to me:

"Hey man, you ok? You're looking pretty green."

I was somehow seriously bothered by this film. But I love it all the same.
