The Ring scared me a lot, and Halloween scared me but i was 7 when i saw it

warrrreagl 05-13-2003 06:35 AM

It may not be the scariest movie I've ever seen, but "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" could certainly rock my world when I was a kid.

XenuHubbard 05-13-2003 08:28 AM

Some favourites:

Ringu, and the same director's "Dark Water".

Another cool Japanese horror film is "Hypnosis". It's wierd, but
I strongly recommend it.

Otherwise I actually like the Dark Castle films. They're not classy or original, but they're perfect popcorn-films.

I'm really getting sick of all the sudden "cat-in-the-closet"-effects nowadays. A sudden loud noise just kills the mood in a horror film. It just makes me sit there and wait for the next loud noise.

Thraeryn 05-14-2003 07:16 AM

Wow. I can't remember the last movie I was truly scared by. <u>Darkness Falls</u> took advantage of my lingering fear of the dark; there are times even now when I feel like opening my eyes at night and don't, fearing what I'll see.

<u>Event Horizon</u> is pretty disturbing, but only somewhat scary.

What I'd really LIKE to see is a good film retelling of one of the <u>Ringu</u> stories/sequels, in which a single man is alone in a world of Sadakos. THAT would be scary. (<u>Ringu</u> is good, by the way; you simply can't listen to all the hype. The more you read about the back-story and the original novels, the better it gets.)

The first time I saw Poltergeist
The first time I saw Evil Dead
Prince of darkness anytime I watch it
And for a week after watching the ring I couldn't sleep if there was a TV left on anywhere in the house.

Event Horizon and Twelve Monkeys

Has anyone got the DVD of Event Horizon and paused it on the snapshots that get flashed up - to see what actually happening?

Part of the scariness is that they flash up so quick it's just enough to get your mind playing tricks on you and your imagination going on what you just saw :)

DogFart20 05-15-2003 04:17 PM

scariest movie for me pooti tang "shudders"

Dr.Who 05-17-2003 12:47 PM

The Ring, japan version. I saw at a theatre couple of years ago at a festival in Montreal and it was creapy as heel.

Blair Witch project, cause I saw a pirate version way before the movie came to theatre.

Jinger 05-17-2003 02:10 PM

I have just realised that I have seen very few scary movies. Did see The Exorcist and Poltergeist -Yikes, both freaked me out.

Exorcist was the first scary movie I ever saw, I think that is why I think of it as the scariest, that initial freak factor.

Might have to check out some of the above mentioned flics now that my curiousity is peaked.

Tophat665 05-17-2003 02:47 PM

Barney's Great Adventure.

Lasereth 05-17-2003 07:50 PM

Definitely The Shining.

-Lasereth

ThatOnePerson 05-18-2003 02:33 AM

I still think the original texas chainsaw massacre is THE scariest movie EVER. but a close second would be the black n white night of the living dead. it rocks too.

KeyserSoze 05-18-2003 09:33 PM

The Shining was the scariest by far........especially the bathtub seen.

I also still think The Hitcher with Rutger Hauer and C. Thomas Howell was the best suspense/scary movie ever made, but not too many people have seen it.............AWESOME FILM!!

-Ever- 05-18-2003 10:18 PM

im getting spooked just reading over all these scary movies :( :shit, what was that..?: :D

Jerry Manderine 05-19-2003 03:06 AM

I don't really get too scared by too many movies; "Society" really turned my stomach inside out though! On sheer mutant horror "Class of Nuke'm High" is both very funny and pretty gross. As far as scary concepts... the Japanese filck "Battle Royale" is pretty thought provoking in a terrifying way - can't wait for the sequel.

XenuHubbard 05-19-2003 03:15 AM

I'm extremely happy that people mentioned Battle Royale, The Hitcher and Society here...

Rutger Hauer is the King.

ThatOnePerson 05-19-2003 11:17 AM

oh i also forgot to mention C.H.U.D. that one gave me nightmares when i was a kid. the ring 2 and the other sequals to it suck, they weren't scary at all, they just get progressivly worse and more sci fi than horror. sorry, just my opinion...

Bonesaw 05-19-2003 04:55 PM

Xenu: I forgot about The Hitcher. Not only is that a pretty scary movie but it was visually very beautiful. Lots a great desolate landscape shots.

cub4life78 05-20-2003 06:59 AM

Another vote here for the ring...

Could you please point out the Science Fiction parts to Ring 2 because I must have missed them.
Granted it's not a patch on the original, but the little boy in it makes the film for me. He did a great job imo, really built up the atmosphere and he didnt even say anything. Well he did a little bit, but not much.
Ring 0 is pretty bad, but really only because it drags out and very little happens. It's pretty boring, but it gives an insight to Sadako's life, which is just interesting enough to get you through the film. All my opinion of course.

ironman 05-23-2003 11:21 AM

weīre leaving out many movies:
1.- The Others specially when you (and them) havenīt realized they all are dead

2.- Stiring Echoes when kevin bacon sits in the couch and the girl is standing right next to him, it makes me jump every time i watch it

3.- Nightmare on Elmīs Street A TOTAL CLASSIC, i specially recall this scene where this girl runs searching for help and then she realizes sheīs running back in time again and again, it puts you right on the edge of a total breakdown!

Though, Event Horizon scared the shit out of me, the shinning was good but it really didnīt scared me, but i surely laugh when the guy with the pig custome is sucking on a nude dude.
When i first saw the exorcist (i was 8), i couldnīt sleep with the lights off for about a year.
Finally, sice i saw The Sixth Sense, i freak out every time i feel cold and shiver when iīm alone.

brandon11983 05-24-2003 08:32 AM

the ring...zzzz... i was extremely disappointed.

poltergeist.. scared the shit out of me. first saw it when i was 10 or so, with the lights out... still freaks me out to this day.

Oh, Man- remember that clown... I never looked at a clown doll the same ever again!

messy 05-24-2003 02:39 PM

Speaking of clowns...

"It" (Stephen King) is #1 on my charts. The first time I watched it, there's a part in the movie when the power goes out...my power actually went out 2 seconds after that.

Whenever I see on TiVo that it's playing... I avoid it. Don't even want to catch a glimpse of that friggin clown.

ishkeb 05-24-2003 03:20 PM

My vote is for the exorcist. While I was watching it, I thought it was funny, but that night I was the most frightened I have ever been. I also agree with the guy somewhere up above that said Silent Hill is scarier than any recent movie. The horror video games are very scary, because you're rapped up inside of them, and it's much harder to distance yourself from it and tell yourself
"it's not real."

WinterScar 05-24-2003 03:27 PM

I must say that The Eye is probably the scariest movie I've seen so far. There are a lot of great horror movies coming out of Asia lately. Kaïro, Dark Water, The Eye, Ringu, etc.

ninety09 05-24-2003 04:27 PM

Poltergeist gave me many nightmares when I was younger..

Nocturnal 05-25-2003 01:05 AM

A movie that scared the crap out of me when I was a kid was a movie called "The Last Man On Earth" (or something similar). Others that scared me shitless when I was a kid (in no particular order) were Evil Dead, Deadly Blessing and Salem's Lot.

did ya know that Tim Curry plays the part of the evil Clown in "IT"... he also played "Darkness" in the Movie- Legend.

urgodhere 05-25-2003 10:56 AM

i would have to say Omen, Exorsist, and The Shining. Wholly crap...when i was little i thought that I could handle them. I thought wrong. Nightmares continued for weeks.

retg34 05-27-2003 07:34 AM

A movie called Ghost Story. Also, Jaws. I still wont go in the water.

Podmore 05-27-2003 02:12 PM

The Exorcist scared the heck out of me when I was a kid. I rewatched it mroe recently and thought most of it aged badly and wasn't as scary now (mostly because it's so obviously fake compared to today's special effects). The Shining also scared me as a kid, and still scares me today. I think it's aged better.

harry 05-29-2003 03:52 AM

Definitely "The Exorcist". I saw it for the first time when I was 12 years or so, and I have a vague feeling that it might have done quite some damage to my young psyche. Just thinking of that voice used to scare the shit out of me and I had recurring nightmares about being obsessed myself.

Also it has spoiled the genre for me, because in comparison all other horror movies are at best entertaining or, wich is more often the case, ridiculous and pathetic.

thephoenix 05-29-2003 03:38 PM

My vote goes to The Shining. I watched it without knowing much of anything about it, and it started at around midnight. My brother and I watched it (we were 16 and 17 or so) and were so scared neither of us said a single word through the whole movie. I stayed up for another full hour watching Sportscenter to try to get my mind straight again.

Another one that has only gotten one mention is The Blair Witch Project. It's the kind of thing where you love it or you hate it, and I loved it. Totally freaked me out.

Rosemary's Baby had its moments but overall I wasn't impressed. Too slow. Although whoever mentioned the tension was right - it was tense the whole way through. Just not tense enough for me, or not enough payoff or something. <shrug>

One other scary thing I saw recently was Sofia Coppolla's performance in Godfather III. Frighteningly bad.

Cujo 05-29-2003 07:54 PM

While I agree with The Shining and The Exorsist, I don't think I was ever so frightened by a movie as I was when I was 11 and watched Salem's Lot. That movie had me sleeping with the lights on for weeks. Scared the shit outta me. My parents took my TV out of my room for months because of it.

On the bright side though, I don't think I would have discovered Stephen King without having seen that movie. The guy is a horror genius.

silverback 06-02-2003 10:32 PM

"The Changeling" with George C. Scott is my favorite ghost story. It will scare you without all the blood and gore.

Sun Tzu 06-03-2003 07:32 AM

Jaws has damaged me when Im in salt water diving. Especially when on the surface and the visibility is bad.

"Ghost Story" was taken from Peter Straub's novel by the same name, and if you thought the movie was scary...SHIT! The book will nearly ruin the rest of your life; you'll never be the same. You have to respect a book that begins with the following line; "What's the worst thing I've ever done? I won't tell you that, but I will tell you the worst thing that's ever happened to me."

Chills, chills, chills......

Also, after "Jaws," every crab, rock, and empty can I stepped on in the ocean instantly became a killer great white shark.

Are you serious about the "The Others" that was one of the most boring, pieces of crap, I had ever seen. What is scary about that.
Here's some freaky movies to check out.

The Last House on the Left - First Wes Craven flick

How about some Itailian Horror: New York Ripper!!! -Fantastic
Susperia! - Now thats cool cool shit!

But ones that really scare me the most!!! Crossroads and Glitter!! j/k!!!

Later,

V.
