Best Movie Characters of All Time

Here's a list from Premiere of the 100 Best Characters of All Time.

http://www.premiere.com/article.asp?...page_number=12

I didn't agree with a lot of it, so how about we put our top ten (in no particular order). You don't even have to like the movie! Just put your favorite characters. Some movies suck but had an awesome character.

Mine are:

Beatrix Kiddo (Kill Bill) - Uma Thurman
Private Joker (Full Metal Jacket) - Matthew Modine
Elwood Blues (The Blues Brothers) - Dan Akroyd
T-1000 (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) - Robert Patrick
Tony Montana (Scarface) - Al Pacino
Wyatt (Easy Rider) - Peter Fonda
Jack Torrance (The Shining) - Jack Nicholson
David Della Rocco (The Boondock Saints) - David Della Rocco
The Dude (The Big Lebowski) - Jeff Bridges
Tyler Durden (Fight Club) - Brad Pitt

EDIT*********************

Here's some more I agree with.
Agent Smith (The Matrix trilogy) - Hugo Weaving
Ash (Evil Dead trilogy) - Bruce Campbell
Budd (Kill Bill series) - Michael Madsen
Han Solo (Star Wars) - Harrison Ford
El (Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico) - Antonio Banderas
Agent Sands (Once Upon a Time in Mexico) - Johnny Depp

0) -> Harry Lime - AKA The Third Man as Portrayed by Orson Welles in the 1950 film. The character was fleshed out some in the superb radio show in '52 also starring George Orson Welles.
1) -> Bette Davis in The Little Foxes; excellent portrayal of the negative effects of someone placing high-profile business (the family in the film was at least $400K in 1900 if memory serves) before everything else including family. Excellent prequel as well set during the war between the states showing how the only daughter of the family gained control.
2) -> Charlie Chaplin in his numerous portrayals of 'The Tramp' character
3) -> W.C. Fields playing the lovable usually drunk scoundrel/petty crook (pretty much all of his films)
4) -> Brigitte Helm playing the robot in the oft-copied groundbreaking Fritz Lang masterpiece Metropolis
5) -> Archibald "Cary Grant" Leach playing Mortimer Brewster in the timeless Arsenic and Old Lace - he showcases his full incredibly flexible range (and Priscilla Lane is damn fine too).
6) -> Humphrey Bogart setting the standard for the Film Noir genre with movies like The Maltese Falcon and the The Big Sleep
7) -> Barbara Stanwyck playing the treacherous vixen and using Fred McMurray as the dupe in Double Indemnity

might think of more later, those are just off the top of my head, and I did try to think of someone later than 1950.
edit: thought of some more. might try to do a list of characters after 1950 or so but most of my focus musically and in films is <1955.

I have seen two of those and liked one of them, that would be The Matrix before watching too many times* made me just plain sick of it

*no doubt due to being stuck in the middle of the Atlantic and sitting in a berthing with little else to do where it was played at least 10-20 times in the course of one week.

I'm glad somebody finally mentioned him. A great job by Kevin Spacey.

Off the top of my head, here are some notable characters from the '60s and earlier:

The Fat Man in "The Maltese Falcon" (Sydney Greenstreet)

Frankenstein in the movie of the same name (Boris Karloff).

Dracula (Bela Lugosi), again in the movie of the same name.

"Scarface Tommy Udo" in "Kiss of Death" -- Richard Widmark as the prototype for all drug-addict psycho-killers in all movies thereafter.

Klaatu in "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (Michael Rennie). "Klaatu Barrada Nicto!"

Major "King" Kong in "Dr. Strangelove" (Slim Pickens). He's the bomber pilot who rides the H-bomb down to ground zero!

Captain Queeg in "The Caine Mutiny" (Humphrey Bogart). All those great rants, including the one about who stole his strawberries. And the way he clicked ball bearings in one hand when he was about to lose it.

Professor Quatermass in "The Quatermass Experiment" and "Quatermass 2." (Brian Donlevy). Before Quatermass, all scientists in the movies were either mad or nice old duffers with beautiful daughters. Quatermass was "good," sort of, but also a cold-blooded bastard who'd do anything to get a rocket into space.

The actors John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Spencer Tracy (and the comedians W.C. Fields and the Marx Brothers) basically played the same character in every movie they ever made, so they are actors who also count as "characters." You can say the same thing about Bruce Willis, pretty much.

Oh yes, Charles' Laughton's "Hunchback of Notre Dame" in the original sound picture of the same name. A great part.
