For me, it's a toss up between Joel Coen (of the Coen Brothers) and Woody Allen. I'm also tempted to add Terry Gilliam to that list. I'd probably add M. Night Shyamalan, too, if he had made more movies...

Woo! Someone who likes old movies! (Speed_Gibson)
Anyways: Big fan of Charlie Chaplin, I like Orson Welles, John Ford if only for the Quiet Man, and, in terms of Great Cinematography + Sweet Epic = David Lean. Made them better than WhathisFace Peter Jackson any day of the week. Most other newer directors (post 1975) seem to use cheap tricks to lure the audience into thinking the movie is something better than it is (except in the case of the Original Original Star Wars, which I can never seem to get enough of.) Watch a good classic is like reading book. Just better.

Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in each of their pints. The Englishman pushed his beer away in disgust. The Scotsman fished the fly out of his beer and continued drinking it, as if nothing had happened. The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!" |
