I read an article today saying that the Kill Bill Vol.1 DVD (that comes out tomorrow) isn't worth it at all. They say it has just 1 crappy "behind the scenes" featurette and that's it! I guess they are saving all the stuff for a likely double pack with Vol. 2?

Here's what the DVDTalk.com review had to say about it:

"A spectacular joyride of a half-film, Kill Bill Volume 1 is a definite oddity on DVD. Feeling more incomplete than ever, now that we're so close to the release of its second half, the film kinda seems to just sit there on DVD. Buena Vista's nearly barebones treatment should give you pause. Is this release worth picking up? Barely—at least, when you consider, as mentioned above, the inevitable 3- or 4-disc set. But how will you be able to deny the impulse to purchase this DVD? The movie is that much fun, and imminently rewatchable. Beware, though: The image quality is a bit of a bummer, particularly on large screens."

I read about the Kill Bill dvd "situation" on Ain't It Cool's website. I looked but couldn't find a link for that article anymore:/ I can tell you what I know though. Apparently Tarantino was still working on stuff for Kill Bill Vol. 2 and didn't have a lot of time to put a lot of effort into the DVD extras for Kill Bill Vol. 1.

What he said, though, is that he is going to cut the two movies together (not just play them back to back) and release that version in the theaters and then put that on DVD and release it with a lot of DVD extras.

I got an Academy screener of Vol I. Just the film, no extras, and I've watched it four or five times in the past few months. It doesn't seem as epic as it did on the big screen, but it's still a good film.

Then again, I'm the kind of guy who buys DVD's because they make the films look good, not because they inlcude a bunch of extras.

80% of the time I don't even watch the features more than once, but it's just the principle of the matter. This day in age, DVDs like this should not be released. Throw together some goddamn special features.

I personally could care less about the special features. I mean they are obviously a pleasant surprise, but if I want to buy a DVD I will buy it because I like the movie, and want to watch it. Not because of the SF. And in this case I want to go buy the Kill Bill dvd, because I like the movie, and want to see it.

The article I saw on Vol. 3 wasn't for a prequel, it was to tell the story of Vernita Green's little girl seeking revenge on the Bride for killing her mother.

It might stall a Vol. 1&2 box set, but it won't affect the individual releases of either Vols. 1 or 2. I expect Vol. 2 to come out individually sometime this fall.

If there's a Vol. 3, it most likely won't even begin production until at least the end of the year.

alright kids. rented the dvd. for whatever you're willing to pay, you get:

the movie

a couple music videos from the 5,6,7,8's (the girls who were rocking out in the diner before the crazy 88's fight)

a making-of featurette that consists of quentin talking about how great he is, uma talking about how great quentin is, and a basic intro to the other players we met in volume 1, along with minimal behind the scenes footage and on-location footage, all superseded by quentin in goofy asian shirts.

some trailers for quentin's old movies, a couple for volume 1, and a minimal teaser for volume 2.

i didn't check for director's commentary, i couldn't stand listening to quentin talk that much. the fucker is very full of himself.

that's pretty much it. not alot left to it, so if you feel you -must- have the movie in your collection, pick it up. otherwise, rent it, watch it, then go watch volume 2 on friday and giggle in anticipation of the release of a real set with real extras.

Man, after seeing Quentin Tarantino on American Idol and on Howard Stern tonight, combined with phredgreen's post, I'm rethinking my decision to not buy this. I just remembered that for the most part I can't stand that man. He really is way too full of himself. He makes good movies, but Christ is he annoying!

Maybe I'll be able to restrict myself to just renting it, but eitherway, I'm going to have to see this movie again soon.

Yes this comes out in UK on monday. Was looking forward 2 this, will wait after reading about it in magazines etc. Looks like bare bones disc. Prob sp ed once vol2 due for release will be full of extras.

I went ahead and bought this movie the day it was released, I am a little disappointed wit the lack of special features, I thought it'd be a doudle disk also since there was so much into making this film. I think I'll just keep this version and then go rent the special edition when it comes out on dvd, Im not too much for actor/actress interviews but I would like to see a directors commentary and the whole story behind the anime scene.

When I received my first DVD player for Christmas in 2001, I did what anyone with such a spanking new high-tech toy would do: I immediately dashed out and bought an armload of my favorite movies on disc. I started with "Blazing Saddles," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," and "The Great Escape," and by the time 2001 turned into 2002, I had also picked up "Enter the Dragon," "Amadeus," and Akira Kurosawa's "Ran."

I've spent the years since replacing those early acquisitions with newfangled DVD versions of the same movies. As a DVD novice, it never occurred to me that the studios would release multiple versions of the same film.

And I don't just mean full-screen versus wide-screen (letterboxed) formats. I refer to the irritating, increasing tendency of the ever-rapacious movie industry to make a big deal out of releasing a hotly awaited film on DVD, and then months, sometimes years later putting out another version of that movie that's tricked-out with features. Collector's editions give way to special editions, limited editions are replaced by ultimate versions -- all with the intention of wringing more dollars out of consumers.

On the first day of its DVD release, "Kill Bill Vol. 1," Quentin Tarantino's ultraviolent, ultrastylish revenge orgy starring Uma Thurman, sold 2 million copies and made a whopping $40 million. Customers snapping up this fairly bare-bones disc -- in addition to the film, there's only a making-of documentary, a "Vol. 2" trailer, and video from the Japanese all-girl band the 5.6.7.8's, who perform in the film -- probably did so expecting a later version featuring both parts of the film. ("Kill Bill Vol. 2" recently opened in theaters.) But what customers buying the disc didn't know was that Miramax is actually planning six different DVD releases of the "Kill Bill" films.

Here's how Rick Sands, Miramax's chief operating officer, explained it to The New York Times last week:

" `Vol. 1' goes out, `Vol. 2' goes out, then `Vol. 1 Special Edition,' `Vol. 2 Special Edition,' the two-pack, then the Tarantino collection as a boxed set for Christmas," he said. "It's called multiple bites at the apple."

The apple ain't the only thing getting bitten.

It may have taken the studios a few years to recognize the public's embrace of DVDs, but now they're clearly focused on greedily exploiting that desire as much as possible. Studios can now spend as much promoting a film on DVD as for its theatrical run, and the financial benefits can quickly become a bonanza. And movie executives understand that someone willing to buy a movie they've probably already paid $10 to see in a theater wants the best available version of a beloved film. (This is why "The Lord of the Rings" fans who bought the two-disc versions of the first two films turned right around and bought the extended four-disc box sets at twice the price.)

See, it's never been just the much-improved quality of the picture and sound on DVDs that makes them so hot. It's all those cool extras such as full-length commentary tracks from cast and crew members, deleted scenes, outtakes, and behind-the-scenes documentaries. Some also offer interviews with stars and directors on programs such as "Charlie Rose" or appearances from film festivals. Save being on a movie set, it's the most comprehensive way to fully experience a favorite film.

If the studios wanted to be fair (and, of course, there's no indication that they would even know how), they would take their cues from the Criterion Collection, generally recognized as the gold standard for DVD releases. The collection features films from the world's great directors such as Kurosawa, Federico Fellini, and Alfred Hitchcock, and its releases are lovingly restored and usually enhanced with multiple special features. Criterion DVDs tend to be more expensive -- a typical two-disc set runs about $40 -- but it seems worth it because these releases tend to be definitive versions. And Criterion avoids such meaningless terms as "collector's edition" or "special edition," meant to lure customers believing they are getting something extra.

Studio suits would do well to remember the hard lessons learned by the record industry. As CD prices inexplicably increased year after year, some fans turned to peer-to-peer downloading services such as Kazaa and the then-illegal Napster for their music fix. The music industry has been crying foul ever since and suing the very people it wants to purchase its product.

With the "Kill Bill Vol. 1" disc selling so well on its debut day, the studios probably believe they have a green light to continue abusing their customers -- "Hey, no one's making them buy those DVDs," they probably reason. Yet it seems only a matter of time before the public's love of DVDs is poisoned with anger at the studios for exploiting that love for more and more money.

I bought a few special edition discs when i first got DVD enabled, thinking my experience would not be complete without a bunch of extra crap. I have never ever watched an extra feature on any of the discs, i dunno why.

As soon as I realised i wasn't bothering to watch the shit, I stopped buying it. I just go for bog standard movies. I am not enough of a connoisseur to notice things like picture quality and sound and stuff, i am there for the story and the dialogue.

and if people pay once for a movie, then are stupid enough to fall for industry bullshit and buy it again, then i have no sympathy when they complain. that article is whining like the writer is under some kind of compulsion to buy these extra sets.

I have been thinking of at least renting the movie. No real idea what is about beside 'girl gets married, shot in the head (read that on the DVD jacket at Walmart), endures comatose rape, then gets revenge' Reading all of the spoiler threads with completely foreign characters with odd names has not mean anything to me so far.

just watched the DVD.
viewed simplistically and incorrectly as a straight action film - it stinks. If part two is much heavier on dialogue with decent plot development then it has to be better, or at least I can hope.

my overall view - passable. The best part for me seeing that beautiful fine blade and Uma Thurman. Everything else was pretty much forgettable, and the big fight scene did nothing for me at all in any sense beside make me wonder how much better it would have been without it. A good rental but not something I would watch in the theatre or buy unless it was a cheap bargain bin/previously viewed DVD.
Mildy curious about the sequel but can wait until it hits the video store and leaves the 'new release' section, if I even rent it then.

edit: three things I really liked were the Choreography, the camera work, and the little anime bit showing the origins of Lucy Lui's character. Still not enough to make up for the other glaring weaknesses but they at held my interest. Needed much more quality dialogue and far less pointless but very realistic

I have no problem with multiple editions of a DVD being released. But be DECENT about it - be like LOTR or Almost Famous - announce your release and mention that a Special Edition is on the way - so people don't have to buy twice.

I read that quote in the Times and thought to myself - I think I'll download this one off the net just so it's one less dollar going in this asshole's pocket.

Ok, I just spent $20 buying Vol 1 at target. I just had to have it after seeing it at a friends. If they come out with a VOL 1 & 2 special edition, then I will end up just buying that one also. Again, I just had to have it, along with the sound track for Vol 1 and 2, although Vol 2 soundtrack is much better.

Location: the phoenix metro	alright kids. rented the dvd. for whatever you're willing to pay, you get: the movie a couple music videos from the 5,6,7,8's (the girls who were rocking out in the diner before the crazy 88's fight) a making-of featurette that consists of quentin talking about how great he is, uma talking about how great quentin is, and a basic intro to the other players we met in volume 1, along with minimal behind the scenes footage and on-location footage, all superseded by quentin in goofy asian shirts. some trailers for quentin's old movies, a couple for volume 1, and a minimal teaser for volume 2. i didn't check for director's commentary, i couldn't stand listening to quentin talk that much. the fucker is very full of himself. that's pretty much it. not alot left to it, so if you feel you -must- have the movie in your collection, pick it up. otherwise, rent it, watch it, then go watch volume 2 on friday and giggle in anticipation of the release of a real set with real extras. __________________ My country is the world, and my religion is to do good. - Thomas Paine

Man, after seeing Quentin Tarantino on American Idol and on Howard Stern tonight, combined with phredgreen's post, I'm rethinking my decision to not buy this. I just remembered that for the most part I can't stand that man. He really is way too full of himself. He makes good movies, but Christ is he annoying! Location: Galveston, TX	I went ahead and bought this movie the day it was released, I am a little disappointed wit the lack of special features, I thought it'd be a doudle disk also since there was so much into making this film. I think I'll just keep this version and then go rent the special edition when it comes out on dvd, Im not too much for actor/actress interviews but I would like to see a directors commentary and the whole story behind the anime scene.

flamingdog Still fighting it.	I bought a few special edition discs when i first got DVD enabled, thinking my experience would not be complete without a bunch of extra crap. I have never ever watched an extra feature on any of the discs, i dunno why. As soon as I realised i wasn't bothering to watch the shit, I stopped buying it. I just go for bog standard movies. I am not enough of a connoisseur to notice things like picture quality and sound and stuff, i am there for the story and the dialogue. and if people pay once for a movie, then are stupid enough to fall for industry bullshit and buy it again, then i have no sympathy when they complain. that article is whining like the writer is under some kind of compulsion to buy these extra sets.

If part two is much heavier on dialogue with decent plot development then it has to be better, or at least I can hope. ----- my overall view - passable. The best part for me seeing that beautiful fine blade and Uma Thurman. Everything else was pretty much forgettable, and the big fight scene did nothing for me at all in any sense beside make me wonder how much better it would have been without it. A good rental but not something I would watch in the theatre or buy unless it was a cheap bargain bin/previously viewed DVD. Mildy curious about the sequel but can wait until it hits the video store and leaves the 'new release' section, if I even rent it then. edit: three things I really liked were the Choreography, the camera work, and the little anime bit showing the origins of Lucy Lui's character. Still not enough to make up for the other glaring weaknesses but they at held my interest. Needed much more quality dialogue and far less pointless but very realistic violence. __________________ Started talking to yourself I see. sky_driver Insane	Ok, I just spent $20 buying Vol 1 at target. I just had to have it after seeing it at a friends. If they come out with a VOL 1 & 2 special edition, then I will end up just buying that one also. Again, I just had to have it, along with the sound track for Vol 1 and 2, although Vol 2 soundtrack is much better.
