south park and the passion

Did you happen to catch south park tonite....gosh darn that was funny. they managed to make mel gibson look like a crazy freak and cartman turned into hitler and seeing the passion of the christ. How those guys get away with that is beyond me, but i'm glad they do....cuz it is good stuff.

because it's cable not broadcast.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are fucking geniuses. Only they can pull off the most politically incorrect show out there, and despite how offensive it is, its absolutely hilarious, and it just keeps getting funnier.

Homey_V 03-31-2004 08:46 PM

South Park has got to be one of the best comedies on TV right now. It just keeps improving and it sure beats the recent Simpsons seasons.

BuddyHawks 03-31-2004 08:51 PM

it works good because if there is a current even, they can make an episode about it a week later.

From a lifelong Simpsons fan, this is no difficult task. The Simpsons just aren't that funny anymore. South Park is pretty funny.

Fremen 03-31-2004 09:41 PM

I like when they got in a jab at their own movie, BASEketball. :p

I'm a pretty big South Park fan, but I thought that last night's episode was pretty much a letdown. It seemed that rather than place any kind of intelligent social commentary throughout the episode like they're known for, they instead took the easy way out with obvious Jewish jokes, Cartman as Hitler (which has been done before), and Mel Gibson as the typical insane celebrity (also done before).

frankx 04-01-2004 04:45 PM

Every week, Matt and Trey totally baffle me with how they top the previous week's show. Last night's show was hysterical.

Yeah, I felt the same way. I thought they could have done so much more than the obvious jokes about the passion.

punx1325 04-01-2004 06:33 PM

They always cross that line, that's what I love about that show.

Cycler 04-01-2004 07:49 PM

Never content to rest on their successes they always push the line.

leon2345 04-01-2004 09:41 PM

I thought they over did the Gibson as Daffy thing, but I did like seeing him crap on Cartman.

Stompy 04-01-2004 09:52 PM

You've gotta love South Park.

Any show that can get away with saying "shit" over 100 times in one episode and continues, to this day, challenge the boundaries with controversial material is a keeper.

What does it matter if they're cable vs. broadcast? How do the FCC's regulations differ from the two? There has to be SOME rules regarding cable, otherwise they wouldn't bleep out the speech at times.. and I'm sure they could do a LOT worse (controversy) than what they're doing now.

I always wondered how they got away with the shit episode.

Jesus Malverde 04-01-2004 11:28 PM

Nevermind how South Park got away with it, I want to know how the hell Chappelle's Show got away with showing a penis. Granted it was a puppet penis, but there was discharge! I couldn't stop laughing at what I had just seen, and thought to myself "Comedy Central did it again."

BigGov 04-02-2004 04:42 AM

They'd already done puppet nudity on Crank Yankers, so it was no problem for Chappelle's show to do it at the same time slot.

Also, I don't think if South Park has been getting funnier and funnier, mainly because the first show of their third season (Forest Schmorest) where they went to Costa Rica as a part of the group Getting Gay With Kids was the funniest half hour of TV I've ever seen.

The FCC does not have jurisdiction over cable-only networks. They only regulate the airwaves. (they are trying to get jurisdiction over cable, but that's a whole different thread)

The cable networks self-censor because they don't want to piss off their advertisers, and their parent companies don't want to invite boycotts by angry conservatives (won't somebody think of the children??)

Nothing beats Chickenlover and the mormon episode ;)

Booray 04-03-2004 07:47 PM

I thought it was a decent episode, but could've been better.

If you want to see a South Park clip that I can almost guarantee would never make its way onto Comedy Central (and probably would have trouble being aired on HBO), take a look at this video:

Cartman is Archie Bunker. If they censor him, they kill the character that people love to hate.

H12 04-04-2004 02:50 PM

"Oh yeah, just bring it!"
"Oh, I already brought it; I brought it, set it on a table, and opened it!!!"

I love South Park.

Holy shit. Wow. I feel incredibly evil and disgusting for finding humor in that.

KellyC 04-16-2004 09:41 PM

this thread needs to be on the front page again

bump!

BigGov 04-17-2004 03:14 PM

Oh, I forgot to recommend the second movie by Trey and Matt.

Orgazmo.

It's hard to describe without giving it away, but I will say that the NC-17 is not because of nudity (because there is very little), but rather because of the subject matter one thing being Trey playing a mormon.

RoboBlaster 04-17-2004 04:15 PM

The thing about South Park is that though it pushes the envelope in terms of offensiveness, they usually save face by actually having a point. It isn't shock for the sake of shock.

Anomaly_ 04-17-2004 04:39 PM

Maybe everyone has seen these already, but Trey and Matt made some flash cartoons as a Macromedia promotion. Not surprisingly, they were way too vulgar and now they just have cult popularity. It's called "Princess" and it is NSFW at all.
