Iron Chef

Do you guys get this show in the US?

If so, does anyone here watch it? I think it's one of the best programmes on TV. Great entertainment!

Who would have thought a show based upon a cooking competition, in a "stadium" no less, would be so cool?..

Iron Chef is awesome. I was so obsessed with that show that I took on its identity, as you can see. Unfortunately, I haven't seen an episode in a while, but I try to catch it whenever I can.

evilbeefchan 03-29-2004 05:12 PM

It is my absolute favorite show of all time!! I understand that the show's been over in Japan for a while, correct? I remember they tried to have a US version of Iron Chef with William Shatner taking Kaga's place. It was horrible, with the chef's having names like "Italian Scallion" and stuff like that.

My favorite had to be Chen Kenichi. I love sezuchuan(sp?) cooking, and he was always so funny.

Mephisto2 03-29-2004 05:19 PM

When you say "it's been over in Japan", do you mean the show is no longer running? Or it's been over in Japan (id you know what I mean)?..

Mr Mephisto

PS - Whose cusine will reign supreme?!!

evilbeefchan 03-29-2004 05:43 PM

I know what you mean. ;) and I meant the first meaning. They stopped around 1999-2000. Here's a site with the broadcast history

frankx 03-29-2004 05:52 PM

I have been an avid watcher for years. I usually catch the reruns on weekends on Food Network. I tried to watch the ghastly U.S. version with William Shatner, but spurned it in favor of the original.

JohnnyRoyale 03-29-2004 06:20 PM

The original Iron Chef is gone, unfortunately, It was cancelled a while back, so all there is is reruns :(

There is a rumor that there's another US version being made, but I sure hope it's better than the last one.

Bamrak 03-29-2004 06:55 PM

I love it. I enjoy seeing chef's from around the world compete in head to head trials like that. I only hope that the new US version is better than the last.

Lotronex 03-29-2004 07:50 PM

I loved the original Iron Chef. Caught a few minutes of the US version and it just blew. I know that there was plans to have specials everyonce and a while, like the bobby flay(i hate him) battles that aired a few years ago.

jhericurl21 03-29-2004 09:48 PM

i liked the japanese cook but he rarely won against his opponents, thank god he beat Flay though.

would like to see other tv cooks on that show though, like Emeril, Mario, or guy from Chef At Large

Food Network has been advertising "Iron Chef: Battle of the Masters," where they show pictures of Sakai, Kenichi, Morimoto + Mario, Wolfgang and Flay. They haven't outright said if they're facing each other, but one can only hope.

the show is great. I'm skeptical about the american port of the OG show, though.

thanks for the link.

Great show.

I heard that Alton Brown (Good Eats) is somehow involved in the new Iron Chef USA.

ironchefkorea 03-30-2004 11:18 AM

I could see him taking the place of that creepy bell-pepper biting dude. I love AB, he's the shit.

There will be a new man in Kitchen Stadium later this year.

Alton Brown, host of "Good Eats" on the Food Network, will serve as a commentator for a series of "Iron Chef America" specials on the cable channel beginning in April, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Brown, a food historian and scientist as well as a chef, will fill the expert commentator role played by Dr. Yukio Hatori on the Japanese original, a dubbed version of which is a cult favorite on the Food Network.

As in the Japanese format, a secret ingredient is revealed and an all-star panel scores each dish for taste, presentation, and originality.

Iron Chef America premieres Friday, April 23 at 9pm ET/PT.

I can't wait to see Emeril do battle and fail horribly.

I'd love to see Sakai wipe the floor with Emeril's ass.

My wife and I have been watching it every night lately. We love the show. They had king crab last night. I didn't know those fuckers were that big!

I also read about one with large live octopus. One of the chefs dropped one on the ground and it tried to scurry away.

roachboy 08-05-2004 03:17 PM

i was for a while a big iron chef fan.
sadly, tv that was not the iron chef got too annoying so i decided not to do anything with it anymore other than watch dvds on it.
one index of this is that morimoto has a resto in philadelphia, and has for about a year, and i still havent screwed up the ambition to go.

sashime76 08-06-2004 09:23 AM

My last trip to Japan was in 2000, the show had stopped a year or two before that as I was told. I can whip up a few good dishes but nowhere near what these guys can stir up. Sakai is the best in m opinion.

bltzkriegmcanon 01-21-2005 06:47 PM

All the episodes I've seen of this show are a damn laugh-riot and damn good to watch. What I've seen of Iron Chef America has been pretty good.

omega2K4 01-21-2005 07:40 PM

I try to watch it whenever it is on the Food Network. I love the dubbed voices, its like watching a Godzilla movie.

sinjien 01-22-2005 12:15 AM

The original Iron Chef is hilarious but some of the stuff they cook even i cant eat; and i eat turtle soup..yummy green stew!! IC America is more my flavor.

Malou 01-22-2005 10:55 AM

I really like this show except for the annoying fortune teller lady

Bonesaw 01-23-2005 07:34 AM

since i don't have cable anymore i'm going through Iron Chef withdrawl. However i'm visiting relatives that have cable and I'm totally geeked at the prospect of watching Iron Chef America tonight.

That is one of my favorite things about it... especially the dubbed voice of the cute little Japanese actress judge who always covers her mouth when she talks... and she giggles a lot... I'd really love to know what they are really saying.

Redjake 01-23-2005 05:55 PM

I can't watch the dubbed version. It gets on my nerves too bad. I think the fact that they dub EVERYTHING, from sighs to laughs to interuptions in mid-sentence, gets on my nerves. I enjoyed the United States special that came on a week or two ago with Bobby Flay though. That was interesting!

Bonesaw 01-23-2005 07:20 PM

Well i just finished watching tonight's episode. It was pretty interesting (and makes me wonder how much interaction actually happens between the chefs and commentators in the Japanese version) to see Batali speaking directly to Alton Brown as Alton speculated on the dishes being prepared. You get a much better sense of how close everybody is in the actual "arena". I do wish/hope they get some actors to be judges in the future and I would hope that they allow for the judges comments to be played over the air as the chef's are cooking in future episodes. As commented earlier the judges comments (particularly the giggling actress) give the show a little extra charm.

Hubby and I have been watching Iron Chef for about two years now and we both love it! We love the original (dubbed) Japanese version and the newest Iron Chef America (sadly, we haven't seen a Shatner show but that would be great fun!).

Since no one else has brought it up, I feel the need to. Are we the only ones who have noticed that the Iron Chefs win about 90% of the time? We both thought it was quite obvious on the original shows and it seems to be repeating on the new ones. Bobby Flay is an excellent chef but Rick Bayless is by far and away superior when it comes to Latin (Mexican) cooking. Since they both made the same cuisine and had the same surprise ingredient, buffalo, the better chef should have won. Bayless obviously is our pick for the better chef and yet he lost.

Neither of us know the chef that went against Batali tonight but we thought they were pretty evenly matched with their dishes, and yet Batali blew the other chef out of the water with the taste score.

Has any one else noticed this uneveness? Do you think it's bias on the judges part towards the Iron Chef? Just curious.

Ali

I love the show. I will say that in all the shows that I have seen, I have yet to see an Iron Chef lose.

Actually, i think the percentage is higher than 90%. It was a rare day in hell when one of the iron chefs lost. When we first started watching the show a couple years ago, i went on the Fuji TV website (the producers of the show). The explanation given was that the iron chefs were, so to speak, 'tenured'; Therefore, the advantage almost exclusively went to the iron chefs. You can probably count on one hand the number of times an iron chef lost.

A few years ago, some chef from San Francisco beat Sakai in a lobster battle. but that's about it.
