Iron Chef
Do you guys get this show in the US?
If so, does anyone here watch it? I think it's one of the best programmes on TV. Great entertainment! Who would have thought a show based upon a cooking competition, in a "stadium" no less, would be so cool?.. Mr Mephisto |

It is my absolute favorite show of all time!! I understand that the show's been over in Japan for a while, correct? I remember they tried to have a US version of Iron Chef with William Shatner taking Kaga's place. It was horrible, with the chef's having names like "Italian Scallion" and stuff like that.
My favorite had to be Chen Kenichi. I love sezuchuan(sp?) cooking, and he was always so funny. |

I have been an avid watcher for years. I usually catch the reruns on weekends on Food Network. I tried to watch the ghastly U.S. version with William Shatner, but spurned it in favor of the original.

The original Iron Chef is gone, unfortunately, It was cancelled a while back, so all there is is reruns
There is a rumor that there's another US version being made, but I sure hope it's better than the last one.

My wife and I have been watching it every night lately. We love the show. They had king crab last night. I didn't know those fuckers were that big! I also read about one with large live octopus. One of the chefs dropped one on the ground and it tried to scurry away. |

i was for a while a big iron chef fan.
sadly, tv that was not the iron chef got too annoying so i decided not to do anything with it anymore other than watch dvds on it. one index of this is that morimoto has a resto in philadelphia, and has for about a year, and i still havent screwed up the ambition to go.

All the episodes I've seen of this show are a damn laugh-riot and damn good to watch. What I've seen of Iron Chef America has been pretty good.

I can't watch the dubbed version. It gets on my nerves too bad. I think the fact that they dub EVERYTHING, from sighs to laughs to interuptions in mid-sentence, gets on my nerves. I enjoyed the United States special that came on a week or two ago with Bobby Flay though. That was interesting!

Well i just finished watching tonight's episode. It was pretty interesting (and makes me wonder how much interaction actually happens between the chefs and commentators in the Japanese version) to see Batali speaking directly to Alton Brown as Alton speculated on the dishes being prepared. You get a much better sense of how close everybody is in the actual "arena". I do wish/hope they get some actors to be judges in the future and I would hope that they allow for the judges comments to be played over the air as the chef's are cooking in future episodes. As commented earlier the judges comments (particularly the giggling actress) give the show a little extra charm.

Hubby and I have been watching Iron Chef for about two years now and we both love it! We love the original (dubbed) Japanese version and the newest Iron Chef America (sadly, we haven't seen a Shatner show but that would be great fun!).
Since no one else has brought it up, I feel the need to. Are we the only ones who have noticed that the Iron Chefs win about 90% of the time? We both thought it was quite obvious on the original shows and it seems to be repeating on the new ones. Bobby Flay is an excellent chef but Rick Bayless is by far and away superior when it comes to Latin (Mexican) cooking. Since they both made the same cuisine and had the same surprise ingredient, buffalo, the better chef should have won. Bayless obviously is our pick for the better chef and yet he lost. Neither of us know the chef that went against Batali tonight but we thought they were pretty evenly matched with their dishes, and yet Batali blew the other chef out of the water with the taste score. Has any one else noticed this uneveness? Do you think it's bias on the judges part towards the Iron Chef? Just curious. Ali

Actually, i think the percentage is higher than 90%. It was a rare day in hell when one of the iron chefs lost. When we first started watching the show a couple years ago, i went on the Fuji TV website (the producers of the show). The explanation given was that the iron chefs were, so to speak, 'tenured'; Therefore, the advantage almost exclusively went to the iron chefs. You can probably count on one hand the number of times an iron chef lost. A few years ago, some chef from San Francisco beat Sakai in a lobster battle. but that's about it. |
