He MADE Spartacus, both the character and the film. Though his character's name escapes me, it is one of the best ever - the bold coward pushed just a bit too far.
I guess that means that, once Kirk Douglas goes, that's everyone of note in the movie. For god's sake, let us all sit upon the ground and tell sad stories of the death of kings. We hardly knew you, Pete, yet we'll miss you just the same.

I always loved his Hercule Poirot.
I didn't know all that about him in the article above. It sounds like we just lost a much greater man than a lot of us realised. He'll definitely be missed. R.I.P., Peter.

He was known in the UK primarily as a comedian, but was so much more than that. That said, it was wonderful to see him talk spontaneously, during interviews or one-man shows.
I really really liked him. What's the world coming to? First Peter Sellars, then Alec Guinness followed by Spike Milligan and now Peter Ustinov. All the "gentleman actors" or are dropping off and we have nothing comparable to replace them with. Tom Cruise in the Last Samurai just doesn't really measure up. I just hope Michael Caine, Sir Ian McClellan, John Hurt and Ben Kingsley last a while... Mr Mephisto Last edited by Mephisto2; 03-29-2004 at 09:10 PM.. |
