favorite comic series

i used to read a lot of comics but have been out of it for a few years. I've read all sorts of titles like Wolverine and Crimson. I loved Rising Stars; Darkness and Spawn. Anyone know what series has been doing well lately? What i mean by that is has both the story and artwork been enjoyable? Help me out guys.

Sandman comic books are great - if you haven't read them then you are missing out. For funny mindless violence you can't go wrong with Lobo, and I still think Batman is good as well.

Everytime Im in the bookstore, I cant help but pick up a new issue of GI Joe and read right there on the spot. I refuse to buy comics any more because they are just getting way too costly to pick up new issues every week. That's a real week justification considering what I've coughed up for some particular back issues. But yeah, GI Joe ROCKS! Just check the Avatar!

There are all sorts of great titles out right now. Gotham Central, Fables, 1602, Daredevil, and Flash are some of the good ones I read regularly. Alias was a good series that just ended recently and is now being continued as The Pulse. Right now is a very good time for comic fans of all kinds.

The moment I started reading Gaiman's Sandman I knew I had found greatness. I have been his disciple ever since. I used to read a few other titles but Sandman is still the greatest by far. I would like to start in with Hellblazer and am looking for where to start. Suggestions? Thanks

I tend to follow writers, rather than titles. So my list would include:
Warren Ellis
Grant Morrison
Garth Ennis
J. Michael Straczynski
Peter David
Christopher Priest
Mark Millar
Brian Michael Bendis
Kurt Busiek
Alan Moore

Current series I'm liking is Superman/Batman. For something a few years older, check out The Authority.

I don't read anymore, but I used to love the X-Men. If you are a collector and into older books, then try to pick up the Vigilante series. It was one of the books that saved DC from extinction. Ran for 50 issues and had a great story.

As far as cyber comics goes... try Monica Furious and Dire Destiny. Both are worthy of following.

DB.

Edited for Spelling...

I used to collect the x-men series (both) but my favourite was Wolverine. I got a few thousand dollers worth sitting up at mums in cardboard boxs. The only reason I stopped was when the cartoon xmen started and comics became popular again. All the newsagents stopped selling any comic other than simpsons. So my ceasing of collecting comics was not due to lack of desire but lack of availability

The Infinity Gauntlet series. Man o man, I would sell my wife for a copy of that series. I remember all of us kids seein who could get to the comic store first and get a copy of each as they came out.

Now I'm all nostalgic and stuff...

Eightball, Daniel Clowes
Dork!, Evan Dorkin. He did Milk and Cheese as well.

I had hope for Spawn, collected the first 100 issues, realized it wasn't going anywhere, stopped.

Watchmen++. The Superman/Batman series is great, a little predictable right now (you'll know what I mean if you are following it) but the artwork is great.

Ultimate Spidey I was with until this Carnage thing started, I missed a couple of issues including the major one recently involving Gwen Stacy (no spoiler) and I was disappointed it how that was handled compared to the original storyline. Didn't like the way Venom came into the picture either compared to the original. It's like they are rushing to get the favorite villans into the storyline.

I found Y The Last Man published by Vertigo on a bit torrent. Great story. A plague wipes out all men except one. Women pretty much run the planet now. The last guy teams up with a scientest and a government agent and begin a trip across America from New York to California in search of the cause of the plague. No superheros or super powers. But a good read so far.

I always liked Archie Comics. And of course Blondie. I have always wondered why they never came out with Blondie books. They had Far-Side and Bloom County and Garfield and Beetle Bailey and just about anyone you could think of but never Blondie.

Sure in the 40's they had the Blondie movies with Arthur Lake and Penny Singleton (who was also the voice of Jane Jetson) and the radio show but then nothing except strips in the paper (as far as I know).

One of the most popular comic strips ever and it's treated like a bald headed step child.

The Maxx (now in reprint TPB) is freaking awesome. The first 10 (as far as I've read) are right up there with my favorite all time. The MTV cartoon was pretty sweet too.

100 Bullets is like crack to me.

The Dark Knight Returns/Strikes Again were both really cool.

Rising Stars is fantastic, if and when it finishes.

Top 10 is pretty cool, but alas, not going to be finished.

Sin City is landmark. Pretty cool art, great stories.

First book was 3 years ago, second was last year. There's a spinoff either in the works right now, or already happened this year about Smax.
