favorite comic series

i used to read a lot of comics but have been out of it for a few years. I've read all sorts of titles like Wolverine and Crimson. I loved Rising Stars; Darkness and Spawn. Anyone know what series has been doing well lately? What i mean by that is has both the story and artwork been enjoyable? Help me out guys.

MPower 03-03-2004 11:03 AM

Rising stars is superb on story and art.
Exiles is pretty good on both.
Im enjoying the outsiders and teen titans, art is good story getting better.

Sandman comic books are great - if you haven't read them then you are missing out. For funny mindless violence you can't go wrong with Lobo, and I still think Batman is good as well.

bparker805 03-03-2004 11:33 AM

Everytime Im in the bookstore, I cant help but pick up a new issue of GI Joe and read right there on the spot. I refuse to buy comics any more because they are just getting way too costly to pick up new issues every week. That's a real week justification considering what I've coughed up for some particular back issues. But yeah, GI Joe ROCKS! Just check the Avatar!

Psivage 03-03-2004 06:51 PM

Captain Marvel is great.

Locke 03-03-2004 07:09 PM

I love the sandman series and all of its spinoffs. Box office poison was really good. I've read a few of the new gijoe issues and liked em. oh yeah, The preacher is pretty good also.

Da Munk 03-03-2004 07:19 PM

There are all sorts of great titles out right now. Gotham Central, Fables, 1602, Daredevil, and Flash are some of the good ones I read regularly. Alias was a good series that just ended recently and is now being continued as The Pulse. Right now is a very good time for comic fans of all kinds.

sinjien 03-03-2004 07:35 PM

you guys fucking rock!! thanks for the sugestions and insite. If you have anymore please post 'em. Oh yeah, anyone read Crimson? Just wondering if the series is still going.

MahlerIsGod 03-03-2004 08:05 PM

The moment I started reading Gaiman's Sandman I knew I had found greatness. I have been his disciple ever since. I used to read a few other titles but Sandman is still the greatest by far. I would like to start in with Hellblazer and am looking for where to start. Suggestions? Thanks

MPower 03-04-2004 07:44 AM

I forgot about fables. wonderful stuff, new storyline just started about 2 months ago. Ultimate FF just launched and its pretty good also.

gilada 03-04-2004 08:28 AM

I tend to follow writers, rather than titles. So my list would include:
Warren Ellis
Grant Morrison
Garth Ennis
J. Michael Straczynski
Peter David
Christopher Priest
Mark Millar
Brian Michael Bendis
Kurt Busiek
Alan Moore

bltzkriegmcanon 03-04-2004 09:42 AM

I really liked Marvel's Ultimate series, specificaly Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men.

CryptikSoul 03-04-2004 06:51 PM

Current series I'm liking is Superman/Batman. For something a few years older, check out The Authority.:)

flamingdog 03-05-2004 05:33 AM

I like the new dreamwave interpretations of 80s favourites. I can't believe theirs is the first artwork to make the transformers actually look like the imposing 20 foot steel behemoths they are.

Doom 2099 (oldy but goody), Maximum Carnage mini-series

Best ones I've read (I'm not a huge fan though)

Pellaz 03-07-2004 09:11 PM

Preacher is one of the best stories ever told.

Golgothas 03-08-2004 10:50 AM

Watchmen is something everyone must read.

Cynthetiq 08-31-2004 04:57 PM

i can't begin to write about how I had gotten completely sucked into the Marvel universe as a teen.

I just found the electronic scans of comics :) yippeee!!!!! CBZ and CBR readers ROCK!!! and I don't have to worry that I'm "damaging" my comics as I'm reading them....thank you bit torrent.

stonegrody 08-31-2004 05:04 PM

I used to read the Sandman comics. I also read some of the Death comics. I've been meaning to read the Watchmen, heard lots of good things about that one.

Siccx 08-31-2004 05:58 PM

Spawn, Grendel, and Lone Wolf & Cub are my favorites, just about finished with the Lone Wolf & Cub series too, on book twenty five right now. The new Street Fighter comics are pretty good too...

archer2371 08-31-2004 06:03 PM

Spider-Man, anything Spider-Man. (As if you couldn't tell.)

Dane Bramage 08-31-2004 06:14 PM

I don't read anymore, but I used to love the X-Men. If you are a collector and into older books, then try to pick up the Vigilante series. It was one of the books that saved DC from extinction. Ran for 50 issues and had a great story.

As far as cyber comics goes... try Monica Furious and Dire Destiny. Both are worthy of following.

DB.

Edited for Spelling...

batman- the dark Knight returns

preacher

watchmen

Transmetropolitan- if you like hunter S thompson you will love this

Lunchbox7 08-31-2004 11:38 PM

I used to collect the x-men series (both) but my favourite was Wolverine. I got a few thousand dollers worth sitting up at mums in cardboard boxs. The only reason I stopped was when the cartoon xmen started and comics became popular again. All the newsagents stopped selling any comic other than simpsons. So my ceasing of collecting comics was not due to lack of desire but lack of availability

tropple 09-01-2004 04:57 AM

I really liked Transmetropolitan. Very, very anti-establishment, set in a future US. You can still get the trade re-releases.

Antikarma 09-01-2004 05:41 AM

The Infinity Gauntlet series. Man o man, I would sell my wife for a copy of that series. I remember all of us kids seein who could get to the comic store first and get a copy of each as they came out.

Now I'm all nostalgic and stuff...

twister002 09-01-2004 06:32 AM

Eightball, Daniel Clowes
Dork!, Evan Dorkin. He did Milk and Cheese as well.

I had hope for Spawn, collected the first 100 issues, realized it wasn't going anywhere, stopped. :(

Watchmen++. The Superman/Batman series is great, a little predictable right now (you'll know what I mean if you are following it) but the artwork is great.

Ultimate Spidey I was with until this Carnage thing started, I missed a couple of issues including the major one recently involving Gwen Stacy (no spoiler) and I was disappointed it how that was handled compared to the original storyline. Didn't like the way Venom came into the picture either compared to the original. It's like they are rushing to get the favorite villans into the storyline.

bltzkriegmcanon 09-01-2004 08:53 AM

Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Spider-Man

Horrendous 09-11-2004 01:29 PM

just to let you know, i'm an x-men fan
i agree with the above, ultimate x-men is nice
i'm really enjoyin' astonishing x-men, joss whedon is currently the writer for first story arc (current series is up to issue 4). the art is nice, too.

Cobalt_60 09-11-2004 10:46 PM

I found Y The Last Man published by Vertigo on a bit torrent. Great story. A plague wipes out all men except one. Women pretty much run the planet now. The last guy teams up with a scientest and a government agent and begin a trip across America from New York to California in search of the cause of the plague. No superheros or super powers. But a good read so far.

pan6467 09-12-2004 01:59 AM

I always liked Archie Comics. And of course Blondie. I have always wondered why they never came out with Blondie books. They had Far-Side and Bloom County and Garfield and Beetle Bailey and just about anyone you could think of but never Blondie.

Sure in the 40's they had the Blondie movies with Arthur Lake and Penny Singleton (who was also the voice of Jane Jetson) and the radio show but then nothing except strips in the paper (as far as I know).

One of the most popular comic strips ever and it's treated like a bald headed step child.

tropple 09-13-2004 09:06 AM

Is anyone reading the Tom Strong comics? (ceated by Alan Moore for America's Best Comics)

hilbert25 09-13-2004 11:29 PM

The Maxx (now in reprint TPB) is freaking awesome. The first 10 (as far as I've read) are right up there with my favorite all time. The MTV cartoon was pretty sweet too.

100 Bullets is like crack to me.

The Dark Knight Returns/Strikes Again were both really cool.

Rising Stars is fantastic, if and when it finishes.

Top 10 is pretty cool, but alas, not going to be finished.

Sin City is landmark. Pretty cool art, great stories.

Did they re-release Top 10? I thought that series ended like 3 years ago?

I second the vote for astonishing X.

First book was 3 years ago, second was last year. There's a spinoff either in the works right now, or already happened this year about Smax.

Transmetropolitan
The Watchmen
Spawn: The Dark Ages - nice little series with beautiful art
