Liam Neeson a villain in the new Batman

Source: Coming Soon!

Both Cinescape and The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed that Liam Neeson (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace) will star opposite Christian Bale in Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming Batman movie being directed by Christopher Nolan and written by David Goyer.

While the studio is keeping quiet about his role, he is expected to play a villain in the new adaptation. He'll also be joining Michael Caine, Katie Holmes and Cillian Murphy.

Neeson will next appear in Kinsey and is currently shooting Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven with Orlando Bloom.
awesome! this movie is starting to get a good cast and there might actually be hope after all. I for one know that Christian Bale is the best choice for the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

mystmarimatt 02-12-2004 04:15 PM

Sweet!

I'm just glad Katie Holmes is in it, she's just adorable.

diergray 02-12-2004 05:22 PM

Man when I first read that I thought it was the guy from Naked Gun, LOL!

BuddyHawks 02-12-2004 05:25 PM

shaping up to be a good flick

World's King 02-12-2004 05:47 PM

I bet he will play the Watchman.

*goes back to being cool*

bundy 02-12-2004 05:57 PM

sounds like this should be a pretty good movie.
but its going to have to be FUCKING good if they want to make up for the last two batman movies.

Redjake 02-12-2004 06:41 PM

HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought the Christian Bale thing was just a rumor!!!! This is gonna be awesome.......Liam and Christian are excellent fuckin' actors

illesturban 02-12-2004 08:30 PM

yeah David Goyer is the writer of Blade so you know it'll be good and dark. Also Nolan directed good movies like Memento so it should be pretty interesting. I'm stoked.

Mr.Deflok 02-12-2004 09:39 PM

Everyone so far attached to this film rocks, let's not forget that Michael FUCKING Caine is Alfred! And that Morgan Freeman supposedly has a part in the film (rumoured to play Gordon strangely enough).

xim 02-12-2004 11:03 PM

i thought tim burton was taking the project back ...?

mbchills 02-13-2004 06:25 AM

I cant see Liam being a villian.. just cant

I haven't seen enough of Nolan's work to be assured that his involvement will make this good. Memento was great, but it could have been a fluke. Insomnia was decent... nothing too spectacular though. Maybe I'm still just bummed that Aronofsky's Batman: Year One was put on the back burner. I'd rather see what he can do with Batman. Eitherway, I'm excited to see what happens with it.

Lebell 02-13-2004 08:49 AM

Sigh,

I must be so old school.

I remember not liking Michael Keaton as Batman simply because he didn't fit the physical build required by the comics.

I can't see Bale as Batman for the same reason.

Neeson could be good.

Does anyone know what villian he's playing?

illesturban 02-13-2004 10:54 AM

^are you serious!? Christian Bale is huge. Have you not seen Equilibrium or American Psycho? Bale IS Batman. point-blank, PERIOD. lmao. I think he's gonna kick major ass. At least I hope, so I don't end up eating my words, lol. But yeah he can bulk up when he needs to.

Mr.Deflok 02-13-2004 01:11 PM

Bale in THE MACHINIST is shockingly thin, but he can bulk up and be a big motherucker.

THE FOLLOWING is my favourite Nolan directed flick.

moonstrucksoul 02-13-2004 01:23 PM

ummm, as Commisioner Gordon?

Mephisto2 02-13-2004 02:52 PM

ANOTHER Batman movie?

Jeez...

illesturban 02-13-2004 06:19 PM

^this has nothing to do with the earlier franchise though.

I am so not a Batman fan. But Liam Neeson is hot, so I'm there. :)

DownwardSpiral 02-14-2004 11:32 PM

This movie sounds better and better every time I hear new news on in. I sure hope this movie can live up to what we're all expecting. So far so good from here.

Eh, it won't hurt my feelings if I'm wrong. Truthfully, I don't know alot about Bale.

illesturban 02-15-2004 02:15 PM

^ oh ok i gotcha. Yeah Bale was every fanboy's pick to be Batman. I hope he doesn't disappoint...

Glad I wasn't the only one. *hangs head in shame*

Any projected date for this movie yet?

grayman 02-15-2004 04:56 PM

The more I hear about this movie, the more apprehensive I become. I really think that this will be a bad idea for Bale because a big budget bomb(as all the Batman sequels have been) will seriously damage the positive reputation that he has worked long to establish. Plus, it seems that the more bigtime or moderately bigtime actors are in a Batman movie, the more it sucks, i.e. the last film was full of big names and was the worst of all. I hope that this film does well, but I am seriously skeptical.

Michael Keaton? Jack Nicholson? Kim Basinger? Danny DeVito? Michelle Pfieffer? Christopher Walken? This argument does not stand up. These are all big names, especially for the period they appeared in Batman movies, and the first two films, whilst flawed, have some stunning performances in them.

I don't really understand how anyone could not like Keaton as Batman. In my view, the physical build isn't so important, cos Batman is drawn all kinds of different ways. Sometimes he's a big-ass motherfucker witha massive Judge Dredd jaw, and other times he's a bit more human looking. But the bat-suit gave Keaton the physique he needed. Batman isn't a character, he's simply a realisation of motivations, taken to an extreme. The character part of Batman is Bruce Wayne, and that's the aspect they need to nail to get it spot on. Michael Keaton played a fractured, fucked up millionaire playboy brilliantly. That's why Val Kilmer (he can't fucking act) and George Clooney (he's too clean-cut and wholesome) didn't work.

All Batman needs to do is look menacing and kick ass. Bruce Wayne is where you learn about the man. That needs to be done right.

Given his performance in American Psycho, I think Bale will do a good job.

Personally I wish they'd not killed off The Joker in the first movie. Obviously they could bring him back, but the interplay between Batman and The Joker was always the most fascinating thing about the comics. They were two very similar people divided by ideology.

And I would dearly love to see Batman Year One brought to the screen.

I agree that both these films have stunning performances in them, but the first is far superior. Guess what, your list of big names for the second film is one longer than the first, and it sucked. The more stars you have on screen competing for time, the worse the film. Nicholson was the star of the first film. The biggest movie Keaton had been in before Batman was Beetlejuice, hardly the major star you suggest, and Basinger was a minor character in the film with little screen time (not that she was that big a star anyway: "My Step-mother is an Alien" "Blind Date.") There was one major star in the movie and it worked. They keep adding people to this one and I am worried.

Well, first of all, I disagree that the second one sucked. But that's a matter of subjective opinion, we'll never solve that one. Compared to Batman Forever, it was a work of genius. (I can't comment on Batman and Robin because I've never seen it, mostly because of what I've heard about it).

I take your point on Nicholson. I don't know that I necessarily agree that the more stars you have, the worse the film, although I could be persuaded.

It strikes me that a lot of films these days get fairly big names in to play supporting roles. I guess it adds credibility to an actor's CV... specific examples escape me, however.

Anyway, Lando Calrissian was in the first movie, so now the list's even.

rrf 02-16-2004 04:21 PM

good thing they didnt get jon voight...

Billy Dee Williams owns, no actor will ever come close to upping his winning smile.

illesturban 02-19-2004 12:37 AM

Alright folks, Variety has confirmed the rumors to be true. This movie is looking to be good! They have an acclaimed director, leading man, and supporting cast! It should be pretty good. Now it hopefully will have the script to back the cast up.

Quote:

Morgan Freeman and Liam Neeson are confirmed to have joined the cast of Warner Bros.' new Batman film, reports Variety.

Freeman will play Lucius Fox, a respected businessman and the CEO of billionaire Bruce Wayne's mega-conglom, based in Gotham City. Liam Neeson plays the villain, Ra's al Ghul, a wealthy international terrorist.

Christian Bale stars as the Caped Crusader in the Christopher Nolan-helmed project which will start shooting March 16 in London. Also cast are Michael Caine (as butler Alfred), Cillian Murphy and Katie Holmes.

If I remember correctly, Ra's al Ghul is immortal, and he's in excellent physical condition, am I right?
I hope Liam did some crunches. ;)

I can't see Caine as Alfred, though. :hmm:
