Anyone else find Anime............ BORING?

I will admit when I was in my teen years, in the early years of high school, I did like anime. I thought the way it was drawn was cool and all the ninjas and big robots were a lot better than the cartoons we had over here.

But then I started participating in more sports, got a job, started going out on dates with girls, and completely forgot about it.

Fast forward to my junior year in college. I start going to LAN's with friends and after few a hours of gaming guess what they want to do... WATCH anime, TRADE anime, DISCUSS anime etc etc. Of course I am subjected to watching anime since many times these LAN's are at my friends' house. I sit there in front of these cartoons completely bored while everyone else is enthralled by schoolgirls with guns, giant robots smashing cities blah blah blah. Due to this anime overdose I have pretty much stopepd going to my friends' LANs.

So here is my question: How many TFP'ers out there are willing to admit that they find anime BORING? Yes I know you may not sound cool for admitting this, but hell SOMEONE needed to bring this out into the open.

I find about 97% of anime boring and over-rated. I too have been burned by a friend's obsession with anime. He dragged to me a convention and it scarred me for life. So much I almost threw away the few animes I own.

I agree, keeping yourself away from an anime overdose is the key. When browsing titles, it seems like there are way too many movies out there that are really just the same. I am no anime-file, but I do enjoy watching the occasional movie. If you stick to proven good ones , you might be able to get back into it somewhat. Take a month off and then watch Ninja Scrolls. Or get away from traditional anime and go for some nice dark american animation like Spawn.

Well, Sturgeon's Law holds that 90 percent of everything is crap. Personally, I think Sturgeon was being kind.

I'm not an anime fan, but I'm seen some of it; like anything else, most is crap. As with films: find some directors that you like, and follow their work. I'll see anything that Miyazaki does, for example.

Thanks for the laugh.

Anyways, all in all Anime is trash. The voices, the stories, the characters....Sometimes they're just far too annoying to even watch all the way through. However, I will concede that there are actually a few that are worthy of attention.

I like anime. I think the thing is to not be obsessed by it. I'll check it out when I can but I'm not a fanatic. That keeps it fresh and interesting.

I enjoy it, but only the premo stuff- IE;
Hellsing
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust
Ninja Scroll
Princess Monnoke(sp)

Other than that, I think 99 percent of it is over rated..

haha oh yes. best comedic anime ive seen in a while. ive taken to shouting HAAAAI when girls ask me to do something for them.

as has been said, if you stick to the good stuff then anime can be enjoyable, its no different than any other entertainment medium. i know the type youre talking about though, college kids that wish they were japanese and are completely obsessed with all things anime and japanese/asian just for the sake of being cool. i find it hard to believe some of the stuff these people watch they actually find entertaining if they held back a bit and really looked at it.

good anime, lets say sticking to movies: bebop movie, akira, millenium actress, ghost in the shell (the sequel/prequel looks mighty nice from what clips ive seen so far), metropolis (cool meld of modern cgi, extensive and minutely detailed background drawing, old school character animations), spriggan for pure shoot-em-up entertainment value.

Just out of curiosity, what anime have you haters seen?

I can understand peoples dislike for anime, I'm no fan of comedy anime but love serious epics like Ghost in the Shell, Jin-Roh, and Voices of a Distant Star. I can't stand DBZ anymore, and I'll never class Pokemon, Card Captors as anime because they're incredibly lame.

Anime is just like any other media; some of it is good, and some of it is damn awful. The problem here is the fact that to us Americans anime is new. As we all know, new things always seem cool at first. So these people who just come around to discovering Anime end up thinking that all Anime is good. Every time you tell them this isn’t so they end up throwing a fit. Just like a pre-teen Spice Girl fan would have a few years ago.

There are some absolutely great Anime titles out there that rival most movies and shows I’ve seen and there are others that are just terrible or simply made for a young audience.

First I'll say I haven't seen that much, but from what I have seen I think it's pretty weird. It seems to consist of scantily clad girls and giant robotic machines and torture and stuff, I mean, what's with tentacles? I sort of suspect this isn't like most anime, but it's what I've happened to see so yeah, it's put me off it.

Also, what's the difference between anime and manga?

Will have to check it out, thanks!

Like others have said, it's just like any other entertainment medium: some of it is good, most of it is crap. I had 2 anime titles in my collection for about 4 years (Ninja Scroll and Ghost in the Shell) and never watched any other anime. Then I watched the Cowboy Bebop movie and have slowly gotten back into watching the occasional title (have since picked up Vampire Hunter: Bloodlust).

I haven't watched much anime, but I like mangas a lot. Mangas have a lot of fucked up subjects and refreshing storylines, at least the ones I read. Get yourself a copy of River's Edge off eMule or go to http://thehawks.org/bt for some good quality manga.

Free manga downloads on the web:

http://omanga.net/?cid=news

manga links are on the left

I recommend Jisatsu Circle and Anne Freaks, both of which are strange and good. To easily read the mangas use Cdisplay:

http://www.geocities.com/davidayton/CDisplay

IMPORTANT:

Since these are tled from Japanese you MUST read backwards from right to left.

I'm not a Drooling Anime Fanboi, but I can say that I've seen some very cool stuff. Mononoke is very sweet. Ghost in the Shell kicks serious ass.

The whole sensibility of it is very different from most American enterntainment. It's more internal, quieter. Sometimes it doesn't exactly square with Western logic, but if you get into the spirit of it, it's very deep, rich stuff.

Holo Xday and Confidential Confessions are also some really interesting manga titles to check out. There are some really awesome titles comming out of Korea right now, like Priest and Peach Girl (i think that is the title, my gf reads it..not me..i swear)
Ragnarok is also okay, but i was in love with the game first and found the manga to be quite different.. and somewhat dissapointing in comparison. The Ragnarok anime however is horrendous.

I have seen a ton of anime, and I have come to the conclusion that all of it mostly sucks. I've seen some good series yah i know, but most of the animes stories/plot/characters suck. I still love it though passes the time. Currently I get tired of the same old anime showings still searching for something new. So far chappelle's feeling the gap real nice

I've seen a lot too. Most of the stuff that gets filtered into North America WAS good at one point, but the translated dialogue loses its original meaning, and the voice acting is terrible. As well, bits and pieces that aren't 'suitable' for an American audience are taken out.

I'll admit a lot of the stuff is crap. Most of it. But when you find the gems, it's a real treat. Just watching the animation for its own sake is good too.. getting to see the different styles, and the CG they use now.

a lot of anime is boring or over-rated, but since my husband intro'd me to things like Ghost In The Shell, Neon Genesis- the stories are quite interesting, art is good, and some even have great messages in them.

Anime, as many other things in this world, is not to be understood or appreciated by everyone on the planet. Some see a wonderful narrative, others are bored by it. Personal opinion is all that shapes whether you like it or not. There are plenty of people who do, and I think most of you would be surprised by what is actually out there. There is a VERY wide variety of styles available, appealing to many different kinds of tastes.

If you don't like it, don't fucking watch it, it's that simple.

Maybe I'll start a thread like this one, but I'll talk about how fucking stupid sports are. We'll see how well that one is received.

Kidding. Get my point?

Has anyone seen Spirited Away? We bought it for our 8-yr-old daughter, us not even having seen it, and we love it. Our 4 yr old son even was mezmorized by it.
Cute and funny for kids, deep message and story for adults.
I recommend seeing it. Some of it is bizarre, but that is the japanese culture.

Another Reccomendation is "Beserk"...just seeing somebody swing a sword thats bigger than they are is really cool!

I'm gonna have to disagree with everyone saying "don't want dubbed anime." Some of the best I've ever watched has been dubbed, and I've seen the same series/movies subbed as well, and I enjoyed the dubbed better.

Seriously people, if you don't know Japanese, it takes away from the experience. Why not have dubbed voices?

Some of my favorite dubs are Cowboy Bebop, Dragonball Z, and Sailor Moon (yes I used to watch it).

That's not to say the subs aren't good, and the original Japanese voices aren't good, but for people who don't watch anime as their only hobby, dubbing is God's gift to entertainment.

Dubbing is fine and well as long as they get a good set of voice actors. Cowboy Bebop is probably the most palatable dub ive seen in my experience, if solely for the fact that the translation wasnt such that the actor had to say about twice as many lines as he actually had time for, and secondly because the voice actors seemed to personify the character well and at least marginally sound like the original japanese voice actors.

if anyones watched the dubbed version of Escaflowne (series), and you hear the catgirl in english, you know precisely what i mean when i say i would gladly staple the mouth of that voice actor closed, or perhaps give her enough monetary incentive to leave the industry forever.

I agree. I've personally never found anime interesting in the slightest. I've tried to watch it, I even sat through an entire full feature film (I think it was Vampire Hunter B, or 2, or something like that), but I just don't see the appeal, much less the facination. I don't get it either.
