I've heard it called "Dances with Wolves....in Japan."
Is this a good indication of what I'm getting myself into in? I really like Dances with Wolves, but I don't really like Tom Cruise. However, I be willing to plunk down some cash if it's comparable to Dances with Wolves. Did I mention I like Dances with Wolves?

I promise to get out of your mind, if you promise to stay out of mine.... Good, I am pleased it is similar to Dances with Wolves. I'm sure I'll be able to compress my blinding white hot rage at Tom Cruise into a little bitter ball and enjoy this movie. Excellent.

After a crapfest month of movies, I almost went on overload because of seeing this and ROTK within a week. Best week of movies in a long time.
Oh, and Cruise did an amazing job with this movie, if you ask me. I can't really think of many that would have done it better, since emotional acting of his part would make or break the non action side of the flick.

I saw this movie tonight, and to my suprise I actually enjoyed it. This was the first time I've had a chance to make it to the movies in awhile, and I was glad I wasn't disappointed with another lack-luster film. I thought the acting was excellent by everyone involved and the battle scenes were great.
If you haven't seen it, you should. |

i think that it was a bit weak until the point where they went to Spoiler: rescue the samurai leader and from then on it was brilliant. If it had been that strong the entire time it would be in my all-time top 10. It's not though.

This movie had some badass fight scenes. I saw it the night it came out, would have gotten 4 stars but Tom Cruise still can't act his way out of a paper bag.

Other then the end where Tom tries to expand his "acting range", for the most part you forget that it's a Tom Cruise flick.
Quite well done and kudos to Ken Wantabe for stealing the movie. I liked the fact that they didn't Hollywood-ize most of the kenjutsu sequences. All the actions sequences were quite authenthic and well done. Only one thing that bugged me EDIT: Can't get the tags working but the bit at the kabuki play. Any Meiji era affictionado should know what I'm talking about. /rant off EDIT-freakin spolier tags

Cruise isn't gay, don't be upset just because he's had far more hotter women than any of us could ever hope for.
I just got back from seeing the film. Wow. This film is legendary, quite frankly, if Akira Kurosawa were still alive today this would be the film he'd make. Absolutely fantastic, brought about more tears than ROTK did. I may be biased though since I love pre-modernisation Japan so much and this particular time of the Samurai really struck a chord with me. |
