Too good to be true?

http://www.irobotnow.com/index.php NS-5 is supposely a domestic robot. I don't remember where I came across this website from but every time I come back to it, it seems to good to be true...

Thoughts?

itchy93 12-28-2003 12:39 PM

It's a fake. the domain is registered to 20th Century Fox, so I'm guessing it's a promo for a movie or something. It's very well done, but it also just uses buzzwords to make it seem realistic.

Pretty cool, though.

To good to be true.

I, Robot

Nefir 12-28-2003 12:48 PM

I've read the various features, and one part really bothers me - everything the robot sees and hears is transmitted to the Universal Retention Network... Big Brother, anyone?

This also reminds me of a few scenes in the Animatrix... here you have a machine that can lift 800 pounds, and is designed to be your personal butler. You've got 3 prime directives designed to keep humans safe. What is there's a bug? Watch the hilarity ensue as the machine rips your brains out! Woohoo! :D

Seriously though, if its for real, then serious strides in AI and robotics have been made without me ever hearing of them. I wish these engineers best of luck, because even if we are not ready for household robots today, tomorrow our kids might gladly use them.

bermuDa 12-28-2003 01:46 PM

someone linked me and said they found the link on CNN.com, but i remain skeptical. all the pictures look rendered, the business sounds made up, and when I saw "positronic brain" I figured it was a joke. The only thing that looked believable was the use of electronic muscle fibers.

but if they haven't yet perfected voice recognition software, we're decades away from having an android servant. Bicentennial Man, anyone?

I, Robot (2004)

Quote:

Set in a future Earth (2035 A.D.) where robots are common assistants and workers for their human owners, this is the story of "robotophobic" Chicago Police Detective Del Spooner's (Smith) investigation into the murder of Dr. Miles Hogenmiller, who works at U.S. Robotics (run by Greenwood), in which a robot, Sonny (Tudyk), appears to be implicated, even though that would mean the robot had violated the Laws of Robotics, which is apparently impossible. It seems impossible because.. if robots can break those laws, there's nothing to stop them from taking over the world, as humans have grown to become completely dependent upon their robots. Or maybe... they already have? Aiding Spooner in his investigation is a psychologist, Dr. Susan Calvin (Moynahan), who specializes in the psyches of robots...

ratbastid 12-28-2003 04:30 PM

Oh, yeah! It's going to be the coolest thing ever! I'm gonna get one the minute it comes out!

You can find out a lot more about it <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0553294385/qid=1072657800/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-8173205-7486465?v=glance&s=books">RIGHT HERE</a>!!!

feelgood 12-28-2003 05:25 PM

It's a fake? Aw damn, I was hoping for it to be real but dang, guess I'll have to wait for another 50 years before technology like that comes out...

Tickford 12-29-2003 02:34 AM

Damn it, I want one now....... Im so sick of house work...... damn it!!!

smooth 12-29-2003 04:03 AM

It's a promo for the movie about to debut. It's still cool to dream, however!

grumpyolddude 12-29-2003 11:16 AM

I, Robot; Caves Of Steel; Bicentennial Man; Robots of Dawn; Robots and Empire; all of the Norby stories: Isaac Asimov was one of the greatest writers of all time. And his robot books were just a small fraction of his total work, both fiction and non-fiction.

If 20th Century Fos is presuming to make a film.... it had better be GREAT!

actionoreos 12-29-2003 11:20 AM

I saw a "promo" for this mixed in with the previews for ROTK when I went to see it last week. At first I thought it was another one of those annoying movie commercials but then I chalked it up to a movie preview like the Resident Evil 2 one.

Mr.Deflok 12-29-2003 12:40 PM

It's based on the short story by Phillip K Dick, his stroies have been made into classic films suchas Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) and Minority Report. I have high hopes for this film, especially since Goyer as at it's helms however I just hope Will Smith acts in this film, we all know just how good he can be when he puts the effort in and stops being Mr. MTV.

The episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air where his father comes back after so many years demonstrates just how brilliant his acting can be.

Umm.... click on some of the links posted above. Whatever you're smoking, I suggest you stop it. Goyer? Philip K. Dick? umm... yeah.

I didn't post that, swear to God...
(can any TFP mods look into that?)

Nah. That would be to easy. This has to make the most money possible so Asimov's work will be a rehash of action films with T&A galore.

Moskie 12-30-2003 06:15 AM

Man, I'm really looking forward this. I've just recently got into Asimov's work, and I'm loving all of it. Making my way through I, Robot as we speak.

Anyone know which particular book (story?) this movie is based on?

Let's not forget the Foundation series. Well, the first trilogy of it, at least.

hklong741 12-30-2003 08:40 AM

I'm hoping it's not based on any of the books, since there areso much derivative material from Asimov (and the whole Robots, Empire and Foundation works) that maybe it'll be a better way to get new people interested, and then they can decide how Asimov-flavored they want to be by reading his and other authors works.

I think most of his stuff would be difficult for the movies, tho, because there's a lot of grand scale implications and internal thinkings of the characters at work. But I'll give it a try. Can't be much worse than Bad Boys 2.
Seeing the different mindset a society is in, once there are humaniod servants everywhere could be challenging for an actor. It could be a great way of showing how close to slavery we are really comfortable with, when it's all around us.

Re-reading the entire Foundation series is top of the retirement to-do list. A good month long session of Galactic Civ after that........

feelgood 12-30-2003 10:13 AM

I, Robot is the name of the movie? Didn't they made one already back in the 40 or 50s? I thought it wasn't allowed for 2 movies to have same name...

QuasiMojo 12-31-2003 10:37 AM

I Robot...

The future is now
wow.
what would you do with your very own personal robot?

you may soon be able to find out

http://www.irobotnow.com/index.php

this site doesn't really show the robot in action but it gives you a feel for it. (kinda like the footage of the Dodge Tomahawk)

legolas 12-31-2003 11:09 AM

Make it do my homework?
Probably set it as a guard in my dorm room actually.

kel 12-31-2003 11:29 AM

Can it pick up bitches and hos for me?
I'd buy it if it could do that.

Phaenx 12-31-2003 11:37 AM

Tell it to get a couple jobs, and let it rake in the cash while I'm at college.

SecretMethod70 12-31-2003 12:07 PM

I'd be willing to put a large sum of money down that that is actually a gimmick site to promote the upcoming "I, Robot" movie.

I only wish Wil Wheaton would have gotten the part in it :(

This was discussed in another thread, but no search function and I can't find it, but yes, it is a marketing ploy for the movie.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0343818/

BentNotTwisted 12-31-2003 12:51 PM

Of course, it's a marketing ploy. But, what would you do if you had one? I'd have it digging me a swimming pool in the back yard. Then again, the thing would probably cost a helluva lot more than just paying for the pool iteslf.

Amethyst 12-31-2003 01:06 PM

My personal robot would clean my house and take care of my kids for me. And get groceries the store is way to stressful for me.

Baldrick 12-31-2003 04:52 PM

Oh man, I'd set it to one function and weld the dial there. Clean my house - including laundry and dishes! :)

hklong741 01-02-2004 08:29 AM

Yeah, it's gonna be a movie, but outside of that normal stuff of forced labor to be used at my whim............

I would ask it to tell me how much I have become enslaved to my laziness and cowardice, as compared to his lack of rebellion.

Then the argument begins, the tea is set and I finally have something more mindless than TV to watch.

15 minutes after that I would have it find a way to get Alicia Rhodes to be faithful to me while I fillm her in bukkake videos.

The animal inside of me could be less of a horror than the animal I strive to become.

Harshaw 01-02-2004 09:09 AM

I'd set out to trick it into breaking the laws of robotics.

sexymama 01-02-2004 10:05 AM

I'd program it to do the housework and cooking all the healthy stuff I should be eating rather than the convient crap I tend to eat when I get too busy.

John Falcon 01-02-2004 01:00 PM

Here's a link to the commercial / movie trailer;

gilada 01-13-2004 03:31 PM

Teaser site, I worry about this movie. I hear it's basically the title of the book, nothing else. Maybe the names of the characters as well. We'll see.

Mantus 01-13-2004 03:41 PM

NO NO NO! Why do they tease me so! My dreams of the ultimate sex toy are shattered!

Name me one guy on this forum that doesn't think so...

Drider_it 01-14-2004 03:33 PM

Ahh asimov would be proud.. sigh i hope.. they better not mess this movie up like AI *cough* sucked *cough*

but other than thats from what i saw of it lol it looked cool

i want to finally see how they interpurpet the 3 laws. I used to agrue over them with my dad for hours back in the day.

PulpMind 01-14-2004 10:54 PM

can't wait for quittime.com/trailers to get a preview of this *grin

Sparhawk 01-15-2004 07:39 AM

I wish someone would do for this series what Jackson did for Lord of the Rings. *sigh* how fantastic would that be...

BentNotTwisted 01-15-2004 03:30 PM

One more thing. I fervently hope that when the real thing is created, the manufacturers remember to include the 3 Laws in every one of those suckers.

Nazggul 01-15-2004 04:03 PM

Anyone know if the movie is based on Asimov? Or am I way off base here?

RObots will do every job that people do not want to do. This will lead to a social revolution because the poverty level folks will no longer have jobs. They will rise up and kill all the classist Robot owning elitists.

Ya, that's the way it'll happen.
