Why doesn't anyone like Kevin Costner?

Whenever someone mentions Waterworld or The Postman everyone acts as if they're the worst movies ever.

I think everyone unjustly underrates these movies. Yah, they aren't Shakespeare(heh) but they are much better than everyone gives them credit for.

What do everyone here thing? I don't dare ask this on any other forum. I can see the flames from a mile away.

Averett 12-12-2003 05:14 AM

I haven't seen either of those movies, but generally I like Kevin Costner movies.

wondash 12-12-2003 06:03 AM

No Way Out... Great movie!

Conclamo Ludus 12-12-2003 06:41 AM

3000 Miles to Graceland

Great movi- oh nevermind.

I generally like Costner. I thought Waterworld sucked but I hardly think its one of the worst of all time. Didn't see the Postman. I think he's a better actor when he doesn't produce or direct. He was great in The Untouchables and JFK. He was good in Tin Cup and Field of Dreams.

But seriously, Waterworld and The Postman are mentioned. Both were productions that cost a couple hundred million dollars to make, and each only made what an average movie would make, maybe a little more, so they were essentially huge wastes of time and money.

Costner is a great actor in the right role; see Crash Davis in Bull Durham. However, from what I've heard he has been in some roles that don't quite fit him.

Cynthetiq 12-12-2003 07:50 AM

i liked him in Untouchables, No Way Out.... after Robin Hood... I kinda got tired of him....and those other ones.. Postman/Waterworld... i never saw postman, but waterworld was a turn IMO

Sparhawk 12-12-2003 08:00 AM

I liked wyatt earp, robin hood, tin cup, and thirteen days. I can't think of anything else recently that I enjoyed.

Reese 12-12-2003 08:01 AM

He's been a baseball player in more movies than anyone else I believe :)

Yeah, Waterworld and postman were really high budget but both of them made money.

As I said, They weren't the greastest movies but I hear people make fun of them all the time. I've seen far worse movies get far better treatment.

Is it just a Side effect of High expectations?

Evil Milkman 12-12-2003 08:04 AM

I loved Kevin Costner in Dances With Wolves. It wasn't necessarily a spectatular film, but I really enjoyed it. In his recent films, though, I don't really like his roles.

maximusveritas 12-12-2003 08:07 AM

Even though it wasn't all that bad, Waterworld was considered a critical and commercial disaster because of its high price tag. Ever since that movie, Costner's career has gone straight downhill. I don't know if its because he's lost his mind or just that no one will hire him for a good project. Even so, Costner made many great films in the late 80s/early 90s and gets my respect for that.

Averett 12-12-2003 09:40 AM

His most recent movie "Open Range" was supposed to be very good. I didn't see it though :(

alkaloid 12-12-2003 10:35 AM

Hey I actually liked Postman! I don't know why I went to see it, and I did find it cheezy and manipulative, but I still enjoyed it.

feelgood 12-12-2003 10:45 AM

Robin Hood, Waterworld, Dance with Wolves, Postman was fukin awesome! I don't see anything wrong with Costner...perhaps those people that don't like him got too hasty...

BuddyHawks 12-12-2003 12:49 PM

Open Range was great!

Mr.Deflok 12-12-2003 01:23 PM

ROBIN HOOD was some tight as shit (no pun intended).

Not a fan of his other movies but I really wanna see THIRTEEN DAYS sometime soon.

Baldrick 12-12-2003 03:00 PM

It's odd really. I can't stand Kevin Costner, but I generally enjoy the movies he's in.

My huge problem with Costner - and it's the same with Tommy Lee Jones for me - is that he has ONE character he can play. Every movie he's in, it's the same facial expressions, the same monotone line delivery, and the same effort being put in. He's a terrible actor who keeps getting high profile work, and that's my big problem with him.

Fremen 12-12-2003 04:01 PM

The only movie of his I wasn't into was Dragonfly.
I'm not saying he's not a flawed actor, but he's one of my favorites of all time.
I loved his role in Silverado. Jake was just a fun character.
Costner looked like he was having a great time in it.
He needs more roles where he can let loose and have some fun with.

phukraut 12-12-2003 06:49 PM

I loved 13 days, but i'm not sure if it was because of his role or not. however, i can say for sure that his speech at the end of JFK was absolutely riveting and gave me goosebumps.

Wyodiver33 12-12-2003 09:54 PM

Well, whatever, but I thought that "Dances With Wolves" was a Great movie. Critics slam Kevin Costner all the time, but please give the guy some credit for making the movies that he wants to make. That's called being an artist. We consumers might not like every offering from the director. That's fine by me. Do you guys really want cookie=cutter movies? Do you want directors to never take chances?

BigGov 12-12-2003 10:10 PM

Because the Postman and Waterworld are crap? If I want to sit down for three hours and watch a good movie, I'll watch the Godfather, Scarface, hell the South Park movie twice.

Many people just think the movies aren't that good.

SecretMethod70 12-13-2003 01:11 AM

Costner has made some great movies. I thought Dances With Wolves was fantastic. And, while Waterworld wasn't a great movie, it was entertaining.

Hate the movies, not the people in them. Costner deserves more respect.

paddyjoe 12-13-2003 04:09 AM

In some movies he seems very animated and fun, like "Silverado", and then in other movies, like "The Bodyguard", they could just as easily cast a 2x4 out of somebody's garage. He's just way too inconsistant of an actor.

sadatx 12-13-2003 10:19 AM

Costner gets alot of flak (not entirely undeserved) because people tend to think that his star power clouds his decisions leading him to make expensive flops like The Postman (sorry, but I thought it was pretty bad).

The people who just don't like him anymore, probably loved him in Bull Durham and think that's the kinda of role he should always play.

I don't think he has the greatest range as an actor. But I also think it's unfair to pigeon-hole him.

It was. It was slow paced for most of the movie, but it was well done, I thought, and the climatic battle at the end absolutely blew me away.

sartan 12-26-2003 06:05 AM

I generally like most of the movies I've seen with him in it.

KWSN 12-26-2003 07:22 AM

I tried very hard to watch Waterworld but I simply never could. It was just a bore if you ask me.

I did like him in Open Range, though.

clifclav 12-26-2003 08:12 AM

I imagine the expectation he placed on himself and others placed on him after Dances were a bit high. He has made some good movies since then and some that were rather poor IMO. I don't think his acting skills are up there with Spacey, Kingsley, DeNiro but he's not Jim Belushi either.

frankgrimes 12-26-2003 09:53 PM

I don't hate him, I liked Silverado, Bull Durham, The Untouchables, but in my opinion, Waterworld was TERRIBLE! Robin Hood was almost as bad. Lately his movies just don't seem to be worth seeing... Good luck to him, I hope he gets another hit, but it doesn't look great for him, hes not aging as gracefully as some actors...

mrbuck12000 12-26-2003 10:32 PM

I think I hate him for his Robin Hood. I mean come on -his Robin Hood didn't even have an English accent.

teshadoh 12-27-2003 05:19 PM

I'm sometimes confused with Kevin Costner - he's been in some excellent films, in fact I would say they're modern day classics. But I still hate him. I'll have to bring in Richard Gere to trash as well - because I link them together - they are dishonest one dimensional actors. They always play the same thing, they have never shown any true depth or complications.

I would add Tom Cruise & Kenau Reeves - but I think they are more asses than bad actors. Gere & Costner are simply nice chumps that have made a career of smiling for the camera.

moonstrucksoul 12-27-2003 07:15 PM

i actually thought that Dennis Hopper was worse in Waterworld, than Costner. Bull Durham rocks!

Outlander36 12-27-2003 08:03 PM

Dances with Wolves... although long, a very good movie.

Smoky 12-30-2003 12:01 PM

I think his problem now is he's made a string of long, bloated movies that have wiped out the 'cred' he got for Dances with Wolves. Even Dances (Directors Cut) is insanely long for the subject matter. I agree that he's an artist doing films about what he's interested in, but the problem comes in where nobody else is interested to that degree to want to spend 3 hours on it.

Anyway, loved Bull Durham.

"They're kids, scare 'em"

monkeydriven 12-30-2003 02:02 PM

maybe because he's pretentious

Fire 12-31-2003 12:44 AM

I tend to agree with the long movies lacking content idea- loved the ideas behind both water world and Postman, but the execution was shit, and both would have been helped by being shorter- and having coherent plots, good acting, etc...
